Church won't allow Hand Ceremony

Church won't allow Hand Ceremony

I'm kind of upset, our 'old school' monsignor said it 'gets in the way' of the real mass and soon people will have all kinds of requests, that they have to draw the line somewhere.

I was really looking forward to this

That stinks. I never thought it would be an issue, i just assumed that they would allow it. Now, I better ask. Sorry about that.

Aww Cin, I'm sorry!! I'm trying to think of some other time that you could do it, doesn't have to be part of the actual ceremony. Maybe just have someone read it at your RD, the meaning is still there.

Your right Cindy...I was thinking the same

After all you went through to get married in the church, you would think he would allow it. When a couple shows enthusiasm to embrace a faith, it demonstrates great devotion to me. I like Cindy's idea though.

What exactly is a hand ceremony?

[OFFICIANT]

With our hands, we make and affect the things that surround us and shape our lives. They can be considered a representation of who we are through what we choose to do. In any relationship, our actions speak volumes. Words are not enough to bind two people together. Their actions and, thus, their hands, bind them together as well.

Maid of Honor reads:
Cindy, please face Ray, and hold his hands, palms up, so you may see the gift that they are to you. (Bride and groom should be facing each other, the groom’s upturned hands resting in the brides’.)

These are the hands, young and strong and vibrant with love, that are holding yours on your wedding day, as he promises to love you all the days of his life.

These are the hands you will place with expectant joy against your stomach, until he too, feels his child stir within your womb.

These are the hands that look so large and clumsy, yet will be so gentle as he holds your baby for the first time.

These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, for a lifetime of happiness.

These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes: tears of sorrow and tears of joy.

These are the hands that will tenderly lift your chin and brush your cheek as they raise your face to look into his eyes: eyes that are filled completely with his overwhelming love and desire for you.

Best Man reads:
Ray, please hold Cindy’s hands, palms up, where you may see the gift that they are to you. (Bride should now place her upturned hands in the Groom’s hands.)

These are the hands, smooth, young, and carefree, that are holding yours on your wedding day, as she pledges her love and commitment to you all the days of her life.

These are the hands that will hold each child in tender love, soothing them through illness and hurts, supporting and encouraging them along the way, and knowing when it’s time to let go.

These are the hands that will massage tension from your neck and back in the evenings, after you’ve both had a long hard day.

These are the hands that will hold you tight as you struggle through difficult times.

They are the hands that will comfort you when you are sick or console you when you are grieving. These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, for a lifetime of happiness.

These are the hands that will hold you in joy and excitement and hope, each time she tells you that you are to have another child; that together you have created a new life.

Perhaps these are the hands that will comfort you when you are told you cannot have a child, and will convince you that together you will create new life in other ways.

These are the hands that will give you support as she encourages you to chase down your dreams. Together, as a team, everything you wish for can be realized.

Clergy reads:
Dear Father, bless the hands that you see before you this day. May they always be held by one another. Give them the strength to hold on during the storms of stress and the dark of disillusionment. Keep them tender and gentle as they nurture each other in their love.

Help these hands to continue building a relationship founded in your grace, rich in caring, and devoted to reaching for your perfection. May Cindy and Raymond see their four hands as healer, protector, shelter, and guide.

We ask this in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you now and forever. Amen.

Re: Church won't allow Hand Ceremony

The ceremony is really beautiful, we did it in Pre Cana, but I think it might be too long for the ceremony, especially if you are already having a Mass.
I would love to do it too, but I think there are time constraints, since I think there is a ceremony after ours.

our hand ceremony will be a little different, not so religious.
I'm sorry Cindy thats so stinky of the church. Maybe you can do it at the RH or during the reception at some pont.

That stinks...I'm sorry! My church said they would do it but that the mass really starts to drag on if you add all sorts of extras. He suggested doing it at the rehearsal...and talked about how it is a very special thing to share with your nearest and dearest. Just a thought!

Re: Church won't allow Hand Ceremony

I would be really upset. My church allowed it but no petal cones or rice stuff like that they are fussy on. You are paying all that money to get married there. I thought with the hand ceremony it was getting long so I asked if I could take out the second reading and she said yes, no problem. Ask if you can do that and remind them You are 'donating' so much to the church. The nerve! I am so sorry

Re: Church won't allow Hand Ceremony

Maybe you could shorten it a little and use it part of your vows

Re: Church won't allow Hand Ceremony

Yeah, um, how much $$$$$ are you `donating' to the church and they can't freaking allow it?!?!?!!? That is pathetic.

Re: Church won't allow Hand Ceremony

I sort of had doubts as soon as I brought it up. We're getting married by the monsignor who is just about retiring & he's very OLD SCHOOL. On the list it says if you like you MAY select 1 of the following & it listed the unity candle/flowers to Mary/ or rose ceremony to parents & he was kind of downplaying those as well.

As soon as I told him what the hand ceremony was he said, we can not permit that (no ifs ands or buts).

As some of you know we just got 'clearance' to get married in our church & I don't want to make any undue waves.

I'm thinking maybe we'll do at RD...

Re: Church won't allow Hand Ceremony

No offense--but it really isnt about the amount of money you are donating or not. The traditions that are in a church ceremony are there because they are traditions of the church. The mass is set up a certain way to reflect those long standing traditions. This isnt just like another vendor--it is quite different. Liturgical services are celebrations of a sacrament--which belongs to the whole community. So not allowing a basically secular tradition is not mean, its just not part of the faith. Im not trying to be mean to the person asking the question at all, its just that some of the answers to the post are not understanding of the meaning of having a church wedding in the first place and I see this alot on here and it bothers me. The church has to charge fees to pay organists, cantors, clean up after a ceremony, etc. It is a donation in that you can write it off if you want to and the money goes to the upkeep of the church. To suggest that the money is pocketed by someone else is just ridiculous. All organizations require money to keep going, thats just basic knowledge of our society. Sorry to vent on this post--it just irritates me when people complain about this stuff. If someone doesnt like church tradition, dont get married there...but I dont think theres a need to bash something that is clearly not understood. Again, this is not at all against the original poster.

Cindy I never heard of a hands ceremony but I think that is really beautiful.

If they won't do it at the church then maybe you could do it at the reception. I think even someone like your Dad could help with that if the monsignor won't be at the reception. Its really beautiful and I hope you can find some way to incorporate into your day.

Re: Church won't allow Hand Ceremony

do it during the reception. maybe before the toasts?? that way anyone who skips the church still gets to see a very romantic part of your day!

Re: Church won't allow Hand Ceremony

You know, maybe we'll do that right after the toast. The version I have the best man/MOH reads....

thank you ladies!!!!!!!!!!!!
