Anyone else see the report about pharmacists not filling perscriptions for birth control pills?

Original post by heidla

It was on the Nightly news last night. Some pharmacists refusing to fill perscriptions for the pill and the morning after pill because of their religious beliefs. Just curious what you all think.

I understand having convictions, but IMO you should do your job. If it bothers you that much then I think you should find a new line of work.

Not yet, this is helping pass the time on a particularly boring day at work.

A person can hold religious or moral convictions and beliefs and not have to make a spectacle of themselves because of it.

What I mean by this is that if you are a pharmacist that does not wish to fill BCP prescriptions because of such beliefs, you should either A. open your own pharmacy so people can choose to agree with you or not (just like you have a choice) by going or not going to your pharmacy (and THAT doesn't even necessarily have to mean they agree with you or not).

Or B. work for a pharmacy with a moral policy or religious affiliation that is in keeping with yours.... though I don't personally know of any that exist.

When you choose to believe in something, follow a principle or dogma, etc you have to work YOUR life around it... not expect everyone else to work around you.... that would be easy then, wouldn't it?

I have to say I am quite entertained reading this.

Perhaps you haven't needed to seek one out.

No, I haven't had to... that's why I don't know of any... but my guess is that there probably are plenty.

That's absolutely true. I am sure my pharmacy (a large chain) wouldn't go for it and would fire any employee who refuses to dispense any type of legal medication.

I would guess that pharmacies that are doing it are Mom and Pop type places, where the proprietors can make the rules.

There was a lengthy article in Prevention magazine about this recently. CVS and Kmart pharmacies were both mentioned. A CVS pharmacist refused to fill a script, but the woman eventually had it filled by someone else at the store. I don't know if there were repercussions for the pharmacist.

Three states have 'conscience clauses' for pharmacists, which I guess allow them to decline filling certain prescriptions.

According to this article, there are doctors and pharmacists who believe that hormonal birth control methods are responsible for tens of thousands of 'silent' abortions.

I'm just going to say this last bit and then I'm done with this thread.

Perhaps then, these same docs and pharmacists would prefer to overturn Roe v. Wade and have women go back to abandoned store fronts and other unsanitary methods, this way we can have LOUD abortions.

This issue is complcated. I can see both sides. I think if it happened to me, I'd complai to the manager and then walk 4 blocks to the next CVS.

Yes legal but moral?

I don't believe that the legal system should necessarily be enforcing morals.

We are talking about Pharmacists who choose not to distribute birth control ... and the government is involved where?

Because you brought up a distinction between legal rights vs 'moral rights'

Yes but the government is not the one saying not moral the individual person is.
