I think this is the biggest argument between FH and I right now. No one in my family is really religious except for my 2 grandmas. In his family, they are no that religious either but some will receive communion. I barely go to church and FH goes every Sunday. I really do not want a full mass because I feel like I will be too uncomfortable. This is something he really wants. I don't know what to do!

Now I am one who said I have some confusion about my religion (Roman Catholic) I do care for my religion I just have confusions which are normal and acceptable to me atleast. I went to Church every Sunday and I went to Catholic school my whole life. I felt alot of the times I was forced to believe in the religion. I never felt that I could interpet things the way I saw them- for example the Bible. I remember telling my religion teacher one day what I felt a certain scripture meant. And he literally yelled at me saying I was wrong and I should re-evaluate what it meant and to write a paper on it. Yes that is not the Church's doing but it is still a Catholic preacher who speaks through God!!! Also, I am confused about not just politics I am confused with the sacraments and what is written in the Bible and what we are told to do. I mean yes sometimes the politics of the Church come into my head about my confusion but it isn't the only reason I am confused. So therefore I never said I was only confused because of just the politics. I am confused with God. But I guess since I had a brother die at such a young age and never got to see my grandparents and have been through a lot in my life where I asked for God's help and felt as if I was not receiving any (may just be because I wasn't receiving the answer I wanted) yes I have confusion with God at times. Also when Jesus preached to his followers he did not give them the Eucharist (yes that is because it is God's body and Jesus had to die for our sins in order for us to receive the body of Christ) but this leads to my believing of I do not feel I need to go to Church all the time to receive the Eucharist to feel close to God or to be forgiven my sins.
And yes I know I am a sinner. I have had sex before marriage and continue to do so. But I feel a person who preaches so much so about the Cahtolic religion and what is right would take their sins into consideration and not continue to commit that sin. I am not targeting this at anyone specifically because I know we have all had sex and continue to do so. But I think it is silly to say just because you arent having promiscous sex means God will forgive you. He WILL FORGIVE you even if you are promiscous if you want his forgiveness. Because God says having sex before marriage is sinning even if it is with one person and out of pure love.
IDK I just wanted to state my opinon as well but I do respect everyone elses. I guess I am just trying to justify my opinion which I shouldn't feel I need to. Everyone has their reasons for not wanting a mass or wanting a mass. And I do not feel that because a person chooses to have a mass just to please their parents is wrong nor do I see the people who are not ahving a mass but having a ceremony in the Church wrong. But I do see it weird and useless for people who have no religion to get married in a church just for it's scenary. I say each their own...and I give a lot of respect to all yuo who do go to Church and believe in your religion. I know religion is def therapy for some and for others a way of life and for others something that they believe in and cherish.
I guess what I am saying is I respect everyone's opinions but wanted to state mine. And I don't think anyone is wrong in believing what they believe in. Wouldn't the world be boring if everyone believed in the same thing??!!!
Just a point I wanted to make. As far as the Catholic Church is concerned you are not allowed to interpret the bible for yourself. This is why you have priests. Your are expected to either get your interpretations from the church or check with them before you make a decision.
I agree, the world would be boring if we were all the same!

Re: Catholic Girls- Are you having a full mass?
this may or may not be relavant.... but.... it kinda is...
i am jewish and FH is catholic, i am not a super jew.. however i do respect what my parents have tought me throughtout the years...
FH's family however, have gone to church his entire life, and he received all his sacraments...
his family before even thinking told rob to call the church so he can book the date for the wedding... they FORGOT i was jewish!
then they got REAL upset that their 'baby boy' was not havign a full mass, at a church.. and realized they were goign to have NO mass and NO church...
i will not convert, nor will FH ask me to do so.
like i said i respect what i was taught, and i want to give what i can to my children, as my parents have for me...
in addition my family woudl be hurt if i converted, expecially my parents.
we are having a cantor and a preist at the RH, and FH will be able to take his communion or something to that affect.... we will have bits from both religions, and thats all in all what makes us happy.

really? because in my RCIA class they actually ask us to interpret the bibles scriptures into simple terms and they ask us what we think the scripture means and how we can apply it in our daily life. when I give my own interpretation they love it and they never tell anyone they are wrong. not yet anyway

I think this is wonderful. I like that u are mixing both religions and staying true to each of your respective beliefs. then again ...Catholicism comes directly from judaism so its not far off...excccccept for that whole jesus thing.

actually that is true...i just mentioned this to my mom and she made a good point. after listening to the gospel and homily we are both going to walk away feeling different. because we do apply it to our everyday life and since our lives are different we mght have different interpretations!

lol yeah jesus got in the way ...
but it was difficult and it hurt his mom the most (similar to what tilde posted about her mom)it was tough for her... her oldest son was married there and just wanted here baby married there... it was tough. then she wanted a mass involved that the preist woudl be able to do but realized after FH talked to her... that its our wedding not hers.
thats somethign my mom had to learn also (maybe its a mom thing over their children... ) my mom wanted alot of reciting in hebrew, and that you can not tell my FH to do....
one thing that i have seen with the both of us from different religions is that religion as a WHOLE got in the 'way' of what could have made everyone happy. (ie a church, hebrew prayers) marrage is a compromise, and that is what has been done...

I don't know the first thing about catholocism, in fact, I don't even think I spelled it right, BUT clearly there are girls on this board that are more religious than others so they're going to have the ceremony that best suits them. I don't understand how a simple thread on someone asking who is having a full mass turned into this. No one should be told what kind of ceremony they should be having or be criticized for the one they are planning.

Sorry, don't want to offend. Maybe things have changed since I was younger, but that was how it used to be. Who knows, the church has been trying to update it's ways.
Up until very very recently i was a Catholic religious education teacher. Part of the Catholic faith is taking the bible in a literal sense. There is no room for interpretation. This is one of the reasons Catholics believe that the Eucharist IS Christ as opposed to Protestant religions that believe it is a representation of Christ.
When I taught classes, we were told to ask what people thought it meant. If it was 'correct' we let it end that way, if not, we'd 'correct the class' but not in an angry way. We'd also discuss how to take the lessons and use them in every day life.
I don't want to get involved with the debate going on in this thread, but wanted to say that the poster who said that there is no interpretting the Bible is technically correct if you go by Church 'law'

I agree, the world would be boring if we were all the same!
really? because in my RCIA class they actually ask us to interpret the bibles scriptures into simple terms and they ask us what we think the scripture means and how we can apply it in our daily life. when I give my own interpretation they love it and they never tell anyone they are wrong. not yet anyway
Thank you. I was starting to doubt my many years of catholic upbringing!

I don't know the first thing about catholicism, in fact, I don't even think I spelled it right, BUT clearly there are girls on this board that are more religious than others so they're going to have the ceremony that best suits them. I don't understand how a simple thread on someone asking who is having a full mass turned into this. No one should be told what kind of ceremony they should be having or be criticized for the one they are planning.
Well said! Yes you did spell it wrong, promise not to get upet at your for it
lol thank you, I'm usually such a good speller, I'm going to try and correct it

I'm absolutely having a full mass. As a Catholic, I believe that marriage is one of the most important of the sacraments, and like First Communion and Confirmation I believe that it should be celebrated in conjunction with the Eucharist. It would feel odd to me to be IN church and not recieve communion. Maybe its just b/c I attend church every week, but I can't imagine not having a mass.
I agree, I can't imagine being at church and not receiving communion.
Honestly, I think thats the whole purpose of getting married in a church! That's the most important part of the day! If you just want to be in and out, don't use the Catholic church as a pit stop!! Its so much MORE than that.
I am not using the Church as a pit stop! I have received all of my sacraments, attend mass regularly and went through Catholic school. My FH is not Catholic and so we are not able to have a full mass, and the last thing I would want to do is have him convert to Catholicism just for the sake of having a full mass, as I believe that decision should mean much more.
wait, you cant have a full mass if your fh is not catholic? Ugh i didnt know that, im not catholic but FH is, i wanted to have a full mass

Not sure about the mass part, but you can't take communion if you have not had the sacriment in the church. I would check with the priest and see what he says.
