So DH and I are entering a new and interesting phase of marriage called house hunting. Wow, even in this market, houses are expensive .
Aside from trying to find something in our budget, we are also trying to find something that both of us like. My dream house is a cottagey, Cape Cod style with a huge yard. DH likes contemporary houses, in neutral colors with lots of black. Comfortable, though. Needless to say, we've both got some compromising to do!
So, my question is, if money were no object, what would be your dream home? How about your DH?

Re: What would be your dream house?
Porch, 3 bedrooms, master suite w/fireplace, LR with fireplace, big DR, kitchen with an island, full finished basement w/bar area, workout area, laundry room.
And the single most important aspect of this dream home - room for slip n slide.

I would love my house to be on the beach with a wrap around porch. it doesn't have to be huge but I want 5 bedrooms. I want the Master to have it's own big bathroom with jaccuzi tub, and I want the room to have a little sitting area. I would love it to have an inlaw suite (guest suite) so my parents can visit and be comfortable in their own place. Lots of windows! (with someone else to clean them)

Re: What would be your dream house?
My dream house would be a huge sprawling ranch in the Hamptons. I love old fashioned shutters, porches, architectural roofs, French window treatments, white mantels, decorative moldings and those barn style garage doors. Inside I would decorate with lots of antiques and country decor. I would also incorporate some more contemporary touches such as granite countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms. I would also have lots of animals and a big garden. Oh, and lots of tall trees too! I love neighborhoods that are very wooded.
My DH used to be into leather sofas, lots of marble and granite all over the place (I guess you can say more sleek and contemporary). Now he is learning to love my style. One thing we both have in common is we both love a sprawling ranch.
We are moving soon so I can't wait to start decorating!

Definitely a ranch, not huge (just enough for our family, gives me the creeps to be all alone in a huge house)
On the water
Wrap around or nice front porch
Nice sized yard
Somewhere probably down south- for warmer weather
Not too modern/harsh lines, but more country or quaint looking
PS- I love the look of HGTV's 'green home,' altho inside is probably bit more modern than Id like
Ooh, and I loved the house from the movie 'Message in a Bottle' for those who have seen it, right on beach, loved the inside.
I agree. I grew up in a big house and I would get scared when I was alone. I would never want a huge house!

Re: What would be your dream house?
I really do love the home we just bought...it IS my dream house...but since we're dreaming here i would like to add that i love two different style homes...the house we have now is the charming, cozy, and beautiful home ive always dreamed of.
My 2nd dream home is a mediterranean style house with a huge infinity pool with columns and marble floors, marble bathrooms, and very european chic. Something like this

Re: What would be your dream house?
My dream home would either be a Victorian, Colonial or Cape Cod home with a big porch with a swing for two and a rocking chair. I want a few bedrooms, a home office office, a laundry room (I HATE going to the next building over to do laundry), a game/family room and a huge eat in kitchen with granite counter tops & stainless steel appliances. I would also like a big backyard and a pool.
we both like comfy country feeling homes. I def want something two story. 4-5 bedrooms and at least 2.5 bathrooms. I want a kitchen with an island and lots of cupboard space. A porch would be great. And a large entertaining area in the backyard would be ideal. And I'd love to have a free form pool with a fountain. Lots of windows and light. Hardwood floors. Walk in closet and lots of closet space in general would be great. And the walls would be lots of greens, yellows, and browns. Think pottery barn meets restoration harware. I found a house for sale in nashville that would be perfect. LOL. Even though I stalk realtor.com, I havn't found anything like this that we will ever be able to afford. So we will have to move. Or never have a house we like. :(
ETA pic of house in nashville. LOL. And i have a pic of the living room- I like how it is painted.
where did you find this pic at, it looks like a house that is right around the corner from the apartment we use to live in.
Love these. We have houses like this all over Montclair and Caldwell though of course we cannot affford them. Most of them need sooo much work and major upkeep.
I'd want the works ina dream house; sylights, wrap around porch, room to convert into my personal office with lots of light, maybe a skylight. HUGE master bathroom with a clawfoot tub and a second bathroom with th two sinks and shower for DH. HUGE renovated kitchen with an island and plenty of eat-in seating because we like to eat and entertain in the kitchen, finished basement, great backyard...
LOL but in reality I'd be happy with a nice, affordable house-unheard of in our part of NJ..

Re: What would be your dream house?
This is my other dream house. its actually in the town I grew up in- but is like 1 million dollars!! So itll never happen unless we like win the lotto. LOL. I just love the look of it and the kitchen and openess of the living area, and the bathroom looks so peaceful- I def want a bathroom I can just take a bath and relax in!
Oh, and we'd also love to have a beach house down South and a home in Alaska where DH is from, so we could go spend time there in the summers when the weather is perfect. Something like this for the AK home-
and all of our homes would be completely handicap accessible!
