What is the difference between Black Tie versus Black Tie optional. Is black tie optional a tux or dark suit and Black tie just tuxedo?

To me.
Black Tie is wear a tux
Black tie optional is I want you to wear a tux.
In my opinion both are kinda rude. Sorry!

we wrote black tie preferred --i don't think it is rude at all! you are telling people that it is a formal affair and to dress appropriately...

But people already know its a FORMAL AFFAIR. Black Tie mean go rent a tux and give me a gift or don't come.

IMO, asking people to rent/buy a tux for your wedding is a lot to ask. they're probably buying a new suit or dress or accessories to begin with in addition to giving you a gift (and perhaps a shower gift as well).

You got it! Atleast that's the way I look at it. When I see 'back tie optional' I get a little bit more dressed up than if I don't see it. I dont think it means, I want you to wear a tux, it just means, I want a formal affair. If I don't see 'black tie' or 'black tie optional' I tend not to wear my most formal attire. That's just me.

no actually --some people don't know it is a formal affair --i went to a wedding this weekend where some women showed up in very casual summer dresses and men were wearing khaki's and button down shirts.
to each his own!

Re: Black tie vs. Black tie optional
i put 'black tie welcome,' meaning if you have a tux, you can wear it and won't feel out of place. i'm figuring the majority of men at my wedding will probably just wear a dark suit and that's fine with me.

Re: Black tie vs. Black tie optional
Honestly I put black tie optional not for the men but for the women I have been to some affairs where women are wearing the most inappropriate things and I think that is rude. Honestly men know that they have to wear a suit they really don't need any help but for some reason women need the help. JMO

Re: Black tie vs. Black tie optional
i don't think it's rude either. black tie or black tie optional tells the formality of the event. not all weddings are formal to the point that a tux (or an evening gown for the lady) is expected.

I used to think it was rude, but I have to be honest, put ONE OF THEM because the things that people were wearing at my sister's wedding were atrocious. I don't know why people don't think they need to get dressed up for a wedding

Well now that I think about it someone wore Kakis to my Saturday Night wedding. It didn't bother me cause I just remembered. I don't know I guess now that I am married I guess I realize there are worse things that could happen then someone wearing kakis to a wedding. After all it has nothing to do with you.

yes, there are worse things in life than someone wearing KHAKIS to a wedding --but again to each his own - i don't think it is up to you to pass judgement...

I never really thought about the whole black tie thing until I went to a wedding years ago and overheard one of the guest complaining about it. he said he took the tux rental fee out of the amount he was going give as a gift.

Groomsmom...I doubt when you posted your question you had any ill intentions of causing some major drama....but if I were you I'd search this topic and delete the post. Save yourself, and the rest of us, from the horrible drama that surrounds this topic. Nobody will ever agree.

To simply Answer the Question:
Black Tie - Wear a Tux or Gown, this is an extremely formal affair Black Tie Optional/Preferred - The Hosts are trying to politely communicate the fact that this is a Formal Affair. - A Tuxedo or Dark Suit is appropriate. - At least that's how I would take it. -
