Anyone feel like they aren't the typical bride

Ok so I just wanted to see how everyone else thinks. I have been reading these posts and thinking to myself damn some people are trying so hard to follow the 'BRIDE' rules. I Love being a bride but I don't think I am following the fairytale path of following all the rules.

1st my bridesmaids are in all different dresses (tealength) but my sister the MOH is in a long dress (All the same color though)

Now mind u I got crap for this from the people at the store b/c IT ISN'T NORMAL i felt like saying BITE ME but I didn't

then b/c I think its funny I want my cake topper to be the bride choking the groom, (WHICH MY FH LOVES MIND U) which a friend is going to lend me. I THINK ITS FUNNY
Now listen I am having a classy wedding with me in the EXPENSIVE dress but I want to have fun
Then I got crap b/c I wanted a cupcake cake and I was told you can't have that at an evening wedding EEEEEERRRRRRRR now that PISSED ME OFF. whatever, I did some stuff to please other people now I AM FREAKEN PAYING so should't I have the last say

It's great to be different and add your own style and flare to YOUR wedding.

I wanted the cupcake cake also, but FH thought it was silly. I actually thought he would have gone for it.

Do what is going to make you happy.

Im kind of your typical bride, I mean we are following alot of traditions (fh wont see me before the ceremony) and those types of things...but I wanted to wear sneakers...NO ONE wasletting me do that. I wanted a chocolate iced cake...cant have that either...so we are compromising for certain things. But others we no matter what have the final say.

heh, our bridal party doesn't even have matching outfits! They're all wearing their own stuff... I just asked them to stick to ivory and black so they don't show up clashing....

we're ignoring most american traditions in the ceremony, and we're walking down the isle together, I'm not being given away, no candle ceremony, and our wedding bands will go on the right hand (all in tune with our own cultural traditions).

we have one MOH, one BM and one best man. so, it's an odd #.

our cake is chocolate.

no bo-k toss, conga line, or garter thing...
I think that is most of it....

I think these are just preferences which personalize a wedding.

Whats not normal about a tealength BTW? They are used alot for more casual or summer weddings. I love em personally, much prefer over floor length. I was so confined and hot in my sisters floorlength BM dress in the summer, JMO.

Its your wedding, make it what you want!!!!

I agree...do what YOU want!!! I feel the same way though...I'm following some traditions and then just doing my what I want for others. I think it's all a personal preference.

FH and I already disagreed about the cake...I want chocolate everything ( I LOOOVE chocolate) He says 'who does that?' I told him we dont have do what everyone else does ya know...His wonderful response to that was...well then why don't you wear a mini-skirt down the aisle instead of a dress I can't win with him

I also love the cupcake idea but I know he'll never go for it!!!

Re: Anyone feel like they aren't the typical bride

I don't think I am. I'm amazed at some of the threads I read on this board. I can't believe how many times I've read about brides excusing bad behavior with 'but it's my special daaaay.' And then so many other brides chime in with 'of course it's your special daaaay, do what you want...' Ugh. So many brides seem to forget that they're supposed to be a good hostess, it's not just about whatever you want on your special day. And I laugh when I hear what some of you expect your brideslaves to do! 'She's not doing her job!' as if you're paying this poor woman to wear the tacky dress you picked out and the matching uncomfortable shoes. These are supposed to be your friends and loved ones, treat them as such.

This is only a small percentage of the threads I read here, but it does come up a lot!

I am having a fairly non-traditional wedding. My bp are all picking out their own dresses, different lengths, styles but they will all be black. I don't care how they do thier hair or makeup or what shoes they wear.

I am wearing a silk slinky evening gown type dress. No pouf for me.

My reception is in a restaurant. I did not want a hall.

I wanted a cupcake cake, but that idea was nixed pretty quickly by EVERYBODY!

I am also not having a DJ. I am using my ipod to create playlist and play over the restaurant's sound system.

I don't think I am having a rehersal dinner.

With all of the differences between my wedding and a more traditional one, there are enough traditional elements to satisfy the old-timers.

I have been made to feel 'less than' by other brides (never on here though...i think this site and it's users have been fabulous) because of small details like not getting my BP a limo and stuff like that...

Re: Anyone feel like they aren't the typical bride

I'm in the middle somewhere. I vowed...SERIOUSLY vowed..to NEVER wear a white dress. But..what do you know? I am wearing a diamond white wedding dress. I thought I would be in pink or light blue. But I fell in love with the dress. I still don't feel like a traditional bride...but I'm a typical one just for the fact that I. am. a. bride.

There are some things that FH and I wanted to do differently. Cupcakes instead of 3 tier wedding cake... we won't let anyone change our minds. And those other details (me wearing pink converse) is being kept secret from my sister in law who would veto that in a second. I would stand my ground... but I figure why bother justifying what I want. I'll just keep it a secret and do it anyway. And our invites totally let guests in on our not so traditional wedding.

Do your own thing. Just be happy with your choices and at times if you compromise...brush it off.

heehee BMs are wearing different tea length dresses. MOH is wearing long gown. all in black. everyones wearing bright tangerine shoes. and im gonna skip the cake altogether and substitute it with a 'make you own' dessert bar.

AND my dress is also very expensive and designer (it just ended up that way!)

I didnt think i was a typical bride but according to this thread i must be!!!!!

Re: Anyone feel like they aren't the typical bride

I don't think our wedding will be very typical. I used to work at a catering hall and swore I would never have a 'cookie cutter' wedding. We're having a very non-traditional ceremony (based on our families traditions at least), no limos, a buffet dinner catered by a deli, and a dessert buffet with cupcakes instead of a traditional cake (me and a friend are baking them ourselves). It's a very DIY wedding, but I think it's going to be fabulous.

I think I'm a very laid back bride, not concerned overly concerned with etiquette and rules. I just want my day to be fun for everyone involved.

My MOH and Bridesmaid are wearing whatever they want, any color and style. I don't even know what they are wearing.
I think it is silly to have grown people wearing the same outfits.
I am not doing a bouquet toss or garter toss.
I am having entertainment during dinner. (belly dancer)

YESSSSSS!

1. I don't WANT a bridal shower (but am feeling forced into it by HIS side (one of my bridesmaids). We've been living together: we don't need any more TOWELS or PLATES: and please: no coffee maker (I have a $20 one that works just fine) and I'd rather have the cash so that I could pay for the darn wedding.

2. I DONT CARE how everyone is going to wear their hair and what kind of shoes they will have.

3. I really want to have fun at the wedding: and YES it will be a classy event.

4. I don't cry: not when I find the right dress: not for anything. When I finally found these items it's because I've been looking and doing my research. Good luck photographer!

5. You should see my dress

Re: Anyone feel like they aren't the typical bride

I hear you. I'm trying to avoid the cookie cutter wedding, too. My girls are wearing tea-length (at night, in Nov--shocking!) and my MOH is wearing a gown. I even said my MOH could go the non-bridal route. (She didn't, but loves her dress so that makes me happy.)
I'm not having a cake topper; I want a chocolate (on outside) cake; I told my RH I didn't want an ice swan; I want chocolate brown and red linens instead of ivory, and the list goes on.
In the end, especially when you're paying, you gotta do what makes you happy. And when everyone else has a great time at your wedding and LOVESSS the cupcake cake you'll get to say I told you so—if not out loud than at least in your mind

I guess most of us are silly then

SO funny, b/c I think that all the time. My girls are wearing different dresses, letting them wear whatever shoes or hairstyle they want. I told them to just look nice. They can't believe how laxed I'm being. Oh and my numbers are so not even but I was not going to be forced into adding BM's so that they are even. Whatever...

I also couldn't picture myself wearing a white dress, it's light gold. And I can't figure how I'm wearing my hair b/c I don't want the typical 'bride' updo, it's just not me. I also want seductive, sexy make up. No natural make up here.

I could probably go on, but point being do what makes you comfortable. You don't want to look back and regret not doing or doing something.

Good Luck!
