Catholic Brides -- are you doing a full mass? Should I just...

Original post by JimmysBride

I was originally set on a full mass... FH would LOVE to just do a ceremony. This weekend I mentioned it to my mom and I thought she would have a heart attack if I didn't have a full mass but MUCH to my surprise, she was all for the shorter ceremony!! So of course now FH is really pushing for it.... It makes practical sense because it gives us more time for travel, pics, and the receiving line which is all tight right now.

Should I just do the shorter ceremony? If you are doing the full mass, why did you choose that over the shorter ceremony?

I know I wanted the full mass because I think it would be more meaningful that way. FH says it's anti-climactic because there's this whole build up to the wedding part, the bride coming in etc, and then it's like 'let us pray'... rather than 'Do you take...'

What is included if I just do the ceremony? I know communion is out...

It wouldn't bother me THAT much to give up the full mass but I know it would ease FH's nerves immensely and make him happier... what do you thinK?

We wanted a ceremony but my DH's uncle is a priest and he performed our mass! He decided he would not perform 'just a mass' (his words, not mine!!) This created such a controversy right before my wedding, I was ready to elope! I gave in and had the mass. We were going to be pressed for time that is why I didn't the full mass. The priest decided to cut out some readings so he could squeeze in communion and still be out on time.

I didn't feel that because I only wanted a ceremony that it was not going to be meaningful.

Sorry for my venting, this is still a sore subject with me.

We origanally wanted to do just a ceremony, the priest told us it was a time difference of 15 mins, so we opted for the mass. I'm really glad we listened to him 'WE' felt it made our wedding more special to us

We are having the mass both because we want to and it will make members of our family very happy. Either way (mass or ceremony only) you are still vowing, in front of a priest, your friends and family, and God, to love and honor each other forever. As long as you are comfortable with your choice, it is the right choice for you. No one can or should tell you any different.

I'm doing the full mass...but I also gave myself a lot of time...mass starts at 2, I figure we wont leave there till 3: 30, with the pictures, and greetings...it'll take me an hour to get to crest hollow, and cocktail starts at 7, so i have enuff time...

That's basically what we are doing, especially since it's a sunday and mother's day, it's full mass, ceremony and a short mother's day blessing..our wedding falls on Mother's day next year

Our Mass will be at 3 or 3:30, and cocktail hour starts at 6:30

We are doing a full nuptial mass. Neither of us would have it any other way. It is the most important part of the day !!!

i also agree that it is a sacrament and you should have a full mass. you only do it once, so what's an extra 25 minutes?

As for both of us being fully Christians, we are having a mass. The extra time means nothing b/c it is the most important part of the day. By no means are we rushing to get out of the church..most importantly we are doing it b/c WE want to and in the eyes of God..

We are getting married in a Catholic church but are not doing a full mass because I am not Catholic. My FI wanted to get married in a Catholic church by his uncle who is a priest so that is why we are only having a ceremony. I would love to have gotten married in our hall, it would have been so much easier. But we can not be married by a priest outside of a church

I feel that it's important to have the nuptial mass. Besides it's probably 20 mins longer.

ETA: Important for me and FH that is. I do not mean to make it seem everyone needs to do the same.

If it is important to get married in church, why isn't it as important to have a mass? Is it not worth the time?

The extra 15 minutes for a nuptial mass does not add anything to the sacrament - having a nuptial mass is a personal decision...not a requirement.

Actually it does, to some degree, because the communion received at the mass symbolizes the first meal the couple share as husband and wife.

I accept that some people don't want full masses and that is their choice and they have their opinion.

I agree. FI and I are having a mass because it is important to us as well as our families. Call me selfish, but when it came to making this decision we solely based it on what was important to us, not our guests. Quite honestly almost ALL our guests are Catholic, so I doubt any of them will be complain about having to sit through the mass.

We all have our reasons for making the decisions we do. I commend any Catholic that feels strongly about having their sacrament performed in a church (ceremony or mass). Flame me if you want, but I don't agree w/ those raised Catholic (received all previous sacraments and plan to raise their children Catholic) to marry outside the church.
