What is your 'what not to wear, or what not to do' advice

Original post by Espo22

I was watching something so curious what others have to say.

What are trends you hate, or what tips do you have regarding clothes, hair or make up.

My biggest thing is that alot of people buy things simply because it looks good or is trendy at the moment and don't pay as much attention to the fact that maybe it's not the right look for them. When I go shopping the #1 thing i look for is how it fits me, don't care how gorgeous something is and don't care how much I want it or how trendy it is, if it doesnt flatter me then I won't buy it. So when going through the store I basically go through all the clothes and look for specific fits. I'll go through it and say nope wrong neckline won't fit me right, bad fit of jeans on me so nope, and so on. It drives DH nuts bc he will point out something he likes and although I'll love it, i say nope doesn't fit my body type. There are some things I would LOVE to wear but just don't. Some will just buy a trend just to buy it. I am very big on what bras make you look best, what style pants is best for your body type, if youre short what type of dresses and pants to wear and that sort of stuff. Thats why i love those 2 english ladies who do the 'what not to wear' England version. They are always on Oprah and this is what they focus on and tips they give.

One tip alot of stylists and make up artists give that I do agree with is DONT match your eye make up to your clothes. One time Jay manuel came to where I was working and the first thing he did was tell the girl i was working with 'oh no sweetie you never match your eye make up and clothes this way' she had a pink dress on and had on alot of pink eye shadow. I felt bad bc he said to her face it was tacky. But for example if you're wearing a blue dress, not into wearing blue eye make up to match it or green dress and all green make up. They say to find a color that compliments it but not to match it exactly and be dress all in one color.

Denise the scarf thing is ridiculous beyond . Uggs in the summer ( I think all uggs are blah anyway)

* Just saw the uggs and sweatpants comment . wait till you move to Long Island if you think you see it alot now , just wait

Bouncing off of this comment, I have UGGS and I love them, but why do girls wear their freakin pajama pants out to the mall, movies, etc....That is NOT COOL.

I hope I don't offend anyone but I just cannot stand clear bra straps! Get a strapless!!

People actually wear that? Eeeks!

What's wrong with clear straps? Some people have larger breasts than others and need more support. It's better to have clear straps than any other strap that is showing.

I never heard of clear straps but I don't think clear straps look bad if you have a strap over it , I just can't see a strapless shirt/dress with the clear straps hanging out - just seems odd. But then again I have never seen them before IoI

Edited: I realize my eeks comment was off but i just imagined these thick clear shiny straps with a strapless dress which I have seen and sorry it doesn't look that great - get a corset that is what my big boobie friends do IoI But the thin staps after seeing Denise's pic look like nothing is there.

My biggest fashion pet peeve is uggs or any winter boot being worn in the summer- especially with a mini skirt! I just hate it and think it looks trashy! LOL.

My favorite fashion icon I think is Faith Hill. She is just so classy! I also love Reese Witherspoons style. I def like the classic look. Trendy is fun sometimes for certain events, but over all I just like classic pieces.

i was afraid to mention the Uggs bc i know ALOT of girls wear it and didn't want to offend people, but yeah i dont like them either. ANd its funny but last week when dh and i went shopping we brought this up, and we bring it up almost everytime we go shopping. But why do 90% of girls who go shopping wear sweatpants with uggs. Its like the national shopping outfit. I see it all the time and its like ok you are wearing the same outfit as almost every girl here.

sorry if I offended anyone! I think uggs are a great brand of winter boots!!! But I think its insane to wear them when it is not winter! They are a wool lined boot! Arn't you sweating in 90 degree heat wearing them? I think thats just nasty! JMHO! And its my biggest pet peeve ever next to xmas stuff being out before thanksgiving and especially Halloween! If its warm enough to wear a mini skirt, then its not the right time to wear a pair of winter boots!!!

And ya a lot of people do shop in that outfit! Haha!!

actually what i heard about uggs is that they are good for cold and warm weather. The sheepskin or whatever is inside actually keeps your feet cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The person who made ugg boots started it as surf wear or something like that. I remember seeing this whole thing about it on tv. But yeah i wouldnt be able to.

Exactly Espo...Male Surfers started this trend and the women took over. I personally don't wear them until my tootsies start getting cold.

Oh no...you don't wear a clear strap bra with a strapless dress....That is Glamour Don't for sure. I only wear clear straps with my halter tops and sometimes any other shirt that would reveal my real bra straps. If it's a strapless dress, I am probably not wearing any bra at all, because I am not that big and can get away with it. I put some tape on the nips, and I'm good to go...LOL

OMG i hate clear straps with strapless stuff. I wore clear straps for my wedding so in case it peeked out a bit it wouldnt be so bad, that is fine - or under a tank top but under something strapless,ew

at a friends wedding this girl had this SUPER low back dress and she had a TOTALLY clear bra - like the straps AND the back part were clear and you could see it plus like a foot underneath - for a wedding!! not a club or anything, so gross.

well the trick is that they dont show much lol. I dont wear strapless stuff period. I was a bm and well at first it had spaghetti straps but they broke, we fixed it and then broke again. I HAD to wear a strapless bra, well i just took the straps off of my bra and it was horrible. I kept having to lift them up and i was just popping out SO much, i was uncomfortable.

Mostly its girls with big breast that use this and use it for things such as spaghetti straps bc honestly before clear strap bras i never wore a spaghetti strap dress or even a shirt with thin straps. Its hard enough as it is for me to find dresses and before it really s*cked bc not only is it hard but on top of that i was only able to buy dresses that had very thick straps or had halter tops and not even halter tops, or had a little bit of a sleeve. I used to only dream of spaghetti straps

Yeah it is not a good look on anyone . Neither is letting your thong stick out over your pants , like hiking them up so everyone can see . classy .

Something I do like is the vintage modern mix.

I have this black dress that has a portrait/sweetheart neckline and its tiny tiers and stretchy black to the knee. its snug but its also classy a la Sophia Loren. I want to wear it with red peep-toe heels, curled hair and a hair piece like J Lo did in that silver dress-I think it will still be modern but have that 'vibe' of vintage I love.

I think people need to know what works for them. Like denise said I LOVE some of these trends but I know I'd look silly. So I stick to more 'conservative' and structured wear and I look a million times better like a sexy top and well fitted trousers over a slinky dress that shows everything to the worst advantage.

I used to try to follow trends but I always felt less attractive because most of them didnt work for me. Knowing my body and dressing it for me despite the trends always helps me look my best i think.

This is the strap i meant. When you wear it with a strapless dress or tube top. I have large C's and am resigned to never wearing tube tops bc i will have boobs falling out from the bottom. I had a wedding guest wear a beautiful strapless dress with clear straps on her bra It killed the dress completely.

I agree especially on tanned skin-just pops too much. If its under a spaghetti strap its almost ok but strapless eh-skip the style and go with one that works for your chest size if thats the issue.

in this pic i am wearing a clear strap and i bet most of you cant tell that i am wearing a clear strap bra. You just have to know how to wear it. If it wasnt for a clearstrap bra then I would've NEVER been able to wear this dress or any dress with this type of strap

see I cant see them at all. Thats fine. But Im not a fan when someone is wearing a strapless dress or a tube top and clear straps. Thats when Im not a fan.
