China or no China?

Original post by beebs341

My sister is strongly advising me not to go crazy on China. When she got married she registered for 12 place settings! I didn't really want China until I went to BB&B and got all excited. I think I'm just going to get Casual China though. Its less money, and not as fancy looking. I feel I'll get more use out of it that way.
Are you girls getting china? If so, is it super elegant?

We registered for Lenox Bellina - I love it! I have always wanted fine china and always envisioned myself taking out our china for the holidays and special occassions. We also were given the cake knife & server of the pattern, which we will use at the wedding - so it will always be very special when we take out our fine china (that's if we receive the full set)!

i'm not getting it. although i love the idea, its just not practical for me. i have no where to put it and wont use it that often. i'd rather have my guests buy me more of the things i need on an everyday basis than china. plus if you only get a few settings then i have to worry about buying the rest.
i'm also the only daughter so i can always get my moms

me too!!

I don't think we'll register for it, but by the time I want china to be hosting dinners my mom will probably be tired of cooking holiday dinners and will give me my gma's china

We are considering casual china. I just don't have the space for both casual and formal diningware esp. those that doesn't get used often. I host most holidays at my place now... and to be honest, the kids, well...I wouldn't trust them with the really elegant ware. I have really nice holiday ware to begin with...I am a shopaholic and have Thanksgiving, Halloween (yep) Easter and Christmas already. LOL. Hence no more room for the really elegant stuff. LOL I'll give aware my current daily service to one of my sisters tho.

We registered for China!! LENOX OPAL INNOCENCE it's beautiful!!!

US too!!! Love it!!!!! We've already gotten half of our place settings!

I was not sure if I was even going to register for china at all, but my mom said that we will regret it many years down the line.

And I was totally anti-opal innocence (no offense to those who registered for it)... it's just such a common pattern to register for...

Just curious...was that like a necessary thing to say???

I haven't registered yet but when I do I probably will register for China. I love the Vera Wang lace china pattern but I don't plan or registering for to many sets, maybe like 6. I feel bad asking for it in this economy.

we got the mikasa parchment 8 piece place setting- 42 piece set for $200 on BBB .... so it was VERY cheap but is super nice looking... but with all the additional pieces that go with the set... all my china came to about $600

i would like to use the dishes as my everyday dishes... FH and i have a tendency to use lots of paper plates (prob bc we dont have a dishwasher yet lol), but on those rare occassions, it would be nice to break out the china

Thats awesome. The set I was interested in is also Mikasa and was on sale for $200 @ BBB. I was a little nervous that I wasn't understanding the sales pitch. So you got all 8 settings for this price? Thats unbelievable!

We weren't going to....but then I fell in love with the Lenox Chirp! We are having a Lovebirds theme wedding and this was just perfect for us.

It's casual, well priced and fun...I'm sure we'll use it often.

I'm sorry. I feel like a moron for saying that. i'm edgy today because things are up in limbo for the house we're in contract for... the bank we';re getting the mortgage from is being super critical of everything and I'm afraid we're going to lose our house.

Again, please accept my apology. I'm not myself today. The Opal Innocence really is a beautiful design. I hope you get all the pieces you've registered for and enjoy many romantic meals and holiday meals on it.

if you plan to use it more then twice a year I say go for it otherwise don't bother. It is expensive, a PIA to store it unless you have a china cabinet or a good place to keep it clean and you change your taste as the years go.

I love china - but living in an apartment even with plenty of space and a china closet we just don't find the need right now. When we have a house and I start to entertain formally more then twice a year this is when I will save up and invest in a set. I only do thanksgiving and some small cocktail like events and our everyday dishes are nice enough to pass for it.

But! I found a pattern that I love, and it's definitely casual china. Check out the Lenox Simply Fine line. There's a few different patterns - we registered for the Voila pattern.

$99 per 4-piece place setting at BBB and then with a 20% off coupon it's only $80! And they don't have too too many accessories to go crazy over. So it'll be nice to have it, especially since I have hand-me-down Corelle for everyday.

Good luck!

i love this pattern also... i originally registered for it but part of me wanted something less expensive so we could have other things bought for us

I LOVE this china!!! We are not registering for china b/c I inherited my greatgrandmothers china when I got engaged...then my Grandmother bought us another set that I have not seen yet but apparently it is imported from France. So I did not get to pick my china.

Re: China or no China?

lsorrent - your china pattern in stunning! i love it. i dont think it was out yet when i registered or i probably would have picked it :) (We went with something similar but i think i might like yours even better)

we were ambivalent about china, looked around and found a pattern we both liked so we registered for it. our set didn't have a huge number of pieces (some have soup tureens, gravy boats, tea and coffee pots, and lots of other accessories) so we registered for 12 place settings, 1 platter, 2 open veg bowls, sugar, creamer, accent plates and multi-purpose bowls. we did get it all, and it's nice to have although we've used it less than 10 times so far.

it's a little scary to think of how much $$$ it adds up to, but it's something we'd never buy for ourselves and I hope to use it more down the road for family dinners and such. don't go crazy though; if there are things you NEED or would rather have, it might be worth registering for those things first.
