I think this is the biggest argument between FH and I right now. No one in my family is really religious except for my 2 grandmas. In his family, they are no that religious either but some will receive communion. I barely go to church and FH goes every Sunday. I really do not want a full mass because I feel like I will be too uncomfortable. This is something he really wants. I don't know what to do!

I'm absolutely having a full mass. As a Catholic, I believe that marriage is one of the most important of the sacraments, and like First Communion and Confirmation I believe that it should be celebrated in conjunction with the Eucharist. It would feel odd to me to be IN church and not recieve communion. Maybe its just b/c I attend church every week, but I can't imagine not having a mass.
I absolutely agree! although i do not attend church every week it was very important to me to have a mass but it is also up to the individual - i don't think it's wrong not to have one-but for myself i just would prefere it

I didnt mean anyone in particular, I just meant people in general. A lot of people get married in church b/c they think they're 'supposed to' but they dont really care, they want to rush through it, etc.

Well then, I absolutely see your point. My favorite is when I hear of people shopping around for 'pretty' churches.

we are having a full mass so that the church goers can have a good time on sat nite and not have to worry about missing mass the next day. They may be holy but they want to party down and not go to church with a hangover. LOL

i totally 100% agree with you
I attend mass every Sunday and I am very religious and I always dreamed of a full mass. . .
However, FH does not attend mass and really doesn't practice even though he has all his sacraments.
So I was kind of forcing him into a full mass but finally he said that if we DID have a full mass he would just be 'going through the motions' and that REALLY hurt me. . . I didn't want to receive communion with all of these thoughts running through my head about how beautiful it was to share this sacrament on our wedding day and he is hoping that it is all over soon. . . does that make sense?
It stinks but - I can't force him to believe and I didn't want to have a mass that only meant something to one of us.

I agree, I can't imagine being at church and not receiving communion.
Honestly, I think thats the whole purpose of getting married in a church! That's the most important part of the day! If you just want to be in and out, don't use the Catholic church as a pit stop!! Its so much MORE than that.
I agree wholeheartedly. I hope it doesn't offend anyone but I just feel like if you feel the need to be married before the eyes of god then why skimp out and go the quickie route. Marriage is a sacrament and marriage is a big commitment so I believe the same commitment should be made to the sacrament ceremony. FH didn't want to do 7 week pre-cana because it would interfere with his hockey and softball and football. I told him that I have been going to church every week and that I am really taking my church and RCIA classes seriously and that the least he could do since he's not helping me with anything in this wedding is to take the preparation for the sacrament seriously and make a full commitment. If he can't commit to a small sacrifice how can we commit to love honor and cherish one another for THE REST OF OUR LIVES?

Re: Catholic Girls- Are you having a full mass?
Well at first my FH and I were not going to. But my parents and his mom had requested that we have a full mass and we thought about it more and thought we should. We felt it was right to have a mass...and the more I thought about it the more we all agree it was. But not everyone does. In my church the mass is only 10 mins longer than just a ceremony.

Re: Catholic Girls- Are you having a full mass?
We are not religious at all.........we have belifs that most people do not have.......but his parents are very very religious roman catholic people, i always imagined walking down an aisle and walking down the steps of a church. If we didnt get married in a church his parents would probobly disown him. So we are doing it. We are just doing a short cermony, not a full mass, We are agnostic, and will not sit thru a full mass, i have not been to church ecept for baptimisms and weddings since i made my confirmation. So we both get what we want...i want the effect of a church wedding, his parents want it in a church cause of their beliefs so we both win. Since its our wedding we r gonna do it our way.

Re: Catholic Girls- Are you having a full mass?
I am very mixed on this topic. My parents are very religious- they go to church every sunday. they put my brothers, sisters and i through catholic school our whole lives. and i as well as fh have all our sacraments. however fh converted in boot camp and his family is greek orthodox. now when i went to his brothers wedding his family didnt know what the hell to do and it was kinda embarrassing and fbil only had a mass because of his future wife (who deosnt go to church ). anyway.....fh and i are unsure what to do we originally were not going to have a mass because i dont want his family to feel awkward. but my parents are mad about that.
Now onto our feelings...i dont really know why fh converted i think he did it in boot camp with some influence. but myself yes i used to go to church every sunday and went to catholic school my whole life. but i have mixed feelings about the catholic religion. and my parents dont like that but i say what i feel. and i dont think the church and the CATHOLIC sacrament of marriage is the one and only. i mean according to some other religion marriage is different or according to people who dont believe in a religion they dont see htey arent married unless in the eyes of a god in a church and with the Eucharist. i am still catholic, but do not go to church all the time. and like i said it is because i have some differnt feelings about my religion but i stillthink i have the right to get married in a church with a mass or without if i want one. but that is just my opinion. so as of now i dont know what i am doing

It wasn't a big deal to me either way. I goto church every week, FH does not. He actually felt that we should and I was completely ok with it. I feel it is more ceremonious

YES... we are. To us, the ceremony is very important. We go to mass each week- and I think our friends and family can tolerate 1 hour dedicated to us, our love for each other as we enter the sacrement of marriage!

Re: Catholic Girls- Are you having a full mass?
We are having a full Mass. I wanted a full mass but my FH is Lutheran Baptist so we didn't think that we could so I was ok with just a ceremony in a Catholic Church. We agreed we would raise our future children Catholic and that was important to me. After attending a few other weddings FH decided that he really wanted a mass and decided to convert. He also felt that if he was going to raise his Children Catholic he should convert. After enrolling in RCIA we found out the both of us DO NOT need to be CAtholic in order to have a full mass -- the one who is Catholic needs to sign a form saying you will raise your CHildren Catholic.

I'm so glad to see that there are girls who take the religous aspect of the ceremony seriously! Thats one of my hugest peeves - people that use the church as a stopping off spot for a bit followed by a few photos, but then again I dont think that people who don't believe in Jesus Christ should be celebrating Christmas, but thats a whole other topic

We are getting married at the RH. I've discussed w/ FH possibly having a Roman Catholic ceremony at Church but we decided against it since we are both divorced. I don't know if we would be allowed. I was never married in the Church. I eloped and had a civil ceremony. He married a non-Catholic and had a J of P also.

You could, b/c in the eyes of the church neither of you were ever married. My dad was married before at a J/P and was able to marry my mom in a catholic church w/out issue.

I am very serious about getting married, but I grew up in a family that is not religious at all. I went to church with my grandmother but my mother and father never went to church. I do not fully follow catholic teachings or any other religion.
FH and I are getting married in church because it is very important to him. Not sure about the mass because I am not comfortable in church. I feel anxious and nervous.

I can understand how you feel. It was very important to FH and his parents that we marry in a Catholic Church. I was raised in the church, but due to personal reasons stopped attending about 12yrs ago. I felt I was compromising by agreeing to the church ceremony. FH understood when I told him I did not want a mass. Since I am non practicing, I feel it would be hypocritical of me to take communion.
