ok, she mouthed off, but she didn't eat a candy bar in the station. The office saw her throw it out. So what was she arrested for? And he said 'if she stopped for the summons she wold not have been arrested'' a summons for what? she threw out the wrapper as asked.

She should not have mouthed off to the cop, but he should not have been harasing her.

And what's with the no cursing in the subways rule?

she mouthed off once and kept walking when called

she made her an example -- i'll bet the rule will be followed now

since when is mouthing off a crime? plus maybe she was serious, didn't he have something better to do? i think it was harassment to ask her for her id after he saw her finish it and throw the wrapper away. and whoever said it's dc someone is probably getting mugged (or shot) while he's harassing her couldn't be more right. they have some SERIOUS crime issues to take care of. leave the people in the metro alone.

Re: arrested... for eating candy!

there are some really good cops I know...
and through them, I have met some guys who I definitely would not want to see with a gun and a badge.. that being said...

if you choose to mouth off to a cop.. you choose to take a chance of going to jail..

it's better just to be polite.. and then go about your business.. it's that easy...

i kind of have to agree withthe men here today....
the no eating rule is ridiculou...but maybe it makes it cleaner, so who am i to judge?
but if you break the rules and mouth off to the cop - you need to be punished, and with a profession like that, the cop needed to be strict. he didn't know who she was, or what her history was....he had every right to do what he did.
maybe that's just me fear of authority figures though......i do whatever they tell me! so i rarely get in trouble

Oh please! Its DC- someone just got mugged with the time it took these guys to arrest this person. YOu know what- you chose to be a cop- there are some wise asses you will have to deal with - just like in every other profession. Just because you have a license to arrest someone doesn't mean you need to do it when your ego is a little bruised.

Man, if I could cut someone off everytime they mouthed off to me......... Sorry, I was in heaven for a moment.

Point is that you have to learn to deal with people and their attitudes. Police that abuse their power are just as bad as those that don't respect them IMO.

oh come off of it... I'm not saying cops are evil, but really- you see a professional woman eating a pay day and she gives you a little lip? And so what... I probably wouldn't have stopped either.... you work hard, you pay taxes, you eat a pay day- and they cuff you... very American.

i'm probably going to get in trouble for saying this, but i call it like i see it and it's only my opinion

I think that if the person happened to be a guy, you all wouldn't be so up in arms over it

actually- yes I would- it's just ridiculous- how much of our tax payers money did that little episode cost.. was it worth it? To prove a point that if you eat candy and sass you get in cuffs?

I think we should move to DC. There must be no crime or terrorist issues for the police to deal with. Must be teh safest place to live

I was just thinking the same thing...this must have been a slow day in DC

to prove a point that if you break the law and defy authority (as silly as the law may be), you get punished

to prove the point to WHO?

the police are NOT our parents.. as much as they and the government would like to think so..

Could have given her a ticket then.. that's punishment, right? But to detain her.. excessive.. and in my opinion makes the police look like insensitive a-holes.

look at it this way, she, nor anyone who read the article, will do it again

the point was received.

I think it makes the police look like they are doing their job, which is enforcing the law

Again I repeat, had it been a guy, you wouldn't be so bent out of shape

I agree with Sassy that a ticket should have been sufficent. She did not threaten him. She asked a sarcastic, but IMO a vaild question.

As far as if it had been a man not being ' so bent out of shape' over it. Yes, I would have. It is not right to arresst and detain anyone (male of female)for eating a candy bar and brusing your ego.

She intentionally ignored the cop when he called her over after she kept on walking... and chewing. (And the last time I checked... chewing - regardless if you have food in your possession or not - is still considered eating).

He called her over... she refused to comply... thats the equivalent of running from the cops. Expect to be cuffed if you do this.

Forget 'the cop could have had something better to do' BS. She was breaking the law. His job is to ENFORCE the law.

And in case you didnt read in the article... he is a TRANSIT cop. He job is to ONLY go after people in the train stations. He has no jurisdiction over the murdered and rapists on the streets.

And in case you need a lesson... the primary tickets and stoppages a Transit Cop does... are Quality of Life issues (like eating/smoking/etc), Fare Jumpers, Pickpockets, stuff like that. Its not like you see a murder and a rape every day on the trains. In fact its pretty rare next to the amount you see it elsewhere.

Get over it girls. She called his chump card... he showed it to her. Its cops like him why their train stations are so much better and cleaner than ours.

Your right. You don't get detained for eating a piece of candy (even though its illegal).

But you failed to mentioned that you DO get detained if you either ignore/walk away/or run from the cops.

Man, this is a good discussion! Just when I think I'm on the candy ladies side, I read someone else's perspective, and agree with the cop!

Re: arrested... for eating candy!

I just noticed that the cop's name is 'Polly'. I would assume thats a female name.

I thought all along it was a male cop. Damm... if it was a female cop there is REALLY NO WAY would have mouthed off. A male cop she maybe could have flirted her way out of it.

A man arresting a woman is one thing. But we all know how 'women don't always get along with women'. Arresting that woman probably made that female cop's week. Maybe even month.... sad to say.

Also makes this story even more amusing.

I can also picture the dinner discussion that evening at the female cop's house.

Female Cop: 'Yeah that dumb b*tch had the nerve to walk away from me when I called her a$$ over. You wouldn't believe the look on her face when I cuffed her'.
