Catholic Girls- Are you having a full mass?

Original post by jessamyn78

I think this is the biggest argument between FH and I right now. No one in my family is really religious except for my 2 grandmas. In his family, they are no that religious either but some will receive communion. I barely go to church and FH goes every Sunday. I really do not want a full mass because I feel like I will be too uncomfortable. This is something he really wants. I don't know what to do!

I'm absolutely having a full mass. As a Catholic, I believe that marriage is one of the most important of the sacraments, and like First Communion and Confirmation I believe that it should be celebrated in conjunction with the Eucharist. It would feel odd to me to be IN church and not recieve communion. Maybe its just b/c I attend church every week, but I can't imagine not having a mass.

I agree, I can't imagine being at church and not receiving communion.

Honestly, I think thats the whole purpose of getting married in a church! That's the most important part of the day! If you just want to be in and out, don't use the Catholic church as a pit stop!! Its so much MORE than that.

I am not using the Church as a pit stop! I have received all of my sacraments, attend mass regularly and went through Catholic school. My FH is not Catholic and so we are not able to have a full mass, and the last thing I would want to do is have him convert to Catholicism just for the sake of having a full mass, as I believe that decision should mean much more.

wait, you cant have a full mass if your fh is not catholic? Ugh i didnt know that, im not catholic but FH is, i wanted to have a full mass

Not sure about the mass part, but you can't take communion if you have not had the sacriment in the church. I would check with the priest and see what he says.

oh ok yeah i know i cant take communion and i am fine with that part, ppl always say to me but wont you feel bad that others can and you can't and im just like no why would it i think fh's mother would've brought this up if we couldnt do a full mass so thats why i was confused.

You girls should be glad, in the christian orthodox religion the short version which i guess would be just the ceremony part for catholics is about an hour and a half...my parents had to do the long version bc my grandmother is very religions so it was over 2 hours long

Yeah, the main reason for having a mass is to recieve communion. Ifyou are ok with not receiving it than I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

Now I am one who said I have some confusion about my religion (Roman Catholic) I do care for my religion I just have confusions which are normal and acceptable to me atleast. I went to Church every Sunday and I went to Catholic school my whole life. I felt alot of the times I was forced to believe in the religion. I never felt that I could interpet things the way I saw them- for example the Bible. I remember telling my religion teacher one day what I felt a certain scripture meant. And he literally yelled at me saying I was wrong and I should re-evaluate what it meant and to write a paper on it. Yes that is not the Church's doing but it is still a Catholic preacher who speaks through God!!! Also, I am confused about not just politics I am confused with the sacraments and what is written in the Bible and what we are told to do. I mean yes sometimes the politics of the Church come into my head about my confusion but it isn't the only reason I am confused. So therefore I never said I was only confused because of just the politics. I am confused with God. But I guess since I had a brother die at such a young age and never got to see my grandparents and have been through a lot in my life where I asked for God's help and felt as if I was not receiving any (may just be because I wasn't receiving the answer I wanted) yes I have confusion with God at times. Also when Jesus preached to his followers he did not give them the Eucharist (yes that is because it is God's body and Jesus had to die for our sins in order for us to receive the body of Christ) but this leads to my believing of I do not feel I need to go to Church all the time to receive the Eucharist to feel close to God or to be forgiven my sins.

And yes I know I am a sinner. I have had sex before marriage and continue to do so. But I feel a person who preaches so much so about the Cahtolic religion and what is right would take their sins into consideration and not continue to commit that sin. I am not targeting this at anyone specifically because I know we have all had sex and continue to do so. But I think it is silly to say just because you arent having promiscous sex means God will forgive you. He WILL FORGIVE you even if you are promiscous if you want his forgiveness. Because God says having sex before marriage is sinning even if it is with one person and out of pure love.

IDK I just wanted to state my opinon as well but I do respect everyone elses. I guess I am just trying to justify my opinion which I shouldn't feel I need to. Everyone has their reasons for not wanting a mass or wanting a mass. And I do not feel that because a person chooses to have a mass just to please their parents is wrong nor do I see the people who are not ahving a mass but having a ceremony in the Church wrong. But I do see it weird and useless for people who have no religion to get married in a church just for it's scenary. I say each their own...and I give a lot of respect to all yuo who do go to Church and believe in your religion. I know religion is def therapy for some and for others a way of life and for others something that they believe in and cherish.

I guess what I am saying is I respect everyone's opinions but wanted to state mine. And I don't think anyone is wrong in believing what they believe in. Wouldn't the world be boring if everyone believed in the same thing??!!!

Just a point I wanted to make. As far as the Catholic Church is concerned you are not allowed to interpret the bible for yourself. This is why you have priests. Your are expected to either get your interpretations from the church or check with them before you make a decision.

I agree, the world would be boring if we were all the same!

really? because in my RCIA class they actually ask us to interpret the bibles scriptures into simple terms and they ask us what we think the scripture means and how we can apply it in our daily life. when I give my own interpretation they love it and they never tell anyone they are wrong. not yet anyway

actually that is true...i just mentioned this to my mom and she made a good point. after listening to the gospel and homily we are both going to walk away feeling different. because we do apply it to our everyday life and since our lives are different we mght have different interpretations!

Maybe my parish is just super liberal, but we're blatently TOLD that every passage of the Bible means something different to everyone.

I don't know what the rule is but basically the priest told us 'obviously you will having a ceremony only as you (fh)won't be able to take part in Communion', so I assumed this meant we were unable to.

Wow this topic got wildy out of hand. Have a mass, have a ceremony, do whatever the hell you want, but remember everyone is entitled to their own opinion! I hate when people get villified for daring to express something that isnt mainstream!

haha yeah one religion teacher of mine in HS made us all laugh when he was telling us about Noah's Ark. He was saying no way in well *hell* lol would Noah be able to get every animal 2 by 2 in the ark. He said it is more of an elaboration of the scripture etc.

As someone pointed out before as per church law, the interpretation (maybe that's the difference? Interpretation as apposed to personal meaning) is not allowed. But then again, I am 'old school' when it comes to these things and I was taught differently. The church has become more liberal in recent years.

yeah im not catholic so its not like its important for me to receive communion but i know it is important for some catholics and if those at my wedding want to do so then go right ahead, i dont want to stop them from doing something they believe in and is important to them, dont think people should do what i do or have the same views as me. I know its important for fh's family to receive communion so i wouldn't take that away from them.

oh yeah and i had to hold a tall candle the whole time, dont know if youve ever seen the 3 foot candles with the flowers and silk or tulle around it that you have to carry around, they do this for baptisms too, which again had to stand there with the candle the whole time...Hmmmm same for baptisms everybody stands up the entire time

Sorry if I offended anyone. Things tend to get misinterpreted when typed. Connotation and meaning sometimes gets lost. My only point was to explain why we had chosen not to have a mass and I felt that these reasons (along with other people’s reasons) were being attacked.
