One of the bands that FH and I are interested in take a 15 minute break when the main course is served, and besides that they take a 10 minute break every hour. They did indicate that they could have the keyboardist or guitarist play background music during the breaks so that there is not a break in live continuous music. Does this seem like a lot of breaks? How do I ask the band to take less breaks???? TIA!

It does seem like a lot. If you add that up, for a 5 hour reception they are only really playing for about 4 hours. I personally wouldn't like to have all that dead-air during the wedding. Are they going to charge you to have the keyboardist play during the breaks? I would find that out first.

I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't charge for the keyboardist/guitarist because they told me we could either have an ipod playing OR the keyboardist/guitarist playing. I want to ask them to not take any breaks but I just don't know how to say it. I would even be willing to pay $100-200 more if they weren't willing to throw it in.

I could maybe understand taking breaks during the different courses because no one is really up and dancing during that time or paying attention to the music - they just want to eat. Maybe ask them to try and not take breaks during the real dance-floor time?

I know they usually break during dinner so that can eat too- but 10 minutes every hour is a lot of time not playing. Are all band's like that? I would definitly say something to them- thats a whole hour you will be paying them and they wont be playing!

The more I think about it the more the break every hour seems ridiculous to me!! When i work it's a 9 hour day and I get 1 lunch break! I don't get a break every hour!
Are you really that adament about this band? Why not just go for another band?
They seem lazy with all these breaks. I'd be scared of them. haha! Maybe I'm overreacting! But that's like swindling at least an hour of pay for no work out of you.

Exactly! I hope they aren't expecting to get paid for for 5 hours... and if so I'd start looking elsewhere

Thats horrible! There are so many bands out there that are amazing and do not take any breaks! Not even for dinner! My band did tell me that during dinner they take a 5 min break in shifts to use the bathroom. Which sounds acceptable to me. 10 min breaks hourly is not.

I spoke to my band about that we were at a wedding where the band took multiple long breaks and mine assured me that most of the band would only take 1 short 15 minute break while one guitarist remained playing and then he took his soon after....I think that it something you should definitely be able to negotiate on.

I would definately talk to them about it. Obviously you are uncomfortable with the idea. It's your wedding and you are paying these people to do a job, you should express your concerns to them. If you feel uncomfortable talking to them about it ask your fiance to do it.
Just don't be afraid to tell them what you want.

THEY NEED A BREAK EVERY HR?????? WHEN YOU GO TO WORK DO YOU BREAK FOR 10 MIN. EVERY HR? MY WORK IS VERY DEMANDING AND IF I GET TO BREAK FOR LUNCH DURING MY REG. 8 HRS I M HAPPY. THEY ARE A BAND, NOT THE PLUMBERS UNION. THEY ARE MAKING MONEY DOING WHAT THEY LOVE.
