Anyone else see the report about pharmacists not filling perscriptions for birth control pills?

Original post by heidla

It was on the Nightly news last night. Some pharmacists refusing to fill perscriptions for the pill and the morning after pill because of their religious beliefs. Just curious what you all think.

I understand having convictions, but IMO you should do your job. If it bothers you that much then I think you should find a new line of work.

Because you brought up a distinction between legal rights vs 'moral rights'

Yes but the government is not the one saying not moral the individual person is.

The individual is not giving us our BC pills when it is their job to fill our prescriptions. We're not doing anything illegal by taking BC pills!!!!!

According to this article, there are doctors and pharmacists who believe that hormonal birth control methods are responsible for tens of thousands of 'silent' abortions.

Hmm ... again, last time I checked, a LEGAL right.

Yes legal but moral?

I think that when you asked this question ithe religion in government issue was raised. While you(not you personally, but a general you) may have a moral opposition to abortion/or contraception they are both legal in this country.

Abortion and contraception are both legal but I think the point of this topic is: 'Can a pharmacist legally decline to provide abortion pills or BCPs if such action goes against his personal beliefs?'

I think he absolutely can. There is no legal duty to dispense these drugs even though they are legal. It's called free enterprise. He is a businessperson and can run his business or set policies that he sees fit. If people disagree with that policy, they will go to another pharmacy. Of course, this seems like bad business. Although, on the other hand, there are certain groups who may boycott a chain or business if they choose to dispense drugs that they find morally repugnant.

A person can hold religious or moral convictions and beliefs and not have to make a spectacle of themselves because of it.

What I mean by this is that if you are a pharmacist that does not wish to fill BCP prescriptions because of such beliefs, you should either A. open your own pharmacy so people can choose to agree with you or not (just like you have a choice) by going or not going to your pharmacy (and THAT doesn't even necessarily have to mean they agree with you or not).

Or B. work for a pharmacy with a moral policy or religious affiliation that is in keeping with yours.... though I don't personally know of any that exist.

When you choose to believe in something, follow a principle or dogma, etc you have to work YOUR life around it... not expect everyone else to work around you.... that would be easy then, wouldn't it?

JMO.

I agree.

Just a quesrtion to clear things up for me as I read this:

Pharmacists that work in those chain stores like Walgreens and CVS - do they own the pharmacy or are they working for a corporate office?

The pharmacies in chain establishments are owned by the corporation not the individual pharmacists.

Ok - again - just a question:

If the pharmacists that work for Walgreens and CVS, etc. work for a corporation then shouldn't it be up to the corporate office to decide what types of drugs they will or will not dispense? Not the pharmacist themselves?

How would you guys feel if a vet opened a practice but refused to put healthy dogs to sleep (which happens at many vets) bc it goes against what s/he believes in?

I actually know a girl who wanted to be a vet but didn't want to have to put animals to sleep, so she decided against it... I told her that that was a dumb reason for not wanting to go be a vet...But maybe it wasn't...Maybe I should have known that people would try to force her to go against what she believed in...

It most certainly isn't a dumb reason to not become a vet -- it's one of the reasons I didn't either. Unless you open your own practice or find a vet who shares in the same beliefs as you, you're pretty much forced to put healthy dogs asleep. You'd be surprised how many people get cute little puppies and decide a week later that training is too annoying and bring them to the vet to be put down. Millions of healthy puppies/dogs/animals are put to sleep every day. I didn't mean to change the topic, but I thought it was related. If the pharmacists were working for Walgreens or CVS, it's one thing, but if they opened up their own businesses, are dedicated to their professions and to making people healthier, and simply do not want to pay and distribute pills that go against their religion, all the power to them for not letting that get in the way of their dreams. And i didn't feel this way until I started reading others posts. You've all made very valid points.

Re: Anyone else see the report about pharmacists not filling perscriptions for birth control pills?

all i can say is this.....
when i was 19 (and not sexually active, by the way) i had my period for 5 STRAIGHT months.....everyday of every week for 5 months. Finally, my doctor gave me a prescription for Birth Control to regulate my cycle.....
If I had brought that prescription to a pharmacist and he/she refused to fill it at that moment for religious beliefs.....the high levels of hormones running through my body at that moment propbably would have forced me to jump across the counter and strangle them!

I understand that we all have religious and personal beliefs...but we need to realize that everyone has that right. As a teacher, I may not believe everything that my students or their parents believe in...but it's not my place to refuse them an education because of it.

Palebride - by the same token, you also wouldn't force a very religious indian student to buy hamburger meat to sell for a fundraiser if it was against his beliefs, would you?

Matron - That's why fundraisers are generally voluntary...and if a particular student hasd a problem with an item being sold, I would most certainly find an alternative for him/her.

by the way, what kind of a school did you go to that sold hamburger meat for fundraisers????

LOL, it was taking me like an hour to write that message because initially I wrote 'forcing a kosher student to eat a non-kosher snack' and then I remembered you taught older students. I was thinking of like a pep-rally or something. I don't know. I actually had the same problem as you where I'd get my period for 6 mos and then skip 6 mos, and I needed BC to regulate, so I'm naturally pro-BC, but after reading the posts, I could understand why a person would not want to distribute it and still be a good pharmacist. BTW, didn't everyone sell hamburger meat for fundraisers?

Well, leave it to me to change the topic of this heated thread to complete nonsense once again.
