A Yankee fan's pleasant thoughts for the day
I've been thinking about this whole Yankee debacle this morning, and yeah, as a fan, I'm definitely irritated, sad, and sort of embarrassed, but a few other things have come to mind also. Sorry this is long and in geeky outline form!1. Now, I hate the Red Sox as much as the next devoted Yankee fan, but I will say two things:
a. They played really hard and came back from seemingly insurmountable odds. Therefore, they deserve to go to the World Series, and I wish them well.
b. As a longtime New York Knicks fan (***ducks and covers as people start throwing things***) I know what it is like to adore a team that just never quite gets the job done. A team that underachieves. A team that almost gets there... and then fails. A team that occasionally (OK, often) seems to be run by morons. So, I know a little bit about how those Red Sox fans feel, I think. They must be thrilled today. (They are... I know a few of them!
) Good for them -- I say, enjoy! 2. Maybe now George and his Gang will learn a valuable lesson and stop trading away all of their pitching prospects. Homegrown players (Jeter, Pettitte, Posada, Rivera) have been/were great for the Yankees over the years. George, stop cleaning out the farm system, please!
3. Maybe now George et al will learn another valuable lesson -- stop buying players just so other teams can't have them. Buy them only when they fill a need for the Yankees. (Hint: If possible, buy some pitching! And/or Carlos Beltran!)
4. And now, my conspiracy theory: TV and MLB want a Boston/Houston matchup. Massachusetts versus Texas. Kerry versus Bush. An election-themed face off!
That's all I'm gonna say on the topic. Now, I will concentrate on something else... like, uh, the Knicks. Duhhhhhh.

I actually thought of the MA-TX thing too.It would be very ironic if Houston wins Game 7.
I also agree with your other points. As much as it is nice to see 'your' team win, it's kind of nice to see the Red Sox advance after so long.
I just wish they'd do something about their hair.

Re: A Yankee fan's pleasant thoughts for the day
Thanks for your post, it made me
. For me it is now on to college basketball, I even changed my avatar already. Last night at the end of the game my mom called and said 'we can't have it all. we already have 2 basketball championships this year. we were the first to win both men & women's.' Good thing I have something to look forward to, although I am not expecting a repeat.

I agree with these as well!! Stop trading away everyone from our farm system...all of our pitching prospects..for older players. $30 million for Kevin Brown, when his health has been such an issue??? C'mon George!!

Very well said....it's nice to hear a Yankees fan being so reasonable and open minded!
I love the theory about the election themed world series..one of my friends mentioned that to me last night during the game!

They shouldn't sign Beltran. He's an incredible player but they don't need more offense. They lost because of starting pitching and because of the bullpen.

Yeah, I see what you're saying... but I'm also thinking that he's good defensively. He's made some incredible catches and plays this season. And I keep hearing rumors that Bernie will retire fairly soon. (Could be totally wrong, though.)
Sorry, TwoBugs!

I def. agree with the pitching thing.
But DH is thinking that Bernie will retire, leaving it wide open for Beltran to scoot in there. Plus, the Yanks are one of the few teams that could probably afford him...

Re: A Yankee fan's pleasant thoughts for the day
OK I know I said I wouldn't be on the boards for a few days.. and for the most part, I'm not up for rehashing any of it. I truly give the Yankee fans credit for being able to function after what just transpired, but I for one canont even think clearly about the fact that we just made history in the worst possible fashion ever
That said, I just wanted to let SweetAdeline know that you rock! You were far more eloquent in your words than I EVER could be, and you truly give us Yankee fans a good name
You rock!!!
I am SO with you on #2 and 3. Right ON point
However, I wish I could be so big as to say that I want to see the Sox go all the way. I don't at all. Sure I respect them and sure they are the better team, and the totally deserve to be headed for the WS. They outplayed us and embarrassed us and they are true champions of the ALCS. But that still doesn't mean I want to see them be WS CHamps. Not at all
You can call me bitter, and thats fine. I will admit that I AM BITTER this morning. But the LAST THING I would ever want to see , even if the Yankees were dead last and not even in the running, is the Sox win the World Series. Its the nature of our rivalry. And I'm sure every Sox fan would say the same if the tables were turned
I am an American League girl thru and thru, but this is the one year I have to say ......Go National League!!

Agreed, however, here in Bean town, we were not thinking about the election so much and Shilling vs. Clemens . . . . . .
This would make GREAT TV for Bostonians . . .
