A classmate of mine got engaged this weekend and was showing off her to everyone and bragging about how it was 5 carats!
It was a pretty big diamond but not HUGE. Has anyone seen a diamond that big? Would it look ridiculous on a ring? 1 carats... 2... maybe even 3, but I've never seen a 5 carat solitaire! (until today?)

it totally depends on the cut and setting. I know someone with a 4.something carat ring and it's perfect for her. yes it's HUGE but she's marrying a multimillionare so it was sort of expected. i don't think it's obnoxious or anything...
however, if she went around bragging about it, i'd smack the crap out of her b/c THAT is obnoxious.

but size is not everything.. cut, clarity, color all matters you rather get a smaller colorless flawless diamond.. 5 carats should be something like this on a finger

My aunt has a 3 carat diamond ring and its about the size of my thumb's fingernail... So I would imagine a 5 carat would be HUUUGE...
I wouldn't mind having it....

I Agree 100%. When we were looking for rings, I tried on a 1.25 carat ring that was $200,00! (I had NO IDEA when I asked to see it!)
My DH wound up buying me something much bigger & it cost MUCH less. Just because its 5 carats doesn't mean its nice or that it even sparkles. You can get a 5 carat ring for $50k.

My mom inherited her mom's 5 ct pear shaped diamond. It is definately noticeable, so no need to show it off. My mom only wears it on special occasions.
My mom also just inherited my other grandma's 3 ct round diamond. I think the 3 ct looks larger than the 5 ct because of the shape and the setting, so you never know.

5 carats... that's a little TOO much... too gaugty... 1 -3 is fine... if she has a 5 carat.. it might be yellow because it's not clear and it might not have really good clarity... plus i think it's a waste of money... getting married should be able love not how big of a ring you got.. that you can put a down payment for a house

i would LOVE to see a 5 carat pear diamond! i have a pear solitaire, but its not 5 carats does she have any pics? i bet it is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love huge pear diamonds!!

it sounds like a lot of ppl are knocking it......i dont know why - I bet its amazing!! i certainly wouldnt mind if i got a 5 carat ring! hey, if you can afford that lifestyle than i say go for it - and just because its a big stone doesn't mean its lacking clarity, or cut or color.....i feel like everyone always jumps to that conclusion when a ring is above 2 carats - Ohhh it must be poor quality, or bad color, or this or that......but you don't know whats in other peoples wallets and what the certifcate says.....

I couldn't agree with you more. My cousin received a 5carat Harry Winston canary yellow diamond from her multi-millionaire husband when they got engaged and it is GORGEOUS!!

She was prob just super excited!! Think back to how excited you were when u received your engagement ring!! I know I wanted to show strangers passing in the street I was SOOOO excited!!

i actually saw someone with a 4carat round solitare....since i knew it was real of course i was like OMG!!!!! but honestly, if i saw her on the street, i would've thought it was costume jewelry from claires or something. It looked to big to be real! lol.seriously!

It's fine to show it off, its another to blatantly brag about the fact that its 5 carats. That sets off red flags in my opinion. I would think it was fake. A person who really has a 5 carat ring doesn't need to go telling everyone how big it is...we can already see that with our own eyes!

i believe there is a girl on the boards who has a ring that is more than 4 carats but less than five...it's princess cut, i think. there was a big discussion on here about it once. it looked really nice to me!
