My MIL knew because DH showed her the ring beforehand. My mom knew because DH called her and asked for her blessing.
Both families were very happy.
I'm sorry some girls' experiences were less than happy.

DH's parents called DH up about a half hour before he proposed. When he said he was getting ready to propose, they said 'Well, I hope you know this means we wont give you money for school now'
He actually had a feeling that would happen so he was not supprised.

My ILs were so excited. Actually everyone was a little relieved, I think, because we'd been together for five years and they thought we'd never get around to it. In fact, we were going to MIL's house for Thanksgiving, and he was not sure if he was asking me the day after or the day before, but she was so excited, she begged him to do it the night before! (He did it the night before - he couldn't wait either!) My mom was cute too - she had champagne all ready when we came over! It's a really good memory.
I am sorry some of you had lousy reactions from your ILs. People can be so selfish.

My MIL acted surprised beyond belief - speechless even though i am pretty certain she knew DH had bought the ring - he had it for a few months before he proposed. FIL didnt say anything.

My in-laws were over the moon!!! DH brought both of them when he picked out my ring and they were SOOO excited. MIL helped plan our trip to WDW for him to propose! When they picked us up from the airport they had a huge banner, balloons... They were just estatic.
My parents on the other hand...
Do we have the same in laws and parents?

Well my MIL was not so happy because it happened while we were on a vacation, so she didnt see us for a while...and the first reaction was not great. My FIL laughed when we told him.

DH's aunt said: 'But you're so YOUNG!' Um... DH was 32, I was 27. Huh? And p.s., she was 18 and pregnant when she got married!
DH's brother said to him: 'This is too fast... you're moving too fast. Are you sure about this?' We had dated almost 2 years. But then again, he lived with his wife for 7 years before they got married at 35! Fine for him, but that's not what we wanted!
My parents were thrilled -- they knew about it, DH had asked for their blessing a month before. After he proposed, we went back to their house and they had a card, champagne, chocolate-dipped strawberries, and their camera all ready It was sweet.
DH's parents acted happy. Until they realized that WE were going to plan our wedding, not them. Then they went NUTS!

My in-laws knew before I did. DH and I were looking at rings and he slipped away to use the 'bathroom' but he was actually on the phone with them asking if he should buy it or not. His sisters and parents were home and they all got on separate extensions and chanted 'do it, do it'. So he did, behind my back and surprised me later in the night.

My FILs were so happy for us, especially, since FH is the baby - the last to be engaged and he decided to do it down in Florida, where they live while we were down visiting!!!!!
they were so cute- and had champagne and stuff waiting for us when we came back from 'dinner'
they knew ahead of time, and even though i had no idea at all he was going to propose, i should have known somehting was up when his dad hugged us goodbye when we left for dinner
at the time i thought nothing of it, but looking back it should have been a clue! lol

'So this means we are not going to Italy?'
They were excited about the wedding, but bummed italy got pushed again. Now it was just pushed another year cause my SIL is getting married next March

My MIL was like FINALLY can you believe it! We were dating 4 1/2 years when he proposed. She was VERY happy for the both of us!

My ILs had no idea that Brad had even bought the ring. When we got to his house, brad walked down the stairs and said, 'so, how would you guys like another daughter?' They looked briefly stunned, then excited. I remember his dad giving me a huge hug and saying that he couldn't have chosen a better daughter-in-law. I don't remember what my MIL said at all!

DH made the mistake of telling his mom beforehand. She was so excited and she's can't keep a secret if her life depended on it that I overheard her telling DH over the phone (I heard her voice because it is so LOUD) how excited she was the night before he proposed so I knew something was up!

About.a month before we got engaged my DH was at his mom's house visiting ( we lived together) and she handed him a diamond ring (it was his great aunts) ans said...I want you to ask Jenn to marry you! She knew this was something we had been talking about and THOUGHT that Dh didn't have the money to buy me a ring (why i have no idea LOL).
The thing is he ordered mine already and was going to be ready that next month AND was PAID FOR....
But just the thought that my MIL thought that highly of me to make such a gesture touched my heart!
So everytime she gets on my nerves a little...i think of that!
