No, my friend is getting engaged soon to a Man who has already been married. They want to get an annullment. The wife cheated on him, stole from his family, did drugs, etc. So I was curious how expensive it was. I heard somewhere that it could be in the thousands. Do you know?

It varies from church to church. I myself did not get one. I spent $$$ to get divorced legally and my husband, then fiance didn't want to spend any more $$ for me to become 'a good catholic ' again. Here is a link to a website that might be helpful http://www.ny-archdiocese.org/pastoral/faq.html

Annulment costs can be in the thousands but more importantly, it is also a long process. From what I understand, and I am by no means an expert, you must do a lot of personal writing about your experience in the marriage. Also, if the x-spouse, contests the annulment it is much harder. I think the best thing to do is to have your friend speak to her Priest. He will be able to outline the process for them. I wish them both luck and happiness.

Thank you all so much. I will advise her to do that. They don't have that kind of money.

Also, I know alot of churches will not let you set a date or even be penciled in until the annulment is completed

I got an anullment

Went through the process about 2 years ago. Cost: $1200 (but, believe it or not, you can pay in intsallments!) The whole idea behind the process is that the church is trying to find out whether you had a valid marriage from its start - if you got married for reasons other than love, if there were problems from the get-go, etc. It is a long process, but a lot of that depends on how quickly you do your stuff. That includes writing a VERY soul-searching and introspective personal history. (mine was about 12 pages, typed) Also, as someone on the board said, it is easier if the ex consents. (the church will mail him/her a copy of a short form just saying you want the marriage annulled and the grounds on which you believe it should be done (I think there are about 4 or 5 on a list to choose from, or you can try to work something out with the church rep assigned to help you through the process) If the ex does not consent, he/she must argue (in writing) their case. Needless to say, this can REALLY drag things out. I was lucky, my ex consented. Then, after all the paperwork is done, you have a meeting with a priest and a mental health professional, both of which have read your papers (including that personal history). It sounds painful, but it really was not bad. The Rockville Center priest who interviewed me was quite empathetic and understanding. And the psychologist didn''t ask much. The interview lasted about 15 minutes. About three months after that, I had a decision - the anullment had gone through. Bottom line: Mine took about a year (though, like I said, times vary), but it was WELL worth it... I know thw word closure doesn''t mean much these days, but the whole process really did help put what was a painful first marriage behind me. If that''s what your friend is looking for, I would say do it. If he just wants to get one so he can marry in a church again - I guess he''ll have to figure out how much that means. Hope this helped. My best, and good luck! Allison

Thank you SO much for sharing Alison

I bet your story will really help people who are afraid to even consider the process. I am glad that you have been able to find the right person to share your life with. God Bless.
