A classmate of mine got engaged this weekend and was showing off her to everyone and bragging about how it was 5 carats!
It was a pretty big diamond but not HUGE. Has anyone seen a diamond that big? Would it look ridiculous on a ring? 1 carats... 2... maybe even 3, but I've never seen a 5 carat solitaire! (until today?)

Re: 5 carat diamond?
My sister in law & her fiance are BROKE but she got her a 2.8 carat ring. She's rather have that than a big wedding. To each his own....
One other thing...
when you see a ring that size, the FIRST thing you would ask is 'how many carats is that?' What is the girl supposed to do? Lie? Say I don't know? Act humble? No... when someone asks you a question, you answer it.

my bosses wife has a 5 carat, she is a very petite women and the ring looks fabulous on her, not over the top at all. But she had to wait for her 15th wedding anniversary to get it! We call it the Buick!

My cousin's cousin (lol) has my exact ring except her center stone is over 4 carats. So with the baguettes on the side it probably reaches about 5 carats. maybe even more cause the baguettes are massive! I saw her at my cousins baby shower and she was looking at mine and was like OMG its soooo nice, we match!! And she would hold mine up against hers..its like umm dont do that just to show off how ridiculously large your ring is next to mine! A S S
what a jerk!
I don't get how that is obnoxious. She said yours was 'so nice' and was showing it off... I don't see how that alone is showing off HER ring. You have the same setting - she was showing people. What about it made it that she was bragging? Sounds like she was trying to be nice and maybe you read too much into it? (Then again, I wasn't there... but just from what you posted, I don't see how it was rude... *confused*)

Yes, it is doubtful, unless they are billionaires, that the diamond is of high quality. It depends what your priorities are. If you want big, you may sacrifice quality. Some people don't care about that. If you want a good quality diamond, you must pay for it. Although, there are synthetic diamonds nowadays that are very reasonably priced and they are real diamonds - they're just made in a lab, not the ground. It just depends what you're into - size or sparkle!
I find it just as aggravating as the people who brag about diamond size that people seem to automatically assume that just b/c your diamond is 2 carats (or 5 or whatever) that it must be poor quality. That's not always (or even often) the case.
I'm amazed at how concerned with other people's rings we are. People can be rude and obnoxious - just ignore them and be happy with what you have.

Re: 5 carat diamond?
I USED to work in the city at a place where celebrities and extremely rich ppl came in there, and everyone used a black amex card, i think i was surprised when they didn't...so ive seen 7,8, 10 carats...my mom has one client who has a 25 carat ring, she rarely wears it though only to big events.
its obnoxious if they brag about it but what can you do thats life, theres people who are way better off than others in this world and for some 5 carats isn't a big deal at all. To each their own, i dont really care what others have, hey if i know a girl who gets a 5 carat ring ill be like hey good for you.

Re: 5 carat diamond?
we dont know the persons situation to judge...maybe he makes alot of money or maybe hes one of those ppl that spend whatever they have, there are ALOT of ppl who buy big extravaggant things and its not like they're loaded...I know ppl who buy a benz and make either less a year or just as much as the car is worth, but its funny bc i am sure we all know at least 1 person like this but we dont think twice about it but if its a diamond ring everyone just assumes its either a poor quality ring or you HAVE to be filthy stinking rich.
For all we know that ring might be a family heirloom and he didn't spend a dime on it...he could've also financed the ring or he might have connections and got the ring for alot less than what its worth, it does happen

who cares about the size or quality of a ring..in the scheme of things..what does it matter...the ring is supposed to be a symbol of someones love and devotion to you...i could care less about this honestly there are so many more important things..my fh could have gotten me a .01ct diamond, z color and I3 and would it have mattered..not at all ..I would love him regardless..its sad our society places such importance on something sooo stupid

If her FH got it for her and she loves it, good for her....
Sometimes I also think it's the way in which things are delivered that make a difference. Someone who tells you their ring is 5 carats in a snobby tone will totally turn you off....

my FH isnt filthy rich and he saved and was able to afford my ring and he paid for it in cash......hey it can happen - people save......some of us are paying 50K or more for our weddings aren't we?? and we only have 1 or 2 years to save - and its only for one night - at least a diamond lasts a lifetime!! so its definitely possible to save that much for a ring - my FH did it! that is why my ring is so special to me - its not the size but the fact that he secretly was saving and working his *** off for me....he could have just gotten me a ring with what he had in his savings account - but he wanted to do more than that - and he worked 2 jobs and tons of overtime....at one point he was working well over 60 hours a week - it shows what kind of person he is.....and it means the world to me! the fact that someone would acquire all that money - for all their hard work - and then give it all away for you......that is love!
You are so right! My DH did the same thing and it means the world to me!!

Wow! didn't mean to start such a big thing. I was just surprised that her ring was 5c because while it was BIG it wasn't nearly as huge as i expected. not that i regularly go around trying on 5c rings to compare
I was expecting 5c to be more like the size of a dime!
Her FH is still a student but it could be a family heirloom, who knows!

That's pretty lame that she was bragging... Not for nothing, an engagement is alot more than just a ring. Don't get me wrong, I'm madly in love with my ring and definately showed my family and friends with extreme enthusiasm.. but certainly didn't belt out what size it was Definately tacky!
But aside from that- GOOD FOR HER! DANNNNG I'd love to see it

Yeah, I think it's the bragging part that probably would annoy most people...not the fact that it's a big ring. You don't get engaged to get a big ring...you do it because you love the other person and want to spend the rest of your life with them.

OMG - it must have been gigantor! Everyone has their own thing, some people like big jewelry, others want big weddings or houses, exotic animals, you name it. ...I dream of a $17,000 long arm quilitng machine that I will probably never own
The only 'rule' I had when my FH was asking about engagement rings was that he was not to spend more than $2,000 - I told him if he felt the need to spend more than that to put it against student loans or our mortgage (we kinda went out of order with the wedding - house thing )
I have to say, this is just my opinion, but I would be really upset with my FH if he worked 60 hour weeks to pay for a piece of jewelry - or even the long arm I dream of - to me there is no physical object than can make up for or replace time we spend together. There are times that we work lots of OT because our jobs get busy and sometimes you have to, but to do it for money or an object would be backwards priorites to me.

yeah but we dont know how many hours he had to work for that ring, we dont know the couple...maybe he didn't even have to bust his a** for it. I know ppl who get $100,000 as their christmas bonus and some even more, again we dont know their situation, his family could be loaded for all we know
