I Live in DC right now...and yes this law is a little much...and yes she should have been given just a ticket, not cuffed etc...HOWEVER i do have to say that they really are sticklers about this rule.
I have been stopped more than once before going through the ticket gate beacuse i had food with me.
The police in the metro are (usually) METRO police...their job is simply to police the metro.
As i said, i agree that the rule is a little crazy, but the metro AND the metro stations ARE really clean. That is one thing that really surprised me when i moved here!!

Again, i re-iterate, I WOULD be bent out of shape if it was a man, and yes, you are eating when the food is in your mouth, but I think that the point is they don't want the food ending on the floor... so unless she was going to SPIT the pay day on the floor- suffice it to say, she was done.
In my opinion transit cops are really there to protect us from people like terrorists.... not the evils of gum.
by the way- I take the PATH and there is no eating on the PATH either and it is MUCH cleaner than the Subway or the LIRR believe it or not.
I actually want to edit this post to say that I am sort of distrubed that the men on this site automatically assuem that women don't get along with other women or are catty- that's pretty interesting- since most wars on this Earth are started and continued my men...

I gotta side with the guys here, the officer told her to finish eating 'before' she entered the station and she threw the wrapper in the garbage and stuck the candy in her mouth...does not mean she finished eating it. Then she mouthed off, then she ignored the cop. Like the boys said, the metro police are there to enforce the metro rules and she did not obey. She was wrong, she should have been punished and she was... I respect the police authority and I think that if they catch you doing something, you're 'it', they can't catch everyone, although sometimes I wish they could.

I LOVE cops like that. She got what she deserved. She presented the cop her bluff card and he called on it. She mouthed off to him not once... but TWICE.
Stories like this absolutely make my day. And for those who say they hate cops like this... look at it from the cop's point of view. He lets this woman do her thing... what does that say of him? Says he is a wus IMO and doesn't know how to enforce the law.
Its funny too cause I am actually on the train returning to NY from Washington. I didn't take the Metro while I was down there so I couldn't tell ya if people were eating there or not.

i think it has more to do with that some women cops feel they have something to prove, and try too hard to be badasses. i would pick male cop, not because women don't get along, but we all know what powerful force really drives men.....
