What's the going rate for giving money as a gift. I'm going to Westbury CC in a couple of weeks and not sure what to give!!! Don't want to be cheap, but groom is a co-worker of my FH.

Re: $$$ as a Gift
$200/couple is what we give to someone who's a friend but we're not in the wedding party.

yep, i usually figure about 125 pp - now that i'm planning my own wedding I understand how much it really is to 'cover my plate'!

I usually give $250 no matter who..... Close friends I give $300....
I just fell that giving 200 is probably not covering two plates....

We give $250 as a staple. - $300 if it is a close friend or family member.

I think the rule should be that you give what you can. Some people can give more and some can't.

Re: $$$ as a Gift
I agree with Blu-ize...I'd love to give $250 for every wedding I go to, but most of the time that isn't the case. I think anything above $150 is fair.

Re: $$$ as a Gift
I usually try to find out how much a plate is and cover that at least. Usually anywhere from $200 to $400 (close friend/family). We had a lot of weddings this summer that required us to get a hotel room so we gave $250 for those weddings...

Re: $$$ as a Gift
According to the wedding ettiquette stuff that I read (Emily Post i think) the whole 'pay for your plate' thing is bull. You give what you can. We've given between $100 - $200 as a couple depedning on how close we are to them. We would like to give more sometimes, but nobody who is your friend should want you to give more than you can afford.
Think this way, If someone can give you a $50 gift off your regestry, and that's ok...why isn't it ok to give $100 instead of $200?
JMO
...and the bridal party...ironically, even though they are your closeset friends, are already paying like $1000 after everything else adds up...my friends would all have to be lawyers and Doctors to afford some of the 'expected' gift $$$, instead they are teachers and artist...and some unemployed. It's all relative I say.

Re: $$$ as a Gift
We went to FH cousin's wedding in July and we gave $300 or $150 per person.
But I probably wouldn't give less than $100. Also, I don't ecpect the bridal party to ive anything since they already have to pay for their dresses, shoes, hairs, bridal shower, etc...
I also don't like the 'pay for your plate' idea. I mean, our plates are $54 per person. Some people spend $300 per person. I mean, that seems like a ridiculous way to judge what you should give.

I agree! I think finding out what they're paying and basing your gift on that is possibly the tackiest thing I have EVER heard of. The people who are paying less for their plates are more than likely the ones who need the money more. Your gift should depend on how close you are to the person and how much you can afford to give. Any other way is just beyond tacky.

Re: $$$ as a Gift
We usually give $250....for very close friends (if one of us is in the wedding party), we'll give between $275 - $300. It is ironic that when your in the bridal party you give more....even tho you have already ponied up so much money for the shower, dress, shoes, etc....
