Are you rude?

Original post by Espo22

I saw this on Oprah and thought it was pretty interesting, they said that most people now find there are so many rude people out there. 80% said this but 99% of those people said its not them

they also interviewed a store clerk and was so upsetting to hear how customers treated her, also waiters too and hearing what people do to them

Here are the questions that were asked to the studio audience to see if you are rude. At first i said oh i make sure i am not rude but was surprised by some things

Are you chronically late? i have to say i have a bad habit of being late

Have you ever typed an email while talking on the phone? i have done this

Have you ever interrupted a face to face conversation to take an unimportant phone call? I hate cell phones and hate when this is done, cant remember if i have done this but i usually have people tell me 'just pick up the phone' bc many times i dont. Usually if i pick up its for a reason

Have you ever gone through the supermarket express lane with more than 10 items? this is a pet peeve of mine and HATE when this is done

Have you let your dog relieve himself on a neighbors lawn? i have no dog

Have you ever stolen someones parking spot? NO i hate this too

Have you ever gossiped? yes

Have you ever taken someones food or drink from office refrigerator? NO

and here are some other things people said that they thought was rude and many people do

People texting while hanging out with you and having a conversation

not washing hands after using the bathroom

Talking on the cell phone when going up to a cashier, security at airport, while waiter is taking your order, or anything similar to this

Interrupting while someone is talking

chewing gum with mouth open

i dont push people out of the way. Like on a train I HAAAAAATE more than anything when theres a line of us standing and waiting to get on and have been there for a while and somebody comes out of nowhere and tries to cut us all and go in first.

Oh my gosh I HATE that! I'm gonna end up being REAL rude to someone one day when they do that and I put my shoe up their butt!

oh i have argued with SOOO many people who have done this, and if they cut me personally then i say to them straight out 'OH NO I DONT THINK SO' and put my hands in front of them and push myself in front of them and say i was first and not to be an a**hole. One lady got mad when i did this and pushed me while i was walking onto the train my reaction was to elbow her and i flipped out on her. Whenever i take trains i end up getting so upset and argued with people ALOT

HAHA That's right! Don't take that c r a p! Unfortunately I work in the city and have to deal with this morning and night - at least I'm not on the subway anymore. I swear people are animals - I used to basically get airlifted into the train Like you I'm tiny - only 5' - so it's like I wasn't even there for people to mind :-P

I also am getting so sick and tired of people with their phones, sorry to say. But I hate when I am talking to someone and they are texting and my dh does this and drives me nuts. THen they say 'go ahead i can hear you'

or they always have to have their phones in their hands doing something. people have become too obsessed, even when they dont have to text someone, call someone its like they dont know what to do and play with their phone just to do something

Same here, luckily FH doesn't obsess with his phones like some people do.

We know a couple who have sidekicks, and all they do whenever they hang out with us is go on their phones!!! It's like 'seriously, you don't have to come here and be with us if you don't want to'

I hate thatttttttttttt

So I've come the conclusion, WE are not inherentely rude - we are absorbing the rudeness by being near these ANIMALS! We cannot take blame for that!

Okay. I haven't done most of these things, but I have typed an email while on the phone, and I gossip, although I try not to.

It may seem like I'm trying to say I'm not rude, and that's not the case.

What I DO do is act subhumanly to customer service reps on the phone. God forbid I have to call either a utility, health insurance company, or something like that, and I turn into a completely insane and cruel non-person with no feelings. In addition, my worst personal moment was encountering a meterman giving me a ticket. I can't even repeat what I said about his mother.

Finally, I got my car towed once, (parking in a non-spot), and the mannish lady behind the bulletproof glass at the counter was going too slow for my taste. So of course I thought she was being intentionally rude- I don't remember if she was or wasn't, because I've blocked out the incident. So then I yelled to her, when she was done and as loud as I could 'THANK YOU, SIR'. She looked crushed, and I feel horrible about it to this day.

I'm so ashamed of the above two incidents, I considered posting under an assumed name, but I'm considering it as sort of a confession. At times, I blow.

yeah see thats the thing with me. I always try to be nice and not be rude to people, but once i think someone is rude i flip out depending on the situation. And at least you have 2 incidents, i have lost count and can name numerous times i have flipped out on people BUT they were rude or did something wrong first so i dont consider me being rude but simply letting someone know how rude or mean they were, some people need that sometimes I feel. They go pushing people around all the time and continue to do it bc people allow them to, once in a while they need a dose of reality

I will admit that he checks his phone often for sports scores, but that is only like when we are out at the ball game and he wants to check how his fantasy team is doing. HE never does it often other than that.

We both have the same phone plan, and we actually took the lowest minutes possible lol We hardly call anyone, and people hardly call us. I HATE talking on the phone, and so does he. But we like to text, but not when we are around other people. When we are bored.

Unfortunately, I don't need to answer these questions to know that I AM rude. I've been told on many occassion that I am rude. I'm a habitual texter, I hate talkting to people, I have a really bad habit of rolling my eyes at people subconsciously, I'm very sarcastic, I'm a gossiper (def NOT a girl's girl), I'll walk right into people if they're in my field of vision in a busy place i.e. a mall.

It's something I should try and work on.

FH does this sometimes and I yell at him but like:
-parking in a no parking zone
-at school people park blocking other cars in that are actually parked in stalls
-drive on the side of the road, like the grass to get through traffic
-double park
-honk when you are the first car and not making a right on red when it does say NO RIGHT ON RED

Oh and I hate it when people on their bikes ride against traffic and in the freaking road! I almost hit some guy the other day because he was riding in the road on a one lane road near my work and i went around him and as i did that he decided he wanted to turn down the block he just passed so literally came out in front of my car HELLO?!?! There is a side walk for a reason

those bikes get me nervous too and drive me crazy.

oh god i have a bad story about double parking. We went to the hospice to see DH's grandmother, so already you know we're not in the greatest mood. We were also going to drop his parents off so they were with us. We get there and there is a small cable company car blocking us. We go to both buildings on both sides of us and ask if theres a cable person inside bc they are blocking us. One building they said yes and the doorman calls the apt they are in and tells the cable guy. We wait and wait and wait, about 30 mins or more after he comes down. Dh's dad had to get to work, and we just wanted to go home too. And no matter what they shouldn't have done that. The doorman called him NUMEROUS times. HE came down with such an attitude and my dh flipped out, they got into an arguement. The cable guy actually turned to us and said 'did you expect me to stop what i was doing to come downstairs' YES when you double parked your car then you should, bc YOURE NOT SUPPOSED TO DOUBLE PARK!!!!!! i was so upset and looking for a cop to come tow the car, i wish we would've. No he shouldnt come down but he expects us to sit there for 30-40 mins waiting for him to finish his job like it has anything to do with us. Thank god dh's parents were there and his dad was there to calm him down bc if it was just us two it would've turned out bad. The cable guy was also young and was a punk

Re: Are you rude?

Okay, ESPO, I have gotten into more fights on the LIRR and the subway than I can count. Once I actually punched a man in the face for spitting sunflower seeds on the floor.

I mean, he was standing with his back to the door, eating seeds, and spitting them on the floor right in front of the door. So everyone who got off had to walk through his spitty mess. I asked him what the F he was doing. I said, I have to take this train every day. Do you really think it's proper to spit your seeds on the ground?

So he spit a seed at me.

I didn't even think about it. Before I knew what was happenning, I punched him in the face. His head swung back and hit the bar by the door, so I kind of got a two-fer. I hit him, then his head hit the metal bar.

Like a complete imbecile, I got off the train and started screaming for him to get off. I think about it now, and thank god he didn't hit me back, because he would have killed me. I just was so mad I couldn't see.

Another time, I got into the train and it was mobbed. I had my ipod on. I walked into the corner by the subway door, and people piled in. I could NOT have moved another inch. This lady turns around and starts yelling in my face with the meanest look, but I couldn't hear her. I took off my headphones and asked her nicely (not to be nice, but because it pisses people off, and I KNEW she said something mean) if she thought she wanted to repeat what she said.

She said 'I SAID MOVE YOUR FAT *** IN'. Now, I may be on the chub side, but I was standing so far out of everyone's way that she clearly was just one of those people who wanted to be mean to someone they didn't think would have the balls to respond.

I went off, but in a contained, insane person way. I said 'I'm not going to bother all of these people. But I'm going to wait on the train until you get off, and when you do, I'm going to kill you.' She kept pushing me- literally pushing me. I did nothing. I just looked at her and smiled. Then I held onto the post and she punched my hand. This was the best- she dropped her purse, and her cell phone dropped out, which I kicked across the crowded subway. She looked like a fool trying to find it.

Now she started to look scared, because I was laughing like a crazy person. I saw her start to move around Grand Central, so I got out first and stood at the foot of the stairs and waited for her. I walked up the stairs next to her, and she put a hand on me to sort of push me away, so I started pushing her back. She said 'Can't you get over it?'

That's what killed me. SHE starts in on a complete stranger, and then when SHE's realizing she made a stupid move, I'M supposed to get over it???

I followed her all the way up to the street. At this point, she's hysterical crying and runs up to some cops. I follow her, and she's saying I threatened her. I laughed calmly, and said I was just trying to go to work. The cops had better things to do, so I followed her to the corner and said 'The minute we're out of sight of those cops, I'm going to rip your face off.'

She started screaming, ran back to the cops, and they walked her to work.

Two days later, I saw her at the subway stop.

I went up behind her and whispered in her ear very softly, 'I'm right behind you.'

She started screaming and ran up the stairs.

Now, I don't think I would have touched this girl. But I was so incredulous at her behavior, I couldn't believe it. She was cruel to a complete stranger for no reason at all. I was completely out of her way. I truly hope I taught her a lesson, though of course, it's not my place to teach anyone a lesson. I'm no saint.

But man, did it feel awesome.

SOme people do need to be told that what they did was just wrong. I cant believe the way some people act. You dont tell someone 'Move your fat A**' that is just wrong.

People who spit/ hock lugies on on the street- rude and discusting . i STARE at them

Honking the horn the SECOND the light turns green- chill bro , let me get my foot off the break on the gas

People who do NOT cover their mouth when they cough - RUDE AND GROSS , i STARE at people who do that

not saying please and thank you when you are a customer OR an employee. It is so rude that people have NO manners anymore. sometimes ill say to an employee who was supposed to say thank you - ' thank you, your welcome, have a nice day you too ' and walk away. AND if someone doesn't say thank you when i hold a door for them I always say YOUR WELCOME all loud.

i hate people. I always say hello, goodbye , please , thank you , have a nice day to EVERYONE, from the janitors in my building to my boss , everyone get treated the same.

After reading this, I think I need further therapy.

And Mrs. Espo, those are just my two most shameful incidents. I don't count ANY train incidents, because I think they are in a class of their own.

As my uncle says, 'riding that iron horse will kill us all one day. Turns good people bad.'

I use that as my defense- anything that happens on the train, is because of the train.

I hope God is so forgiving.

When I was in third grade my mom went to a parent teacher conference and the teacher said, Melissa is always a nice girl but when she thinks I assign to many things to do she rolls her eyes. I guess the rudeness may have started when I was young. I definitely am making a conscious decision to be less rude.

i have a 30 second rule with the green light, ill give people a few seconds to realize it is green after that i will honk hahaha. And if someone is not going when they are supposed to i will honk. Such as being at a huge intersection and waiting forever and then when you can finally make the left and no cars are coming the person is just still not making a move, i get annoyed bc people do this alot or they do it very slowly and then i get stuck at the red light. But i dont do it right away, i give them those few seconds to react

ugh i cant even thing of the lugie thing bc that is one that that really grosses me out

That has to be one of the funniest things I have heard in my entire lifetime.

Not only were you in a bad situation, but you actually did something about it, unlike most people.

I think when you told her you would rip her face off, I almost died a little lol
