Anyone having problems finding a home for sale?

It looks like my FI and I are going to be renting for a couple of years. House prices are crazy. Anyone else having problems? I'm looking for homes in the Greenlawn, Huntington, Norhtport area. If anyone knows someone selling their house let me know.

feel your pain. We have been looking for houses since August. The prices for houses are so high. I am looking on the South shore (West Islip to Sayville) and you really can't find anything 'nice' for under $300,000. Lots of money!

Are you working with any realtors? I have a few working for me. I also just drive through the neighborhoods looking for the houses.

Good luck. You are not alone!

We just had a bid on a house accepted.. the prices are INSANE.. We decided on a neighborhood and looked around.. We finally found a house that was more money than we thought we would spend however it doesnt look like prices are going to come down any time soon...

There's 2 homes by me are for sale (I'm in Huntington, on the Greenlawn border):

Victorian House With History

and

From Realtor.com

Don't know if that's what you had in mind. Homes go quick around this area. Usually within a day.

We just signed the contract on Friday for our new house. I can't believe it is actually happening.

This is why FI and I are having our house built in FL.

Houses up here are a fortune and some need work put into them. We're having our house built and its costing half the price of homes up here. And it comes with everything (fridge, stove, microwave, etc..)

CarrieAnn,
Doesn't mean they'll get it. (They just put it on the market at the end of last month.)

Jenny, are you kidding? A huge, historic Victorian that is on the market for $800K is not going to sell for anywhere near $300K. They WILL get at least $750K for that house...

Funn you bring it up, we have been looking for months now and I am totally disgusted at what is out there.... expensive dumps! I think we are gonna start the apartment hunt now as well, i dont think it is that bad a thing to do, hey you never know prices may come down in the next year or so.

The prices of homes are outrageous. We are actually thinking of leaving LI and heading north.

Its frustrating. $380,000 for a started cape in Merrick is ridiculous.

I would love to move out of NY to buy a home.. For the price we are going to spend we can probably buy a MANSION any where else.. Frank wants to stay in NY for a while.. the resale value in the town we are in is pretty good so im not worried.. its just a small fortune.. then you add the taxes and that puts about another 400.00-500.00 on top of the Monthly mortgage payment...

I'm sure they will get the asking price for that house - unless there's something very wrong with it.

DH and I have been looking for a few months now, and it is extremely depressing and frustrating. Unfortunately, we have to stay on LI, in Nassau to be exact. We're looking in towns that aren't even our first choices, and the starter homes are about $350K-$400K. But people can still afford this, because they're selling like crazy - at practically full asking price, or close enough so that it's still very discouraging. There's something very wrong with that - I just hope it changes soon

Girls I TOTALLY feel your pain. We have been half-a$$ looking for 3 years now (going to open houses here and there) and now have to wait til after the wedding to seriously look. We are getting married in Sept and FH wants to be in a new house by Christmas
in Commack, Smithtown, East Northport, Kings Park area. Once he realized what a farce that was under $300K, he started looking in Massapequa, West Islip and Wantagh. HA!

I keep saying let's go upstate to Orange or Rockland. But nooooooooo.

We did not even attempt to look on Long Island, we knew that we could not afford anything that we wanted in a house out there. We have been looking in Connecticut, but even there you are looking at an hour outside of NYC. Houses are still hovering around the 300K range, but they are three bedrooms w. an acre of land. To us its worth it, I will just have to get a new job in CT once we finally find a house and move. The whole process is horribly stressful- this weekend we were looking at houses, and I kept walking around trying to imagine living in one of them!! It felt so surreal.

The house market is absolutely crazy. The houses are so expensive and that is just for starter homes that need work. We would have no problem paying the morgage payments but its the downpayment that is the killer. I have no idea how we are going to save $80,000 to buy a house. Ugh its so frustrating.

It took us a year to find our house. The market is absolutely ridiculous now. When we were just about to give up....we found it.

Good luck!

DITTO SUZANNE.....I WOULD LOVE TO GET OUT OF HERE TOO!!! I THINK ITS RIDICULOUS TO SPEND THIS KIND OF MONEY..AND MOST OF THE HOUSES ARE C**P TOO! YOU CAN DEFINITELY FIND SOMETHING SO MUCH BETTER IN ANOTHER STATE...I WOULD LOVE TO MOVE WEST TO CO....BUT HE WANTS TO STAY TOO...HE DOESNT FEEL HE WOULD MAKE AS MUCH $$ OVER THERE....BUT TO ME THAT WOULDNT MATTER....WE ARE MOST LIKELY RENTING FOR A YEAR AND TAKE IT FROM THERE....EVEN THAT IS VERY HIGH....(WELL FOR WHAT WE ARE LOOKING AT)
