ANY nurses, doctors or anybody who works in a hospital

Original post by Espo22

ok i dont know how normal this is and how long it usually takes. But my dad is still in the hospital, yesterday they did a heart test and he has 2 arteries blocked so they told him yesterday that they will transfer him to Lennox hill hospital in the city. They are transferring him to this hospital because they specialize in the heart and are very good. He will either get the balloon which they think most likely, or bypass. When he gets to lennox hill they'll figure it out more. BUT since last night around 5pm they told my dad that lennox hill is sending over an ambulance to get him. UHMMMMM i just called my dad before bc i was going to go after work to lennox hill but they STILL haven't transferred him. When i spoke to him he got off the phone quickly bc the nurse was calling lennox hill at that moment to find out W** is going on.

Now i guess it depends on availability of the ambulance and probably is hard with the fact that they have to go from manhattan to queens to get him and then back but still its been almost 24 hours.

I just told fh a few mins ago and he couldn't believe, and even said he'll drive him if its possible. Would they even allow that? or does the ambulance have to bring him? and is it normal to wait this D*mn long, its getting frustrating.

wondering why they aren't sending him to st. francis which is like the best heart hospital?

i have bad vibes with lennox b/c my mom was in there (like, 20 years ago) and it was just an awful experience but that was in psych so it's totally different.

i guess his doc must be affiliated with lennox, but my dad, my BILs dads were all at st francis.

i'm not sure why it's taking so long to get him

i have no idea. My dad asked to go to LIJ but they said Lennox. It might be because many of the specialists who would come to the hospital a few times a week are affiliated with Lennox but not sure. It is a very good hospital though, and my mom spoke to a few doctors she knows to ask them about it.

i'm sure they know better than i do. I hope it all works out!

Denise, my dad has probably spent more of my adult life in hospitals, due to heart and many other issues, (he's had 3 heart attacks plus some) than out of them unfortunately so I've gotten to know them really well.

Unfortunately this is very normal and very expected. They NEVER transfer you when they say they will and they usually never actually operate or perform any procedure until way later than they say they will. And no, no one can transport him except the ambulance. As the other girls have said, it depends on lots of things, normally a bed actually being open in the second hospital. No sense bringing him there if he's going to end up laying in his bed in the hallway (been there) waiting for a room to open, so it's better for now if he stays where he is.

FM me if you have any questions.

i am so sorry about your father

Thank you to all you girls for answering my question and seeing this is normal procedure. I guess what is annoying is that they should explain this to him. Tell him that it might take a while and that they're probably waiting for a bed to open up, instead of saying last night 'ok theyre on their way'

I worked as a paramedic doing interfascility transfer which is what they are going to do with your dad.

The hold up is probably because they are waiting to get final insurance approval for your dad and all the paperwork out of the way so there are no problems as well as make sure there is a bed available for him.

If he is going for an angiogram tomorrow he is probably on a bunch of medication and a heart monitor. He HAS TO GO BY AMBULANCE. If he leaves in his own car 1) INsurance won't pay for ANYTHING because he would have to sign out AMA (Against Medical Advice) and 2. They won't save the bed for him at Lenox HIll.

I know its a PITA but this is how these things work, sounds like they are doing everything right so far.

Let me know if you have any more questions

Sorry your dad is going through this. Unfortunately it is the way of the hospital world. But like Karin said it is better to know he is not ontop of the critical list.

I know it is scary but at least they found it before it became even more of a problem.

They most likely are transfering him to Lenox because that is who they (and the doctors) are affiliated with.

for a quick transport and speedy recovery.

thank you so much for the info see if we were given these answers yesterday or even today then it'd be fine, its understandable. But nobody saying why its taking long is whats frustrating my dad and he starts to pace and going crazy which is the last thing he needs now. He asked the nurse and she said 'i don't know, im gonna call to find out why they haven't come yet' i mean she made it seem like it wasnt normal for this to happen so thats why i asked.

well hopefully by tonight they'll take him, but i guess either way it'll be fine actually. He is finally getting the treatment he needs so thats the most important

its true and i told him that. He was so scared last night but i said be glad this happened now because otherwise you would've continued eating like cr*p and not taking care of yourself and it could've been worse.

Thank you well now that i know its the norm, i'll call my dad to tell him so this way he can calm down. They made the man get dressed and ready from 6:30 last night

NO problem, a lot of times if nurses aren't use to transferring patients they are not quite sure how ong things take. The good thing is, he is not critical and therefore the transport should be uneventful! Lenox HIll has a GREAT Cardiaca Unit!!! I've transferred MANY MANY patients there and they ahve all done great so he is in good hands!!!

dont leave the abulance has to take him to the other hospital. You need to found out the hospital even call over for an ambulnace. Also if he takes himself out it might be signed out AMA and then he will be resp. for all the bills from that hospital.

no hes not signing himself out. I was going to call the hospital and ask if we can bring my dad ourselves but if we can't then yeah we wouldn't. Both FH and I said that its very likely we can't but maybe to ask. My dad has no desire to leave

Thanks. But it's ok. It's always been his life so I'm used to it. And unfortunately it's also par for the course for them to tell the patient that they're leaving soon because in the beginning of the day they have no idea how long it will take for a bed to open, they just open the dr notes and its says Patient transfer today so they tell the patient, so the poor patient thinks they're outta there soon, and they're stuck waiting all day, sometimes even into the next day, or get woken up in the middle of the night to be transferred (that's the worst). They run their own agendas and it ***** but you're just left to cope with that as best they can. Just try and tell your dad to relax and that at least now he knows what he's in for should this happen again. It's funny cause my dad was (before he had to retire for medical reasons) a radiology tech at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx for 30 years so he'd always laugh in the Drs and nurses faces when they'd say to him, 'ok Mr. Alissa's dad, you're getting out of here soon' and he'd be like, who do you think you're fooling you and I both know I'm not going anywhere for hours.

yeah i guess they have no other choice but to tell them that since they don't even know how long it would take.
