Catholic Girls- Are you having a full mass?

Original post by jessamyn78

I think this is the biggest argument between FH and I right now. No one in my family is really religious except for my 2 grandmas. In his family, they are no that religious either but some will receive communion. I barely go to church and FH goes every Sunday. I really do not want a full mass because I feel like I will be too uncomfortable. This is something he really wants. I don't know what to do!

Not in my opinion, not that that counts for anything! But seriously, no. Of course, this is coming from a Catholic marrying a non-Catholic in a Catholic church.

I think any post about religion and beliefs is bound to become controversial because it is such a personal issue for everyone.
I don't think you are wrong. Marriage is about compromise and if it means something to FH then it is important and you are doing the right thing. Then again, this is coming from a non-practicing catholic who is marrying in the church.

it does count lol...just wondering because i saw posts about if you're not religious you shouldnt get married in the catholic church and so on. I will be the first to admit that i have some issues with organized religion, alot of it stems with how the church began and what it was based upon...i also dont see why so many people let religion divide us, i mean last i checked we were all created by the same god so the need for different religions i dont get then lol. Plus i believe that what matters is having a belief in something and having faith in god not necessarily having to follow a specific religion. I know people who go to church all the time and are so religious but all i think is how hypocritical they are, they are such judgemental and hateful people which i dont understand. I mean its said that were all sinners and yes the church acknowledges so if the church acknowledges this and is understanding of this then why arent other religious people? im thinking of specific people in my life and not anyone on the boards since i dont know people personally to judge for myself.

Also doesn't it say in the bible that only god can judge us, and isn't also a sin to act godlike so by judging isn't that what people are doing?

I think there are many wonderful reasons for getting married in a church, and I think that if youre doing it for yourself, your FH, your families, your faith, your children, etc, then these are all valid and wonderful reasons. As for the choice of a mass over a ceremony, thats personal. I'm choosing a mass b/c I cannot picture recieving a sacrament such as marriage w/out also recieving communion, but this is MY choice and I am in no way looking down on anyone who may choose other wise.

My only issue, and maybe this is offensive to some, but honestly, its my belief and I dont really care who I offend, is with people who get married in a church solely for the purpose of the scenery/atmosphere/photo opportunity. I feel like its using a sacred space in a disrespectful way, and I cannot in anyway see this as right.

Seems we have alot of beliefs in common. For what it is worth I honestly don't think you are doing the wrong thing. FFIL is the head of his parishes Sunday school and knows my beliefs and doesn't feel it is wrong either.

it is important to fh and his family and honestly to me i see everyone being as one, like i said in my previous post i dont let religion divide me from others. I see it as a house of god no matter what religion it is and think thats what matters, my grandmother is one of the most religious people i know and you know what as a kid she took me to catholic churches, she prayed there and saw it as just a house of god. She was also never one to tell us what we should be doing or what we need to do to be true to our religion. And there is alot more to showing your devotion to god than attending church or being the 'RIGHT ' religion, its also in our actions which i think are even more important. I am doing something out of love for another person

in the end i personally think it doesnt matter whether or not what you believed is ACTUALLY true or not and its not about whether or not we are practicing the 'RIGHT' religion but just the belief in a greater being

sorry to beat a dead horse but i just got home from work and read the responses.

honestly...i don't give a flying rats arse about my guests religious sentiments when it comes to my full mass. I will have my full mass and anyone who doesn't want to come can stay home. I don't care if its just me and FH and the priest in there. but it's about recieving an important sacrament .

and about the not wanting a full mass because of issues with the church I see that some people took that personally but can I ask you a question. Isn't that a personal problem with the POLITICS of the church and religion rather than a problem with god himself or the sacrament? so I don't understand what one has to do with the other.

and about sex before marriage but still going to chirch as opposed to getting married in a church under a religion you don't particularly 100% care for...I am a sinner, we all are...in fact the church aknowledges the fact that we are all sinners and expects us to fall. but its about us acknowledging these sins and doing our best to correct them or prevent them in the future. I can't change the fact that I lost my virginity before FH...I'll never get that back. I do believe that god will forgive me for continuing to have sex before marriage because the sex I am having is not promiscuous or purely based on lust. I feel Joseph was a gift from god and I love him. I've had conversations with god and explained to him that the only reason Joseph and I are not married yet is because of not having the $ to get married and do it the way we feel is right. I don't think god would fault us for that. at least not if he's the god I believe him to be.

I just feel like the church ceremony IS the celebration...it's the reason for the entire day. I personally feel too many people pay so much focus to everything else...reception, making sure your guests are happy and comfortable and not bored, they turn the reception into this big to do and the ceremony itself gets lost in the shuffle like it's something that should just be done with.

and for people who don't believe in god or anything at all to get married in church...thats the most hypocritical of all. That I just don't get ...at all. It's like you have a strong enough belief in nothing to say ur agnostic but you don't care enough about ur stance to not get married in a church?!?! if ur gonna stand for something stand for it...own it.

::OFF OF SOAP BOX::

wow!!!!! isnt part of being catholic also not to judge people????

you have your belifes and others have their own and honestly if it cames down to either getting married in a church to save my FHs relationship with his family or to not get married in a church then...the church it is ..........also my mother has brain damage and can not sit that long i would never put her thu that!!!!! Im sorry but your rant there was a little harsh to me! and i am taking it towards me because i was the only person that mentioned being agnostic.I also know people who are very religious but dont WANT a full mass either?? what do you say to them?? are they horrible people because they dont want to sit there for an hour and a half?? please. I myself do not belive in the catholic religion, or any religion for that matter, thats how i feel. I do not belive in the whole 'god' thing i belivee that there is some kind of higher power and a place we go when we die. I believe in spirits and ghosts and afterlife. I do not belive ethat there is 1 person to answer to and 1 place EVERYONE goes to when they die!! Thats MY belief I dont judge anyone who loves their religion i RESPECT it. As should you!

I'm not judging, I'm stating my opinion. Sorry if you can't handle it or take it personally. it wasn't towards you at all actually. it was towards anyone who replied or cared to read. stating my opinion isn't disrespecting anyone...did you ever think while my opinion may offend you or others your opinion or outlook may offend me or others? its just an opinion and how I view things and if ANYBODY can't handle it they shouldn't be posting or reading DISCUSSION threads. My view is not going to change...and I never said those people were horrible people so please don't put words in my mouth...I simply said I don'y get it, at all. It seems to me like it's more of a show for all the spectators than a spiritual ceremony...thats my opinion and I'm entitled to it. I'm sorry I'm a bit traditional in that sense. I have no problem with people who have beliefs other than mine...I studied wicca in my youth...but at that time of my life...I wouldn't have gotten married in a church even if my mother begged me...because at that point in my life...I wasn't catholic...it would have been like a big lie...like putting on a play or a show for everyone to watch.

But you sort of singled out 'people who don't believe in god or anything at all' Angl2001 was the only one to post about being Agnostic.

I'm getting married in a Lutheran church and I'm agnostic, we are not having a full mass for obvious reasons...

I also don't believe in a god or his son or any other person mentioned in the book. I get extremely uncomfortable when I have to sit for a mass and for that matter when people pray or talk about god and his plan for everyone. What is so wrong with that?

I feel like sometimes Heather and I have stronger morals and are more compassionate than some people who claim to be Christians...

Did you ever think that maybe we're getting married in a church for our FHs??? Maybe because they are more religous than us? You wouldn't say something like that to a Jewish girl who gets married in a church because her FH is Christian, would you???

Maybe you should stay off the soap box....

The soap box is equal opportunity! Just b/c you may disagree w/someone doesn't mean they dont have the right to express their opinion if its something they believe in strongly!

Whether it was directed at me or not it doesn't matter she directed it to the person who posted it....so It was still directed at someone., like I said in my other post I respect people who have different beliefs than I do...i Didn't say anything bad about it. IT is what it is...i never told her to stop posting. Yeah she believe strongly about it fine! But I just didn't like the post so i am gonna post what I want as well lol whatever.......just another post to keep me busy tongiht!

Um wow this really got out of hand. It's too bad that people can't post on here without getting attacked. I think it's great that everyone is having a mass or a ceremony and they're happy with it. Why people have to judge, I have no idea.
