Re: CNN article
Well keeping in mind the article encompasses a general number for all areas, i don't think the numbers are that skewed. I mean I would never give less than $100 for myself no matter who it was but it was pretty accurate that even over $150 for a close friend/relative is the norm these days. (if you're talking about per person, not per couple!)

Interesting to hear the author's response to your rebuttle. A year to give a gift, really? I couldn't imagine waiting that long!

Re: CNN article
I think the article is accurate for weddings outside of the tri-state area. I've gone to weddings down south and you don't give cash/check to the couple - you bring a boxed gift to the wedding.

I dont believe in doubling the plate. i Say you give what you can afford to give, but most people know that you are getting married 3 months before and they should be able to save more then 50 or even 75.00. Thats cheap.

My re-buttle covered all bases. I am curious to get a response. NY should have it's own reporting!

NY weddings are def. all by themselves!!! My out of town family was amazed by mine, because it was so unlike what they were used to....
Please share the author's response when you get it.

Re: CNN article
I found this somewhere else on the site:
The high cost of saying 'I do' Although today's average wedding costs $26,327 (including the ceremony and a formal reception), the actual price tag varies considerably, depending on where you live.
Northeast $32,221 N.Y. Metro $38,361 South/SE $22,662 Midwest $23,181 West $27,776 AVERAGE $26,327

I agree. I found nothing wrong with this article. I would rather see an AMENDMENT to it than a REBUTTAL in order to address weddings in the tri-state area or any other geographical location where spending is set way apart from the national average.

Re: CNN article
Long Island is most definitely one of the most expensive places to get married...AND to give a gift. I moved here 4 years ago, and got a slap in the face as to the cost. it is not near that in many other areas. I know upstate New York, you can pull of a pretty nice wedding for under 10,000.$50.00 is def. a normal gift up there. SO it's just where we live, everything in Long Island is ABOVE normal compared to the rest of America. But that's why we love it right?!

I agree..... as someone no longer living in NY, people give way less in other parts of the country....my FH has been shocked at the generousity (which is quite normal by NY standards).

Re: CNN article
Waiting for a gift for a year-I probably wouldnt speak to you anymore....and as far as money and spending on a gift, FH and I have a wedding to go to in a few weeks for very good friends of ours and most likely will give them 200 or more, since I havent found out where they are registered, even then I would still spend that much on their gift.

That is pretty insulting. Who is anyone to judge what someone else can afford? The whole concept of 'covering your plate' is not a nationwide thing. Where I live in VA people wouldn't think you were cheap if you gave 75 as a gift. Weddings seem to be more about the marriage and not as much about gifts and parties.

I agree, I would feel so much better about attending weddings if I knew that gift giving was not going to break the bank. It is out of control. A gift is a gift. A wedding is a wedding no matter where you live. If couples want to do it up big time in NY, then why do we have to give more of a gift. I would take a southern wedding anytime and gladly hand over 100.00.

Re: CNN article
Also I know a bunch of my friends who have waited up to a year to get the gift for the couple... it happens regularly.
