So ladies, If you dont mind me asking, How many Carats are your center stones?
My FH wants me to get a bigger stone before our weddding...so Im curious to know if going bigger would not be a good idea.

i dont ever understand why someone would want a new or upgraded ering...Its the ring FH proposed with, why would you want to give that up? I also dont think carat size matters, imho the bigger the carat and the more the girl talks about it (carat size) i think she is stuck up and selfish....What does carat size matter...as long as the quality of the diamond i good and it sparkles then whats the point. Also, not everyone's ering has center stones...there are many different styles of rings out there, so someone may have a 1 carat ring of good quality diamond chips that looks amazing and someone may have a 3 carat center stone that isnt good quality...

i agree about the upgrading thing. I love my ring and it is what fh proposed to me with....if i upgraded my ring it wouldn't have the same sentiment....jmo.

i completely agree. FH picked out my e-ring on his own & i love it because of that.

i just looked at your ring in your album.. GIRLLLLL.. are you crazy?!?! your ring is beautiful! i would leave it as is and put the money towards something else.. but thats JHMO. everyone is different. im not going to share my Carat size bc i think these kinds of posts can go down the road to drama.. but you should feel very blessed with your ring!

I'm pretty sure every thread that asked this question in the history of LIW has turned into drama --

Common responses:

Yours may be bigger, but I'm sure it's poor quality

Yours is smaller which means your FH doesn't love you as much

Mine is small BUT it's a colorless and flawless -- i'd rather have that than a big yellow stone.

I hope history doesn't repeat itself. But I would keep the popcorn close by!

you get a hug too!!!

your ring is beautiful, IMO because FH give it to me and means something, I would never trade up. It was the work and meaning behind it not the actual ring. I hope that helps in your decision making.

A diamond is a diamond. It will shine and sparkle no matter what size it is.

Dont worry so much what everyone else has.

ITA with this.....for like the first week after i got engaged FH kept asking me if i wanted him to get a bigger center stone...i said NOOOOOOOOO cuz then its not the same ring that u proposed with!!!!

plus, like lori said, FH made sure the stone he got was near perfect quality, so i wouldnt want anything else! (its just over 1 carat btw)

Re: Center Carat Size

how about getting a nice diamond wedding band instead of upgrading the e-ring? That way you get more total carats but you keep the ring he proposed with. Problem solved!

i agree with alot of what youre saying but also dont think that anyone in that category should be stereotyped as stuck up or selfish. The selfish part i really dont understand bc he bought it not her, unless she demanded it. I didnt give dh any instructions, i wanted no part of it and gave him no hints. I said i wanted him to pick out whatever ring he liked and it will be fine with me. Frustrated him a bit but its what i wanted to do.

I NEVER tell anybody my carat size, thats my business, never post it on here, and the most ive told were 2 friends when they asked and even then I didnt really want to. I didnt even ask dh actually how many carats my ring was. We were on vacation when he proposed and then a little while after he came back he said to me 'you didnt even ask how many carats it is, dont you want to know' i said i guess if you want to tell me. So i didnt know until weeks after he proposed what it even was bc didnt think to ask. I didnt even know what the average carat was for e-rings or any of that info. I never cared, if you tell me now grades on color, quality and all that i have no idea what they even mean. Some girls tell me oh mine is z, c or whatever letters they say and i just say ok i have no idea what youre saying.

i dont think any of this matters in the end. ANd just bc someone has a bigger ring doesnt mean the guy spent more. I know a guy who got his wife a big diamond but his uncle owns a jewelry shop so got an awesome deal. My dh also got an awesome deal and someone with a smaller ring, her fh/dh might've spent more. So thats why ppl shouldn't compare just by size, it could be an heirloom of the family that he didnt spend a dime on.

i know this was an innocent post with no intentions of getting ugly, but like danielle said, this is a post that will turn into arguments.

your ring is beautiful and why would fh want you to change it? isnt it the one that he gave you to begin with?

Believe me...I love my ring so much.
But he thinks he didnt do a good enough job with it and wants to get something bigger. I told him the ring is perfect, he just wants me to be happy with it.
Some girls gave me good advice on how to compensate later on if he wants to upgrade it...which I think is a great idea..like for our 5 or 10 yrs anniversary maybe..

ita - and i think its really noble of you that you never told anyone your carat size....on a similar note its funny bc my mother was saying the other day how all these people keep asking her how much my dress was and she doesn't answer, she never told anyone how much her own cost....well she said till the day she dies no one will ever know how much her own gown cost (she wouldnt even tell me)

yeah when it comes to money its a real personal question, i never say how much my gown was either, i barely told dh lol. Its kind of like the question 'how much money do you make' unless somebody is asking bc they need to know for themselves bc looking at the same thing then its different i guess. But just to know no.

I also have to say how naive and stupid i was regarding diamonds before i was engaged. When i was younger i worked at a salon on 5th ave, and everyone who went in there was filthy rich, so i would always see these ladies with HUGE diamond rings. Or at my moms salon alot of rich woman go there and you always hear ppl say 'omg look at her ring, its 8 carats, 10 carats, one woman came in once with 25 carats, she never wears it though just special occasions and that night she had an event' but unless somebody point out rings i never really looked at e-rings. I had no idea what an average size is, so when i called ppl to say i was engaged i was asked how big it was(weird question to ask) and i said i dont know i guess average e-ring size. I was so used to seeing all these women with huge rocks that i thought maybe thats the normal size or close to it lol so compared to that i thought average to small i guess.

IMO, and i know i'm gonna get yelled at for this... but down the road (like on a special anniversary or something) i wouldn't say no if FH wanted to upgrade the ring. Well, not the setting or anything cuz i love it but the center stone. I LOVE LOVE my ring but if he's going to offer why not lol.
It's not something i would ask for though but i'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth.

Maybe it's different for me though because i pretty much picked out my ring lol

Edited cuz i just looked at your ring. It is BEAUTIFUL!!! If you two do decide to upgrade the center stone just be careful that it still fits with the setting and doesn't overpower it.

Thanks for the advice...really appreciated :) probably wont now after everyones replies. Maybe I will let him do it a couple years after were married.

why the heII are people so concerned with price anyways...i cant imagine asking someone how much they spent on something such as wedding dress...especially if i didnt contribute to it at all!

I want to upgrade my center stone. I don't think that's selfish. I don't need to do it NOW, but we're definitely going to do it eventually. I love, love, love my setting but FH wants to give me a bigger center stone when he can afford it. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
