Ceremony and Reception Hall

Ceremony and Reception Hall

Hi!! I was wondering if anybody can recommend a place for both ceremony and reception. My fiance and I are grad/med students and have a very small budget. We are trying to stay under 15,000 total, not including honeymoon. According to the budgeting software, that gives us 7500 for recetion and ceremony. His parents can't afford to help, and my only family is my younger sister, so no help there. We are looking to have 75-90 people or so. I want a NYC theme wedding, so somewhere in NYC with a city feel and skyline would be nice. BUT I realize this isn't always possible within my budget, so I am willing to consider other places also.

Are there places I can check out, or am I just being delusional with my budget? I would rather not have to elope, but the prices in the city are really scaring me! Please help!!

I forgot to add that any other money saving tip would be helpful also.I am a med student, and have neither the talent nor the time for many of the DIY projects, though I AM willing to try.

And the wedding is supposed to be in the FALL of 2010.

Thank you so much!!

Also, having your wedding either during the day or on a Sunday will save you a TON of money

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't think that you can do a catering hall in NYC for that 7500. BUT, you probably can do something nice on Long Island in that range, especially if you do it on a Thursday night or a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
Coral House and Swan Club were the most affordable places I looked at on Long Island, and both were pretty. You may be able to add more to the reception/ceremony budget if you take some back from your dress , flowers, and invitations. There are beautiful dresses for under 1K, I think the budgeting software usually budgets a bigger percentage of your budget on the dress. Good luck!

I agree with Mspotterhead, i dont think NYC is doable for that amount of money-I could definitely be wrong but its highly unlikely.

I would check out Swan Club, they are really affordable, if you do however want something in Manhattan check out 202 East (that's the name), it's like a loft and they can decorate it, it's used exclusively for wedding and bar/bat mitvahs. The rental of the hall costs 2000.00 thats the flat fee and then you would have catering costs. I was considering this place in the beginning, you can get a catering company to cater to your tastes and budgets accordingly.BTW the loft can accommodate I believe up to 100 people comfortably. Hope this helps!

Re: Ceremony and Reception Hall

i know it wont have the NYC skyline and such, but I would look into places like

Chateau La Mer
Chateau Briand
Fox Hollow
Swan Club
Coral House
Historical Thatched Cottage

Or some places have an all inclusive package for around 10k including flowers, Photo, video, limo, etc.

Mediterranean Manor
Holiday Inn Plainview
Ariana Waterfall Caterers
Brentwood Country Club

Sorry no skyline.... but Chateau Briand definitely gives you the old New York feel. Very affordable, especially on Fri, Sat afternoon and Sun.

If you're on a very tight budget, you might want to check out Ariana Waterfall and Manor East. Both give package deals, so they were the most affordable places I found.
Also, the Holiday Inn in Plainview is VERY nice. Its lack the 'NYC' feel more than the others but the price is great.

You can try Cafe on the Green in Bayside, Queens. It overlooks the Throgs Neck Bridge. Prices start at $60 pp. They can accommodate up to 200

www.cafeonthegreenrestaurant.com

They have a menu online I think they are very affordable.

You can also try the Metropolitan Building in LIC, very old not sure of the pricing.

Also for inexpensive but nice wedding gown, try Estelles in Farmingdale. I know two girls that got their dresses there, they were very happy.

Invitations can be bought at Michaels or AC Moore with 50% off coupons and brought to a local printer for printing.

www.wow-coupons.com -- always have AC Moore Coupons. Go to the retail section.

Flowers, check Trader Joes and Whole Foods or another local grocery store or the flower mart in the city.

For Honeymoon, definitly try the Dominician Republic, Puerta Plata can do an all-inclusive for about $1,000.

Oh try the Metropolitan in Glen Cove, it's got a very posh NYC feel and if you go towards a less busy night/season that will save you money too.

Good luck! planning a wedding and being in med school is brave, you got all the girls here to help you out though

It may also save money to have your wedding on a Friday night or Saturday/Sunday afternoon. When we were looking there were places offering Saturday/Sunday brunch weddings. I thought it was a cute idea since the two of us looove brunch food, but ultimately it was easier for our families if we had it at night.

I've also heard of weddings where the ceremony was just followed by a cocktail reception instead of a full dinner party. You may want to consider doing something like that and then if you have money left over taking a group of close people out to a restaurant...

Also try thatched cottage. They have package deals including DJ photography, etc.

Friday and Sunday in the winter is real cheap.

Had I read this about 2 weeks ago, I would say no way, BUT now I know for certain that it's
DEFFFF doable. my friends rh is in NYC (midtown) and its less than 7,500!!

she's doing it at the midtown loft and terrace.

details

WEEKDAY (you may get a Friday... but thats probably only if you book close to the date, usually the best deals happen for mon- thurs)

its an empty space so you have to rent out everything.... and you can probably negotiate and get access to the terrace, like my girlfriend did.

renting everything from knives to tables to linens etc, may seem expensive but she found a great place in brooklyn, and i think there is one in the bronx, too. 60inch round tables are 12.50 to rent and seat 10 people. chairs are like 2.50 for the cheapest and 4 to 6 for the most expensive, they rent out plates, cups, silverware etc.
linens you can get from white plains linens, the a la carte department, speak with Felice (I helped my friend get the linens) floor length 120 round is 12.50 and chair covers are 3 with sash.

Its not like the waldorf or anything, but its in NYC and has a beautiful terrace and i know for a fact you can get it for less than 7500. When and if you call, let them know your situation and tell them your budget for the hall CANNOT exceed 4,000. (leave the 3,500 for renting and decorating). You may end up with a thursday.... or maybe even a friday if you book closer to the date. The closer to the date, the lower the price because they just want to fill up those dates.

GOOD LUCK!!! and i dont think ive ever seen a bride on here use this RH, but ill be attending the wedding next week and ill make sure to post about it. so maybe this can be a place for those brides who want nyc weddings but dont have to pay the big $$$$$ to get it. Hope this helps!!!
