I think this is the biggest argument between FH and I right now. No one in my family is really religious except for my 2 grandmas. In his family, they are no that religious either but some will receive communion. I barely go to church and FH goes every Sunday. I really do not want a full mass because I feel like I will be too uncomfortable. This is something he really wants. I don't know what to do!

Re: Catholic Girls- Are you having a full mass?
We are having a full mass. This is something I always wanted. I want to dedicate the mass to my dad, grandmas, and aunt.
I think its special and its beautiful. And we are also going to be instilling this as we are going to go to church every sunday and when we have a family the same thing. I think its important.
But to each their own

We are not having a full mass but if your fh is really religious, I would do it for him
I want to, but I don't even know the order of mass . Plus my MOH is half Jewish and she will feel awkward too standing up there.
MOH's don't do that much in a Catholic ceremony except hold the BOQ and fix the dress. Plus you're sitting for most of it so she shouldn't feel awkward.

Sorry I really meant when everyone else was receiving communion.

We are not extremely religious but FH's family is pretty religious. We are having a full mass. I would have gone for just the ceremony but FH wants the mass.

I'm absolutely having a full mass. As a Catholic, I believe that marriage is one of the most important of the sacraments, and like First Communion and Confirmation I believe that it should be celebrated in conjunction with the Eucharist. It would feel odd to me to be IN church and not recieve communion. Maybe its just b/c I attend church every week, but I can't imagine not having a mass.
I agree 100%. You are making vows in chruch beofre God to stay true to each other and God. It would not seem right to get married in a church befoer God and not have a mass to remember what he has done for us.
The marriage is not about the party or the pictures or the dress. Its about the vows you make to each other before God. If you are not religious, then why get married in a church?

sorry to beat a dead horse but i just got home from work and read the responses.
honestly...i don't give a flying rats arse about my guests religious sentiments when it comes to my full mass. I will have my full mass and anyone who doesn't want to come can stay home. I don't care if its just me and FH and the priest in there. but it's about recieving an important sacrament .
and about the not wanting a full mass because of issues with the church I see that some people took that personally but can I ask you a question. Isn't that a personal problem with the POLITICS of the church and religion rather than a problem with god himself or the sacrament? so I don't understand what one has to do with the other.
and about sex before marriage but still going to chirch as opposed to getting married in a church under a religion you don't particularly 100% care for...I am a sinner, we all are...in fact the church aknowledges the fact that we are all sinners and expects us to fall. but its about us acknowledging these sins and doing our best to correct them or prevent them in the future. I can't change the fact that I lost my virginity before FH...I'll never get that back. I do believe that god will forgive me for continuing to have sex before marriage because the sex I am having is not promiscuous or purely based on lust. I feel Joseph was a gift from god and I love him. I've had conversations with god and explained to him that the only reason Joseph and I are not married yet is because of not having the $ to get married and do it the way we feel is right. I don't think god would fault us for that. at least not if he's the god I believe him to be.
I just feel like the church ceremony IS the celebration...it's the reason for the entire day. I personally feel too many people pay so much focus to everything else...reception, making sure your guests are happy and comfortable and not bored, they turn the reception into this big to do and the ceremony itself gets lost in the shuffle like it's something that should just be done with.
and for people who don't believe in god or anything at all to get married in church...thats the most hypocritical of all. That I just don't get ...at all. It's like you have a strong enough belief in nothing to say ur agnostic but you don't care enough about ur stance to not get married in a church?!?! if ur gonna stand for something stand for it...own it.

Since I was one of the people who stated I had issues with the church, I wanted to clarify a little. You are correct in saying my issues are with the politics of the church. It has nothing to do with my belief in God. I do have faith in God and I have a great deal of respect for anyone who has faith, no matter what that faith is. Before I met FH, I had always said I would never marry in a Catholic church due to my personal beliefs, but having a church ceremony was VERY important to FH and FMIL. I respect that and, I feel, the compromise was having the ceremony in the church, but not the mass. I will not take communion because I have not been to confession in 12 years. Because of how I feel personally, and will not go for the sake of someone else. I feel that even if it is a practice I chose not to partake in, I still have respect for it and will not take communion “incorrectly” I am 100% agreement with you that the ceremony, the actual marriage is the most important point. The party and everything else is secondary.
I have read some of your previous posts (if I am not mistaken) and believe you are taking classes to receive all of your sacraments. I do have respect for you in doing this. I feel everyone should have faith and your commitment to the church and your FH is really fantastic. Please don’t think I am condemning (for lack of a better word) you or anyone else who feels that the mass is important. I was just explaining why we had chosen not to have one.

Re: Catholic Girls- Are you having a full mass?
Now I am one who said I have some confusion about my religion (Roman Catholic) I do care for my religion I just have confusions which are normal and acceptable to me atleast. I went to Church every Sunday and I went to Catholic school my whole life. I felt alot of the times I was forced to believe in the religion. I never felt that I could interpet things the way I saw them- for example the Bible. I remember telling my religion teacher one day what I felt a certain scripture meant. And he literally yelled at me saying I was wrong and I should re-evaluate what it meant and to write a paper on it. Yes that is not the Church's doing but it is still a Catholic preacher who speaks through God!!! Also, I am confused about not just politics I am confused with the sacraments and what is written in the Bible and what we are told to do. I mean yes sometimes the politics of the Church come into my head about my confusion but it isn't the only reason I am confused. So therefore I never said I was only confused because of just the politics. I am confused with God. But I guess since I had a brother die at such a young age and never got to see my grandparents and have been through a lot in my life where I asked for God's help and felt as if I was not receiving any (may just be because I wasn't receiving the answer I wanted) yes I have confusion with God at times. Also when Jesus preached to his followers he did not give them the Eucharist (yes that is because it is God's body and Jesus had to die for our sins in order for us to receive the body of Christ) but this leads to my believing of I do not feel I need to go to Church all the time to receive the Eucharist to feel close to God or to be forgiven my sins.
And yes I know I am a sinner. I have had sex before marriage and continue to do so. But I feel a person who preaches so much so about the Cahtolic religion and what is right would take their sins into consideration and not continue to commit that sin. I am not targeting this at anyone specifically because I know we have all had sex and continue to do so. But I think it is silly to say just because you arent having promiscous sex means God will forgive you. He WILL FORGIVE you even if you are promiscous if you want his forgiveness. Because God says having sex before marriage is sinning even if it is with one person and out of pure love.
IDK I just wanted to state my opinon as well but I do respect everyone elses. I guess I am just trying to justify my opinion which I shouldn't feel I need to. Everyone has their reasons for not wanting a mass or wanting a mass. And I do not feel that because a person chooses to have a mass just to please their parents is wrong nor do I see the people who are not ahving a mass but having a ceremony in the Church wrong. But I do see it weird and useless for people who have no religion to get married in a church just for it's scenary. I say each their own...and I give a lot of respect to all yuo who do go to Church and believe in your religion. I know religion is def therapy for some and for others a way of life and for others something that they believe in and cherish.
I guess what I am saying is I respect everyone's opinions but wanted to state mine. And I don't think anyone is wrong in believing what they believe in. Wouldn't the world be boring if everyone believed in the same thing??!!!

I'm not judging, I'm stating my opinion. Sorry if you can't handle it or take it personally. it wasn't towards you at all actually. it was towards anyone who replied or cared to read. stating my opinion isn't disrespecting anyone...did you ever think while my opinion may offend you or others your opinion or outlook may offend me or others? its just an opinion and how I view things and if ANYBODY can't handle it they shouldn't be posting or reading DISCUSSION threads. My view is not going to change...and I never said those people were horrible people so please don't put words in my mouth...I simply said I don'y get it, at all. It seems to me like it's more of a show for all the spectators than a spiritual ceremony...thats my opinion and I'm entitled to it. I'm sorry I'm a bit traditional in that sense. I have no problem with people who have beliefs other than mine...I studied wicca in my youth...but at that time of my life...I wouldn't have gotten married in a church even if my mother begged me...because at that point in my life...I wasn't catholic...it would have been like a big lie...like putting on a play or a show for everyone to watch.

i believe it is very selfless and respectful of you. I see why you are getting married in a church, you are thinking of your future with your husband and what type of relationship he would have with his parents. And I see yuo dont want to ruin that. I respect that. I am Catholic but I feel no need to judge those who ahvea different belief than me. This is something I fight with my mom about all the time. She doesnt see why other people would believe in something else. UGH HELLO MOM- people are different our religion isnt the best one and plus if some people don't want to believe God created all of us then so be it I don't think they should have to believe God does exsist and I know you arent trying to push your ideas on me...so I respect you Heather!!!

you have your belifes and others have their own and honestly if it cames down to either getting married in a church to save my FHs relationship with his family or to not get married in a church then...the church it is ..........also my mother has brain damage and can not sit that long i would never put her thu that!!!!! Im sorry but your rant there was a little harsh to me! and i am taking it towards me because i was the only person that mentioned being agnostic.I also know people who are very religious but dont WANT a full mass either?? what do you say to them?? are they horrible people because they dont want to sit there for an hour and a half?? please. I myself do not belive in the catholic religion, or any religion for that matter, thats how i feel. I do not belive in the whole 'god' thing i belivee that there is some kind of higher power and a place we go when we die. I believe in spirits and ghosts and afterlife. I do not belive ethat there is 1 person to answer to and 1 place EVERYONE goes to when they die!! Thats MY belief I dont judge anyone who loves their religion i RESPECT it. As should you!
i believe it is very selfless and respectful of you.
Thanks catie!

Just a point I wanted to make. As far as the Catholic Church is concerned you are not allowed to interpret the bible for yourself. This is why you have priests. Your are expected to either get your interpretations from the church or check with them before you make a decision.
I agree, the world would be boring if we were all the same!
