Photographer captures the day differently, IMO. Seeing it on video is an entirely different experience so I think that videographer is very important as well, but that's just my opinion also. I know for budget reasons, some choose not to.

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
We had DH's cousin tape the ceremony and the beginning of the reception. Then during the reception my SIL went around to the tables (briefly) and filmed some of the dancing-cake cutting, etc. We are very, very happy with the results (I've watched it like 3 times) and even happier with the price - Free!

We aren't having one, we're going to have someone tape the ceremony but, like someone posted above, I've been at a number of weddings where they have seen obtrusive.
We get our pics on dvd set to music. I have watched my friend's and they are great.
I, too, have been to weddings and found the videographer to be rather intrusive..especially if nothing is going on and they deem it their right to 'interview/interrogate' guests...yes, this happened to us...so that's another reason to skip it...but i mean, if i can get it taped for free, why pay some guy to be in the way??
Reading posts like this totally makes me soooo HAPPY to have had amazing videographer! He was awesome...same company as photography, which IMHO is so much better than hiring another co to do it too. They work so much better together. We had a two photographers, one videographer and each had one asst. I never felt they were obtrusive at all. If anything we forgot they were there.
I was in a wedding where the videographer was obtrusive....constantly sticking the camera & light in our face...not to mention the microphone. Totally obnoxious...thanking God it wasn't our wedding.
FS - Love you!

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
At first we weren't going to get one, but my mom convinced us that we should. Now that we are close to the wedding I am really glad we decided to. Everything has been happening so fast, I can't even imagine how fast the wedding day will go. Pictures are great, but can't capture things the same way video can. I know from talking to other brides who have used my videographer say he is totally unobtrusive, they don't even realize he is there. As for the interview thing, we made it clear we do not want that at all. I wouldn't want to ask a friend or family member to record things for us because then they would be robbed of having a good time because they would be too concerned with filming things. All this is my opinion and you are of course free to do what you wish, but I know one of the regrets that is always stated over and over again is not getting video.

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
We got one for ours and we were really happy that we did, because we got to see a lot of things that happened that we didn't see at the wedding. Even the ceremony itself was worth it.
If you're not getting one just because you're afraid that they're going to be obstrusive, there are plenty of excellent videographers that are unobstrusive and not obnoxious. Ours was unobstrusive and was never in anyone's face, so it was perfect.

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
I wouldn't even think about skipping video. We still watch my brothers and sisters wedding video on special occasions when the family gets together.
they married in 1989-1996..and we still watch them, it's nice to see people who are no longer with us dancing and having a good time. don't forget our parents won't always be here. I lost my mom, and love to watch her in my sister's video giving her speech, etc.

As of right now, we are not getting one. Although I think I now want one for the ceremony only. I just can't see spending $500+ for someone to come out for less than an hour!!!! Ugh!! It always goes back to $$$$$$ with me!!!

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
We didn't get one and I don't regret it.
We spent a little more on photos though, since I am a huge photo person and wanted beautiful photos.
Everyone kept telling me that I had to have one, my cousin told me that it was the best thing she ever did b/c our grandparents (who are now deceased) are on it. But you know what? For every person who says you can't live without a video, there is someone who says they only watched their once!
There was only one thing I wished that we had a videographer for: my SIL who is 12 did a round off back handspring in her bridesmaid's gown, but the photographer caught it too!

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
we didn't get a pro video person, but we had one of my BMs dads tape it for us- he has a great digital video camera and was able to put it all on DVD for us- we lucked out caues hes not a drinker or dancer, so it kinda gave him something to do. i would definitely at least have a friend or somebody do it for you, because you're in a total fog the whole day, and at the end its like ' did we really just get married??' so its really nice to have to video and hear exactly what the minister said during the ceremony, exactly what the best man said in his speech, etc... because you won't remember much of it maybe even buy camcorder and have somebody use it to tape the wedding, and then you'll have a camcorder for vacations and things after the wedding....

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
It totally depends on what you want. You shouldn't feel like you have to get one because everyone else says you do.
We didn't get one and I don't regret it at all. And I must admit, everyone was shocked at that decison and tried to make us feel like we would be missing out if we didn't. We were much more concerned with photography so in the end we decided not to. I think I would have watched it once or twice and then never again. I've never looked at someone else's wedding video and thought 'oh, I really wished we would have done that'
I also happen to be very self-critical and would probably pick out all the wrong/annoying things I was doing at the wedding. I'm the type of person who cringes at hearing my own voice. But I felt, with pictures, only the beautiful moments were captured!
So in the end, it's whatever you're comfortable with.

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
We arent having one, I would rather spend money on pics. Everyone tells me I am crazy. I have lots of family members who will video the important parts and thats all I want. I like to remember things in pics not in video, but thats just me...

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
We are not getting video either.
We got a nice package for the pictures, but that's all we want.
The memories are more important to us and we know we wouldn't watch it.
I asked a similar question when we were deciding, but this is what we want to do... I think video is a new thing that brides are doing, and wasn't always done or viewed as a necessity

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
As one of the most important days of my life, I wanted to capture as much of it as possible, especially since I knew it would go by so quickly. As much as you may try to take a step back and enjoy the moment, your wedding really flies by and you don't remember half of it. I'm so glad we can look back at both the video and photographs. I love watching our video. It brings back the emotions of the day, something that the pictures don't really do.
Even if you don't hire a videographer, I'd at least get someone to capture the ceremony if possible.

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
I'm not getting one. We just don't have any budget remaining for one. Plus we aren't really video people - I am a HUGE photo person though (so we went with a extra large photo package).
To each her own, right?

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
I can't even tell you how many times I've watched my video and I didn't think I would be someone to watch it again and again. I just think pictures are nice, but a video is so amazing when you think about. When you have kids, you can show them, when family members pass on you can revisit them, etc. I think it's a totally personal decision, but it was one of the best things we got.

Re: Anyone skipping videography?
I would regret it if we were NOT having one- there are people on that video that wont be around forever and I would love to look back and see them there...happy ...and show my children...I will watch it ...but even if I were a person who would not watch it frequently...just those cherished moments that CAN NEVER be relived will be there... If it is in your budget and some are not all that much $$$, I would do it!

I'm skipping, and I really don't feel bad about it at all. I will always have my memories and some pics.
