5 carat diamond?

Original post by bluegreen08

A classmate of mine got engaged this weekend and was showing off her to everyone and bragging about how it was 5 carats!

It was a pretty big diamond but not HUGE. Has anyone seen a diamond that big? Would it look ridiculous on a ring? 1 carats... 2... maybe even 3, but I've never seen a 5 carat solitaire! (until today?)

Here's one on sale at Sam's Club....low price of $109kHUGE RING

Re: 5 carat diamond?

it depends on the shape
for example, a princess or asscher has to be a bigger stone to look like a 1 carat round

just the way its cut but who does that?? i mean, who walks around saying how big their ring is?!?!

wow 5 is like JLO big!! Hahaha! And costly, BUT it doesn't cost as much as a flawless 2 carat if it isn't flawless I don't think. Got to also think quality over quantity with damonds (well thats what FH's aunt the jewler says- I don't know anything about this stuff).

I've been searching for a 5-carat ring. This is one I found- I'm surprised the price isn't higher5.05 Carat Cushion Cut Diamond Ring

Like a bunch of us have said- there is nothing wrong with having a ring that big- but it's the bragging that bothers me

OMG - it must have been gigantor! Everyone has their own thing, some people like big jewelry, others want big weddings or houses, exotic animals, you name it. ...I dream of a $17,000 long arm quilitng machine that I will probably never own

The only 'rule' I had when my FH was asking about engagement rings was that he was not to spend more than $2,000 - I told him if he felt the need to spend more than that to put it against student loans or our mortgage (we kinda went out of order with the wedding - house thing )

I have to say, this is just my opinion, but I would be really upset with my FH if he worked 60 hour weeks to pay for a piece of jewelry - or even the long arm I dream of - to me there is no physical object than can make up for or replace time we spend together. There are times that we work lots of OT because our jobs get busy and sometimes you have to, but to do it for money or an object would be backwards priorites to me.

i understand your point - but i admire the fact that my FH is such a hardworker and that he wants to get me beautiful things - it means that this is how he will treat me and more importantly one day our children - i guess to some people those things arent important but FH and I both like nice things and I dont think that there is anything wrong with that - i am going to have this diamond for a lifetime and hopefully one day will pass it down to my daughter(s), son, whoever - for me its comforting to know that my FH isn't lazy or a bum and that he will go out of his way for me and one day our family. i work a full time job as well but my salary isn't even half of his - so even though my salary helps it can't afford a mortgage or buy a house - so I dont think that there is anything wrong with my FH working extra to get us the things that we want and the things that we need. Money makes the world go round - and I dont think there is anything wrong with him working a little bit harder so that we can afford material things that are important to us and that make us happy - like an engagement ring, our wedding, a new house in a nice neighborhood - i think i am very lucky to have a FH who thinks that i deserve the best things in life that he can afford. not only is my diamond a symbol of our love and commitment, and promise to eachother but my diamond is an investment - its something that i will have a lifetime, its something that will go up in value and will be in our family for years to come - which i think is pretty kick ***!

i dont understand why it matters i understand people have different views but what i dont understand is why some people feel the need that everybody should have the same views as them It might not be something you personally want but this isn't you, its somebody else and if its for them then thats all that really matters. To say oh that is just stupid or who in the world would want that is basically saying oh its not something i would do so if i dont do it then its just stupid. I am sure there are things we ALL do that others would look at and think 'i wouldn't want that or i wouldn't do that' just bc theres a difference of opinion doesnt mean the other person is wrong or stupid.

And for all we know the girl can have a 5 carat diamond with better quality than most other girls rings on here, to automatically say it HAS to be bad quality i dont understand and to automatically jump to negative views and find a quick way to put someone down stems from other things, and honestly who even cares, im sorry but sitting there saying the quality isn't good enough is the same as saying the carat size isn't good enough.

i was just defending my FH and I, and explaining why I dont think that there is anything wrong with him working 20 hours of overtime a week - he worked it to save for my e- ring, now he is working it to save for our wedding and house. he is lucky and grateful that his career allows him to work all these extra hours and he even works a second job on the weekend when we need extra cash and so that we can continue to put money in our savings account for our future.... i admire him for being such a hardworker, its one of the qualities that i love most about him - and we still find time to spend with eachother - we live together so we see eachother every evening and every night - if you know what i mean

and i totally agree with what you said about the ring thing and i certainly wouldnt mind if FH came home with a 5 carat sparkler!!!

everyone has a different opinion...we're never going to agree on this subject, because everytime someone brings this up...people get misunderstood/offended....I'm happy with the ring I got and fh was happy to give it to me. Its a manifestation of his dedication, commitment, and love to me, regardless of the cost. I rather have candy ring pop, if thats what he could afford, and be sure that he loves me and wants to be with me forever, than not have anything at all.

it wasnt meant towards you, i meant the negative comments towards a girl who has a 5 carat ring...everyone says oh the carat size shouldn't matter then why does it matter if its 5 carats ya know lol...im with you on this one

I dont agree with a girl bragging then thats wrong but JUST bc someone says how many carats it is doesnt necessarily mean shes bragging but instead stating a fact. Point is who cares about what someone else has be happy with what youve got bc thats all that matters.

Another thought:

The other thing about tremendous diamonds, is that when they're that big, I think some people assume they're fake (unless you're a celebrity, of course). Like a costume cocktail ring. I'd much rather people know that my beautiful one carat is real!

That's what I thought of my friends huge ring. It looks like a bauble.

i'd rather have gotten a 1 carat & a new car for that amount of $$$$!!!

Or a down payment for a house! I know someone who got their 3 karat ring for a discount b/c they knew the jewler, and it was still over 40K!
