Not everyone is like this, but It's A LOT of people. The competitiveness of who has what annoys me. If you have something better then someone else, they have something nasty to say. If you don't, they still have something to say. I see like 11 year olds with coach and LV bags, top of the line cell phones, with tons of makeup on. Drives me nuts.

I don't think that the 'LI Life' is necessarily shallow and plastic....of course there are many people on LI that represent that, but on the other hand there are many people that just want to live healthy, fulfilling, successful lives.

Thank you! I cant understand how so many people are saying that LI is filled with 'plastic' people who are shallow... OF COURSE they are out there, BUT I completely disagree that it is the Long Island Lifestyle...

Most of the people in my neighborhood are shallow. And almost every area on LI that I've seen is that way too. Its keeping up with the Joneses here. It is SO different in other states. I can't wait to leave LI. Apart from the rising cost of housing, everything here is just getting ridiculous.

I left Long Island...same thing where I am...a mix of people, some just happen to be more inclined to be one up on everyone else, my point is that it is not a LI thing... Ever been to Florida- same thing, CT- same thing-California- same thing... I can go on but I wont. I simply think that the generalization of who and what Long Island is comprised of is incorrect...and I do not think it is an 'American Dream' My thinking has always been that the American Dream is for a good life...job, kids, health, house.,happy marriage... (IF THAT is what your dream is-but everyone has a different dream)

I definitely agree- I am just a hard working person like everyone else I know on LI and I really do not know many of the people they describe. Instead of complaining, I am happy that I live in America where we have so many opportunities and choices of where to live and I dont like generalizations because it is nto fair to the many LIers who just care about making a nice life for their families. If you dont want to live on LI that is fine but to make generalizations is just not fair to the others who are here and not like that.

The American Dream is different for everyone.

Maybe someone's dream is to have their husband pull in all the dough so they can get fake boobs and sit in the bagel store all day and drive a mercedes.

Just because its not your dream (or mine!) doesn't make it right or wrong.

As long as you are happy, who cares what other people think of you!! And you can be happy for what you have and who you are anywhere, on LI or off.

I love Long Island because of it's conveniences...but at the same time I hate it because of that as well. I can't stand that the sh*tty house down the block from my parents is over $500K. I hate that there really is no scenery here. I just want to live in a not so crowded place with my FH and our future children...oh and of course Benny the dog. I am not into plastic surgery - I don't think I could go under the knife just to look better. Just let me be happy and preferably living debt free. I don't need the fancy car. Just something that is reliable and will get me from point A to point B! (I would prefer it not be an old jalopy of course!) Don't need the lexus, mercedes or beamer...give me a good ol' honda or something.

I could go on forever - but the jist of this is - I agree with you!

I agree with you!!! I am not 'from' LI and they all disgust me---to an extent. I remember when birthday parties were water balloons, cake, ice cream, opening underwear from mom (grr), sleepovers and something you didn't really do until you were 8....my 4 year old has gone to 5 parties that were basically at kiddie catering halls...I mean, what else can you call them? It's ridiculous and now we will have to give her one because she enjoys them and now wants one for her birthday! A friend of mine takes her 5 year old a fresh, warm bagel every Wednesday for lunch! My daughter will have to make due with PB&J...that's just stupid. I will not drive a mini-van no matter what...SUV only because there are so many already on the road that in my tiny car, I can't see *** is going on. Of course, most young adults are moving away because thanks to the middle-aged parents we all have, none of us can afford to live here anymore! Where I grew up, $1800 rent got you a 5BR house or a 3-4BR apt. with a garage and gated security and probably included a few utilities! Insanity.

I'm not really a complainer, but this struck a cord with me! Glad someone else hates the 'li lifestyle' too!

It is really wrong to generalize everyone like this. All the people I know aren't this way and are hard workers making a life for their families and I dont think it is fair to the many people who care about morals and values and raising a healthy, caring family here on LI like my granparents and parents did.

Don't get nme wrong here, ladies - my gma lived in LI forever - and she rocks... I also have much family and friends here - and love where I live, love the beaches, the hiking, the artsyness of Huntington... there are people who want more than that shallow lifestyle - and thats all I'm saying - um - I live here too? I am not the thing I was talking about, and neither are you ladies - the generalization is not so much to specific people (hence, the 'generalization', but really the mentality that we are fed and expected to live by - don't get lost in the finger pointing, ladies - I am not pointing to anyone - I am pointing to the societal norms (or UN-norms...) that tell us - see - this is what you should be like, look like, own, etc - and some people fall victim to it - I am not talking about you, your gma, my gma, my dad, your dad, or even my FH and daughters, who never stepped foot out of LI. This was not to offend - simply to challenge! I applaud you ladies for being in the team that fight that, and work hard, and know whats important in life!!! We are all on the same team here!!!

also, I grew up in Manhattan, and that mentality is there too, and in Vermont where I lived - so it's more a broader sense of what we want...

Even though I was offended by what you wrote I am trying to see through that and help you with words of advice, not that I'm an expert, but...
I really feel very bad for you that you have such a negative outlook on life and people in general.
It's unfair to generalize the idea of the 'American Dream' because everyone's dream is different and unique to who they are.
I know people who's dreams are to live in the city in an apartment their whole life and never get married. Or people that want to donate every penny they have to charity. I also know people who just want to travel around the world forever, then I know people who want the picket fence, kids, and two dogs. Of course I know some who have a passion for jewelry so they work hard for their money and decide to spend it on diamonds.
The point is, do whatever makes you happy and don't frown upon others unfairly because it happens to differ from what you want in life... it's just going to hurt other people's feelings and is not going to help you in your life and the pursuit of your dreams.
Of course be disappointed in people who intentionally hurt others (you can't be happy all the time in this world) but if they want to get their nose fixed because others have poked fun at it their entire lives--then that's their dream. If they want to have a normal size chest because they are as flat as a board and can't get out of training bras as an adult woman--then that's their dream. (Unfortunately, I can relate to that!! LOL)
Your dream should be do what makes YOU happy and not to worry about what others are doing because ultimately that doesn't matter in your life. You need to be happy with yourself first in order to really view the world in a positive light.
I really hope you find that.

Sorry I offended you - but what I am saying is that these women do NOT look happy - and they aren't happy because I know some of them and they tell me that, and they think they need to do another nip, another tuck, another car, another this, and that will be the answer - it is sad....

Actually, my outlook is extremely positive and happy. As you know nothing about me, and I know nothing about you - I will also not get offended by that. My field of work is a very challenging field that always requires me to be upbeat and happy - and hopeful. I practice Buddhism and go to a Buddhist temple to make sure I keep myself grounded and aware - which is very challenging...

also - my gma had a little surgery, and she is awesome... who's to say I won't have it it in my life too? Thats not what I was talking about. I had a breast reduction when I was 21 - so I did something cosmetic too... my sister died when she was 38 from cancer... on her deathbed, she told me she wished she had more in her life 0- and she had EVERYTHING - house, kids, dogs, Lexus SUVs, etc... not to get so dark on you ladies, but this is somehting I always felt alone with - surrounded by people following the beat of the same drum, and I'm just not on that path... When I wasn't sure I wanted to toss my bokay, I checked in here, and now I'm checking on this too - and starting a very deep and thoughtful thread...

I know what I want is not what most people want, and would never expect it... but when you see some people who have everythign and still look so miserable, it makes you think....

..And I thought I was the only one.. You have me cracking up over here!! FH wont let me ge them for the same reason so I am in the same boat as you.. Thank god for the 'Miracle Bra'

I guess Big boobs thats my new American Dream

Before I met my FH my American Dream was to NOT have to give each guy I dated 'the disclaimer' (as I lovingly refer to it) before they saw 'them' for the first time. EXAMPLE...
'Oh, Jeff, umm before you, umm well--do that I just want to let you know that you might be let down a little because umm, I wear a padded bra so what you see with my shirt on.. umm, isn't exactly what you see with it and the bra off. I'm so sorry!' *If I don't do that then I get that let down look on their face when it comes off!!!*
Thank GOD I don't have to ever worry about that again b/c it's just FH and he's already had the disclaimer which he thought was SO funny!
Hey, I call a spade a spade!!

Oh - yes, the disclaimer, well, after breast-reduction surgery - esp from 10 years ago - you are left with some significant scars, so I know that disclaimer all too well!!!

my FH actually knew when he felt them for the 1st time as he was with 2 other GF in his life who had it too - whats THAT about???

I just had to put my two cents in here.

I have lived in Long Island all my life, and this is definitely NOT the impression I get from the vast majority of the people living here.

Maybe there are certain parts that are very wealthy and are like this stereotype you speak of, but for the most part, I would say thats a VERY small amount of communities (maybe 5-10%) compared to the average middle class neighborhood in Long Island.

I see mostly hardworking mothers AND fathers, trying to educate and raise their children in good communities....

it depends on what you consider 'the american dream.' i think the american dream is more about the opportunities this country provides and the chance to go as far as your goals, dreams and abilities take you.

this:

middle aged women with these plastic bodies and fake boobs and diamonds everywhere and rhinestone jeans....

just sounds like a bunch of disturbed people who belong on dr. 90210

Wow greta, I came on here to write pretty much this...so thank you for posting exactly what I meant to say!

Yes, I want the 'American Dream', as I came here for this very reason. The house, the white picket fence, the kids, the dog, the cat, the loving husband, the career...I want it all. And thank God I'm moving closer to it. But to me that dream can be achieved anywhere, definitely not just on LI. And it's not a physical thing to me or a status thing. It's a simple, family thing...it's working to enjoy your life, not living to work. Because of this the dream will be happening outside of NY for my husband and me.

Same here - we are moving out of NY one day - I know for us it would be the only way we could afford a house... but in the meantime, looks like we will be cramming FH's daughters and our kids in a rented house or apt... I worked hard for my carrer, so I'm never getting rid of that no matter where we wind up!!!

I think what got lost in the translation, and the reason I put it in quotes, is what we are told - this is YOUR 'american Dream' - now go get it, or you are a failure...

It was so great hearing your thoughts on this!!! Thanks ladies - I know my perspective was expanded, as I hope others were as well! This is why I love this site some times - so many interesting people coming from so many different places!!!

is there a reason why you were with all of these people that you seem to have nothing in common with? maybe if you surround yourself with more down to earth people, you won't be so down on Long Island because although such people are stereotypical of 'LI', you shouldn't want to leave because of them. There are materialistic and superficial all over the nation. You need to seek out people who are more like you.

thats why i moved to CT...its not as bad here..its bad but not AS bad..
I think we an easily say that LI is not your typical place....

too much neuvo rich people...flaunting thier money ... old ladies wearing juicy couture sweat pants...getting their hair blown out every day...having their 10 nannies care for their kids whle they are out getting their nails done banging their personal trainer while their businessman husband is working 12 hours a day and probably banging his secretary...

its disgusting, really. and no i dont want to be like that at all...

sorry to rant! but its makes me so mad the way people measure success these days

This is so true and to the point. It makes go hmmm when I see some of these people sometimes.

Funny you should ask this question! Thank you! Actually, we live in huntington, which I love - ALL of our friends there are, yes - from LI, and down to earth, as you pointed out. We love them dearly. however, they are younger, single, and most are artists and musicians... We have careers, and obviously are getting married, so I can't relate to them in all areas of my life....

The get together I was at - believe it or not - was at a yoga studio grand opening that FH will be teaching classes at... SO - my natural understanding was - wow - there will be all these down to earth, wonderful people there. BOY - was I mistaken - I never saw such plastic people in my life. I think that disappoinment led me to this post...Also, my stepsister tries so hard to be a part of this lifestyle, and my stepsister who died also tried to be a part of this. They are/were both miserable... how sad for them.

I'm not sure if you read my other posts - I am not looking for more people like us at all - that would be annpying! I have my friends I love dearly. If you read my posts, I lived in Vemront, and there were plasticy peolpe there too - and, of course - people who were down to earth that I surrounded myself with. I have a lot of people in my circle - plus, I am happy being alone too - one of those roll with the punches kind of gal. And I'm not judging anyone, which people I think mistook me for doing, which is understandable because hey, its a chat room, and no one can hear my inflections or see my face, and these things happen....

I'm not leaving to get away from LI. If that were the case, I never would have come to LI in the 1st place. We are leaving because reality is telling us that there is no way we will be able to afford any more family here. Plain and simple. Its a tough decisions that we are doing our best to delay because that would mean separating FH from his children, which I don't want to happen. I don't want to separate myself from some of my family as well. But, such is life.

Ladies - I'm wondering from these posts if maybe I'm STILL not being clear in what I'm asking, and maybe I confused you or misled you in some way? I feel that the point got lost, or maybe you aren't reading my multiple responses consistently addressing this over and over again... Please - scroll up, and read what I wrote. Chances are, you weren't at this GTG, and I'm not referring to any of you guys! OPlease don't take this stuff so personally - be comfortable with yourselves, and be happy with yourselves! Love yourselves!

Have a happy and postive view of the world, as I do and love so many poeople that I meet... Be kind to yourselves and to each other! (Woops - is that from Jerry Springer??)

love to ALL my fellow LI-ladies!!!
