Anybody did an afternoon reception?

Original post by Treeoflife

What was your experience having an afternoon reception? How was the atmosphere? would it be different from an evening wedding.

We are going to have a cocktail hour and sit-in dinner of four courses. The reception starts at 1.30-6.30pm. Is that much food for an afternoon.

As far as food, I think people will eat MORE in the afternoon. I know if I were going to an afternoon wedding I wouldn't eat all morning so I could fill up on the good stuff later on.
However, at an evening reception most people wont go the entire day without eating.

im having an afternoon reception and actaully wanted it for the mere fact that theres beautiful grounds to walk around that you wouldnt be able to see in the dark...

ive also been to an afternoon wedding... and everyone was def dancing, drinkin, eatin, and having a great time! it was actually pretty wild... i think it will all depend on the type of crowd you'll be having that will make or break the afternoon recpetion

Same reason we chose afternoon!

totally fine for afternoon wedding. That is what we were doing and even an after party later on

plus, the beauty of our RH is lost at night

my Mass was 10:45 AM and my cocktail hour started at 1:00 PM. it was FINE! we had an absolute blast... i wouldn't have changed it for anything. we then were partying til midnight with our friends and family at the hotel. the after-party was great and really gave us a chance to hang with OOT guests.

it was the best... i got dressed at 9 AM for the photographer and didnt' take my dress off until 1 AM... i was a bride ALL day and then some... LOVED it!

Also, we saved a LOT of money this way... the hall was cheaper and the band was cheaper because they were able to book an evening gig as well.

DO IT!

I am also having an afternoon reception.. it saved us a ton of money (Sat. evening prices were astronomical!!) and plus we felt that the beauty and ambience of our RH was better captured during the day.

Question: for brides who are/having an after party, what exactly did you gals do?

We did an after party. Almost everyone went, including our parents. etc. We went to a place right up the road from our RH. It wasn't a 'club' or a restaurant, but kind of in between. We got a bunch of tables on the deck and we had our bus for our OOT guests go from the reception to the after party & then do runs back & forth to the hotel.

Here is where we went:
Dockers

Some people stayed for 1 drink, some stayed for hours. We were all back at the hotel by like 8 or 9. Most people were all done after that.

I would say for the guests.. its not a big difference.. in fact the sunlight can be beautiful.

the drawback is how early the bridal party needs to get ready for the day.. and if you plan to use a salon, you usually have to pay extra for them to open up early in the morning.

yes - good point. Our hair & makeup started at 5 am. photos at 9. Ceremony at 11. It was a long day.

I think the only diffrence would be it wouldn't be as formal....DH and I had a morning ceremony (we had everything at Russo's) at 11:30am-12pm- then a Sunday brunch menu CH was from 12pm-1pm followed by dinner/reception from 1-5pm- there was soooo much food each guest commented how much food there was, how stuffed they were when they left.

Also the prices for the RH were less expensive if you do a early afternoon I believe.

But yes for the bridal party it could be a long day.. I was up at 5am and into hair and makeup at 7-8am. I was ready to go by 9:30am and had to be at Russo's for photos by 10am.

Re: Anybody did an afternoon reception?

We had an afternoon reception and it worked out great! It was wonderful for pictures (since it was in the fall and gets dark early) at the beautiful swan club. The reception was pumpin' not much different than an evening wedding other than that it was light out. Everyone danced, we served the normal 4 course meal....ect. FM me if you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to help!

Good luck and Happy Planning!

the wedding of the year was an afternoon party and it was great - we ate, drank and danced like it was a night wedding and so did everyone else...

Our ceremony is at 11 and our cocktail hour is at 1:30 ending our reception at 6:30 - Same as you at the CB. We too couldn't afford an evening wedding but I kind of like the fact that our wedding will be over at 6:30 because then I can go hang out with family and friends after and party some more Either way, you're going to have a blast at your wedding!
