Can I vent????

Can I vent????

I recently graduated St. John's...with honors, and I have ten years working experience prior to going back to school.

Now I am having a really hard time getting a job. I want to do something in media planning or buying, and there is ton of industry software that we NEVER even discussed in school (makes me wonder why I paid $24,000 a year!), and I was not eligible to do an internship b/c I always had a full schedule, even in the summer.

I feel like I will never be able to get my foot in the door b/c I have no experience in this particular field. I even tried to get my foot in the door as a receptionist/AA at a media planning firm, but was told that I did not meet the qualifications

I think I just need to go back to bartending until I graduate Law School..... poor DH... he thought those days were over.

Thank for letting me vent

Re: Can I vent????

Can I just tell you that I know how you feel!! I got my masters in school counseling in 2002 from Hofstra (not cheap either), I did a 200-hour internship and then a 3-week leave replacement in the same school after I graduated. I sent an insane amount of resumes and went on interviews for two years but never got anything. I was fortunate in that I already had an established career as a fundraiser but some of my peers are working retail with a friggin $21,000 masters degree!!! I made a very tough decision this spring to give up my search and pursue the fundraising out of sheer frustration, not to mention the toll it was taking on my self-esteem. It was always helpful to me that alot of my classmates were in the same boat.

HANG IN THERE!!! You're not alone!

Re: Can I vent????

I agree its hard....I have not finished school due to working f/t and not being able to afford it..I'm going for my masters in Psych...

I have seen jobs listed for things requiring a 4 yr degree that pay almost half of what I make now after 3 years in friggen Customer service...makes me scared to ever leave my job...

I've seen college degree must jobs in Manhattan for like $30,000.....who could live on that after graduating COLLEGE?

Im venting along with you...but hang in there...everything happens for a reason, you;ll make it!

Re: Can I vent????

Thank you all.......I though I was the only one. DH thinks I am crazy being on the internet every day & night & sending out HUNDREDS of resumes....

I cannot imagine that in this day & ge, someone with a master is working in retail making pennies compared to maybe 10 years ago when a Master's Degree gave you Carte Blanche

Re: Can I vent????

The company I work for supplies software to ad agencies/advertisers/broadcasters.

Have you tried Mediapost? Advertising Age?

I am sure there is a way you can get into an ad agency to do something but the bad thing is they dont pay that well to start out which I am sure you already know.

Chin up though. I know its easier said than done which is why I wont go back to school. I am already going to be in debt with my undergrad degree til Im over 40!

FM if you want any additional info on anything!

Re: Can I vent????

You can send me your resume and I can pass it on ... I work a advertising sales (radio & TV) firm ...

As HBRadio said, they do not pay sales assistants well but it might be something...

Re: Can I vent????

It is frustrating....Did you already start law school? What year? My brother is making a ton of $ during his law school summer internships, so at least that will help. Definitely 99.9% of work stuff isn't learned in college...Just need that degree to put on the resume....Is the St John's career center of any help? I know alums from my college were really helpful in terms of networking.

I feel like I wrote this --- verbatim. I left my job as Annual Giving/Giving Society Director at a nonprofit in NYC to get my masters. I graduated with a 4.0 and there's nothing out there. I think I'm going to go back into my old field as well. For a while I was teaching pre-k but going from $75,000/yr to $7 an hour is killing my self esteem too. So .... you're definitely not alone.

Um, try human service jobs that require a masters and pay $7 - $9 an hour! Life's not fair.
