A classmate of mine got engaged this weekend and was showing off her to everyone and bragging about how it was 5 carats!
It was a pretty big diamond but not HUGE. Has anyone seen a diamond that big? Would it look ridiculous on a ring? 1 carats... 2... maybe even 3, but I've never seen a 5 carat solitaire! (until today?)

Re: 5 carat diamond?
I'll say it for the purpose of this conversation but not to be like the girl this is about:
I have a relatively big ring. I never really told people how big it is unless they specifically ask.
Even when I got engaged & people said 'how's the ring?' I said 'gorgeous'. I said 'I Love it'. I said 'its a round solitaire.' But I never said 'its ___ carats', except for to my mom & my BF.
HOWEVER ------ I was SO EXCITED when I got engaged that I could totally understand being like 'HOLY SH!T He proposed with a 5 carat ring!' (mine is not 5 carats but you get what I'm saying.)
To each his own....

Re: 5 carat diamond?
If someone can afford it...why not? I am not saying I would walk around bragging about how many carats it is but if I were proposed to with a 5 carat ring...I wouldn't be complaing!

thing is..im sure a lot of people can't afford it!! they probably finance it!! I mean look how many people drive around cars they can't afford..someone i know has a 3.5 ct diamond and they're car was repossesed and they are having trouble paying off their mortgage..so its got to be hard..

Wowsers! I've 'only' seen a 4 carat ring and it looked like an ice skating rink on her finger. The woman was marrying some guy who owned his own hedge fund company, so he was doing pretty well for himself.

Re: 5 carat diamond?
I worked with a MD that had gotten married with no$$ & no engagement ring and when they reached their 10 yr anniversary he bought her a very nice $80K 5 carat sparkler. she was not snobbish about it. She event gave it to me to try on. I almost fainted. That was the first and last time I will probably have a real diamond that size on my finger. It can be real, real big and really that nice. I take it for what it is and damn how nice it would be to have. I love my ring but I did have my eye on a nice 3ct.

Re: 5 carat diamond?
A friend of mine has a 6 carat solitaire, with a wedding band that is 1 carat seperate diamonds all around. I thought it was going to look insane, but it actually did not look as big as I thought. It was gorgeous, but I would be nervous to wear it. My ring is definitely not anywhere near 6 carats, but I'm still nervous to wear it in some areas, I make sure I turn the stone around.

I say good for her for having such a big beautiful ring, thats the ring her fiance bought and could afford.....My ring isn't too too big but I love it b/c its not the size of the ring but the thought and love that it symbolizes. I'm so happy my Soon to be Mr. loves me enough to have gone out to buy me a ring that promises the rest of his life to me. It's not the size but the man you are marrying that should be important.

Re: 5 carat diamond?
Yes, it is doubtful, unless they are billionaires, that the diamond is of high quality. It depends what your priorities are. If you want big, you may sacrifice quality. Some people don't care about that. If you want a good quality diamond, you must pay for it. Although, there are synthetic diamonds nowadays that are very reasonably priced and they are real diamonds - they're just made in a lab, not the ground. It just depends what you're into - size or sparkle!

If any of us had a 5 carat ring we wouldnt have to brag about it. It would speak for itself.
Touche'
My friend has a gorgeous 4-5 carat ring (I don't know exact) and I'm sure people were talking the same smack people are talking here...he financed it, it's probably yellow, it's probably horrible clarity, etc. but the reality of it is her dad is a jeweler and I'm sure that diamond is damn near perfect. But it's not anybody's business, it's a gorgeous ring and IMO, if you got it, flaunt it. No need to feel bad about it!

Re: 5 carat diamond?
That guy must be flilthy rich or just bought her a 5 carat cloudy ring. I'm not seeing he did but it can happen. A 1 carat diamond - D clarity (flawless) and only the diamond will run you almost 10k. So 5 carat about $50k plus the ring itself could cost another fortunate.
She's shoudn't go around talking like that but more power to her. If she's happy with it then good for her.

Re: 5 carat diamond?
my FH isnt filthy rich and he saved and was able to afford my ring and he paid for it in cash......hey it can happen - people save......some of us are paying 50K or more for our weddings aren't we?? and we only have 1 or 2 years to save - and its only for one night - at least a diamond lasts a lifetime!! so its definitely possible to save that much for a ring - my FH did it! that is why my ring is so special to me - its not the size but the fact that he secretly was saving and working his *** off for me....he could have just gotten me a ring with what he had in his savings account - but he wanted to do more than that - and he worked 2 jobs and tons of overtime....at one point he was working well over 60 hours a week - it shows what kind of person he is.....and it means the world to me! the fact that someone would acquire all that money - for all their hard work - and then give it all away for you......that is love!
