An example of how different and unique New York Weddings are.
I emailed my friend whose coming from Mass. the menu so she would know what was going on, etc.
Here is what she wrote back, LOL.
Bethy,
How many people are going to the wedding? How many did you invite? I was showing my friend the menu and she couldn't believe it. She just showed a woman she's working with, who's planning a wedding for her daughter, and the woman was shocked. Are those choices, or are you having everything there? Are they serving everything on that list? We are all confused.
Tari
I explained to her what a dessert cafe is and the cocktail stations, plus the passed ones... so cute and funny at the same time

mMy friend from a small town upstate went to a wedding in Staten Island and wore a skirt & shiny top & said she was shocked how casually dressed people came to to the church & then how they got all done up in 'prom dresses'. I know somw peopel can go overboard, but my friend wore that same skirt outfit to a friend's wedding & in my NY opinion, it wasn't dressy enough for a Saturday night, even if it was in CT.

I went to school in Rhode Island so most of my friends are from New England - it's the same thing with them. One of them got married the year after college. I went in a long dress (Saturday night wedding) only to find that it was in a tent on her FH's parents' farm! There was a horse about 15 feet from where we were eating. All the groomsmen got changed into sneakers the second we got to the reception. It was interesting to say the least.

At my cousins wedding in San Diego I was caught a little off guard when I realized their smallish cocktail hour spread was really the buffet dinner

That's pretty common in most other areas. I've been to weddings in PA, CA & CT that had that.

Last year I went to an upstate NY wedding with my FH. My FH was in the wedding party and was told that it was going to be a really 'lavish' wedding. At the church, they had an 8 piece orchestra and 2 singers!
I did not eat all day because I was saving myself for the cocktail hour! Needless to say, when we arrived at the country club, we were served crackers, fruit and CHILI for the cocktail hour and then an inedible dinner. I ended up getting soooo drunk because I hadn't eaten anything all day / night!

Yes, I must say NY weddings are quite different than what I'm used to. We live in Maine...it's normal to have a choice of entree on the RSVP. It's normal for people to not get all dressed up. And it's normal to have a cash bar. Heck, we're having our wedding on a lake and having a BBQ and a keg of local beer. I'm making sure no one wears a suit! (unless it's a bathing suit!)

Re: An example of how different and unique New York Weddings are.
the reason that ny york weddings are like that is because , well we dont have a problem paying for the wedding for the next 10 years, and in some cases it will pe paid for after the marrage lasts
jonn
p.s. i think it is so ridiculous to spend 40,00 for a wedding, use the money for something that is needed not a party for friends....

I grew up in Iowa and am having the same experience. We are getting married out here because I have lived in NYC for six years. It's tough to explain some of the traditions to friends and family back in Iowa - esp since we are having a Jewish wedding.

Yes, here in San Diego things are much different. You'd be hard pressed to even find a place that offered a cocktail hour. Although it's very common to indicate dinner preference on the response card, at one wedding I was in, there wasn't even a choice - it was chicken or nothing! Cash bars are also expected. You're lucky if you get a free glass of champagne for the toast!

Our menu baffled all our relatives coming from Wisconsin! They coulnd't believe there was a full sit down meal after the CH!
We told them we were getting limos & they asked why? Out there the bride/groom drive in their own cars or pickup trucks....hmmm....me in a BIG white dress drivin down the road in my Mom's old Green Volvo wagon...

I think this last remark is judgemental. Just because you wouldn't spend the money on a wedding doesn't mean you should make suggestions as to how other people spend their money.
ps....not everyone goes into debt for their wedding.

Re: An example of how different and unique New York Weddings are.
We went to a college friend's wedding in CT and we thought they had a decent CH spread. We told our friends not to eat too much and save room for the dinner. Then the DJ announces something to the effect that it is your last chance to eat, they are closing the buffet. We were like WHAT? It was the first time I actually ate at the Venetian hour. The weekend before we had just gone to my cousin's wedding at Carlyle. What a difference. My cousin's CH was double the size of their buffet.
Since my fiance' went to college in CT, I have been to many CT weddings. And we had to choose our meal when we RSVP'd for all the weddings in CT. Most of them are really nice. I have found that it definately depends on where in CT. The biggest difference is the CH - they are going to be SHOCKED at our wedding. The other difference is that more of them give actual presents for wedding gifts.
I have a couple of friends down south and from the midwest. They are blown away by our preperations so far. We have had some frank discussions about gifts and I can't believe the difference. Acceptable shower gift = $20-30 / Wedding gift = $50 -80. Anything more is considered very generous. LOL.
