Controversial Q (NWR)

Controversial Q (NWR)

I'm hoping this wont spiral out of control, but I just saw a commercial for the show about a 500 lbs man immediately followed by one for bowflex and it made me think...

Do you think everyone has the potential to be thin? I don't mean a size 0, but not overweight and not obese.

Edit: to clarify, then I say 'thin' i mean a healthy weight. I do not mean a size 0 or 2, that would obviously depend on your body type.

Re: Controversial Q (NWR)

i honestly think that it has a lot to do with your starting point. And by that i mean, what your parents are like, body type wise.

Both of my parents are overweight, my mom being obese.....i don't have the body chemistry to be small. I would think that if i hit a size 12, i'd be healthy....but i'm not made to be much smaller.

Re: Controversial Q (NWR)

i'm not totally sure how I feel. I know people have different body types, and some people can never be a size 2 no matter what they do, but I do generally think that if someone eats healthy and exercises that almost anyone (absent a medical condition) can be a healthy weight (whatever that means for their body type). Some people have to work harder than others, but I do think it's possible.

I'm not sure how I feel about gastric bypass. I guess in some cases it's just too hard to lose the weight naturally and it's the only way..

thats a tough question..i think its really dependent on genetics..and body structure...some girls are just bigger boned than others..its whatever is proportionate to your body type

It really depends on whether or not there are underlying health issues. Some people have no control over it. Genetics also plays a huge part. So no, I don't think everyone has the potential of being thin.

As somone who is plus sized and has been most of my life...

I can say that your genes have a lot to do with it. My great grandma and her husband, grandma and mom and my dad are all considered obese by medical standards. I think I have been on some kind of diet since jr high. All along being very physically healthy other wise than my weight. I was into sports and have always lived a very healthy life style.... but I do NOT think everyone can be a size 2,

Re: Controversial Q (NWR)

Definitely depends on family history and genetics. IMO, anyway.

My whole family is overweight, most not obese, but heavy. My sister and I will never be 'skinny' it's not in our genetic make-up. My sister is thinner than me...really an average size 6 or 8, but she doesn't look 'thin'

Some of my family is obese...my cousin had gastric bypass. I'm totally against it. I believe you can be healthy and overweight..and I honestly think he didn't try and used it as an easy way out.

I used to think that there was no way I could ever be 'thin.' I was ALWAYS a size 12/14, and I just wrote it off as, 'oh this is in my genes.' But I know now, that I used this as an excuse. As soon as I joined WW and started eating HEALTHY and exercising the weight came RIGHT off. Its hard work... it is NOT easy... but I think saying that you're destined to be big b/c its in your genes is a cop out. You CAN be smaller and healthier, its just a matter of whether or not you're committed enough to your health to be proactive about it.

actually I think it depends on the person, and a healthy life style, but I also know that people with health problems have weight issues, maybe thyroid problems or a type of medication, those to can cause weight issues. but I think no matter what the weight of a person is it is still what counts on the inside.

Re: Controversial Q (NWR)

maybe not the potential of being thin but we have to also remember the average woman i think is a size 12. ALthough we see all these skinny models and actresses its not what the average woman is. I think being healthy is key, you can be skinny and unhealthy or overweight and healthy or vice versa too of course. If you are overweight and not taking care of yourself and eating more healthy and getting more physical activitiy then yes I think that can be a problem. Not so much on a physical aspect but healthwise.

My cousin is overweight and complains about the weight but at the same time she will only eat cheeseburgers, pizza and drink TONS of soda a day. She is young now but I do worry about her health when she gets older. Eating like that all the time whether you are overweight or even skinny bc yes there are those who can eat whatever they want and not gain weight, but eating like that regardless all the time is not good at all. I know someone who is young and thin but has very high cholesterol. I don't think people always think about what all this fatty and heavy food can do to you in the long run. Not that you should never eat it, bc hey we all love to indulge but not where its the only thing you do eat.

I'm trying to reconcile my thoughts about gastric bypass with everything else.

I think I feel that everyone has the potential to be a healthy weight, but genetics can make it harder for some, and so does environment. Some people get to the point where it's near impossible to get back down to a healthy weight and realistically their only choice is gastric bypass. I do think the situation probably could have been avoided before it reached that point, but the reality is it didn't. in those very severe cases I think gastric bypass can be OK.... but it shouldnt be used as an easy weightloss trick because it's not 'easy' by any means

Deffinatly understand your point.. however- there are people who do not try,, just talk and there are people who have given it their all and it did not change much.

I think there is a lot of emphasis on weight and size and there is a seperate issue of being healthy. I used to be considered a very healthy morbidly obese (doctors term) teenager to young woman,. however nothing i did helped. I would stand on my head if they told me too.. it was very fustrating

i'm sorry - but i have to disagree with this, because of my history.

2 years ago i was on a MAJOR health kick - taking care of myself, etc. I went to the gym 6 days a week for 4 hours per day (no joke, sometimes more than 4 hours) and didn't lose an OUNCE. I went to the doc in tears and he put me on a weight loss medication. I lost 20 pounds total in 6 months and that was it. I stayed on the medication for almost a year and went to the gym maybe 5 times a week after my best friends' wedding and didn't lose another ounce.

My bone structure is NOT made to be small...i have a large frame, because of my genes.

i am a plus sized gal---and i admit that i have been lazy for awhile...and i'm going to start working out and eating healthier. (going to the gym tonite!)

however--that being said.......i think that there are some people out there who will never be 'slender' or 'thin'. my sister is a perfect example.....she's also plus sized....around a size 22 or so. poor girl goes to the gym, does yoga, eats VERY healthy. she barely eats ANY red meat at all, almost never touches pork.....mostly sticks to lean turkey & chicken. loves salads and cooks her own meals chock full of vegetables and such. unfortunately, she has a thyroid issue and no matter what she does---she can't lose the excess weight. she takes medication for her thyroid and hormonally its nearly impossible for her to lose the excess weight. she is very healthy---blood pressure is fine, cholesterol great. but if you SAW her you'd think 'wow--she needs to go on a diet'

it sux cause i know she works hard to try and lose more weight, but its like the body works against her!

Re: Controversial Q (NWR)

i think the problem starts at a young age - i dont understand parents that let their children become overweight - when i see overweight children i feel like its a form of child abuse - most of the people i know who are obese were also obese/overweight children - in my opinion there is no reason an 8 year old should be overweight - and if your child is eating healthy and still overweight then take them to a doctor, get them to a nutrionist, make them do some kind of exercise program - do something - last night my FH and I went to grab a cup of coffee - in the same shopping center is a mcdonalds - 3 kids get out of a car - i assume they were sibilings - the woman who i am assuming was their mom (she was also overweight) stayed in the car while the 3 who were all overweight kid (all had to be under 12) ran into mcdonalds - it sickened me.....its like dont you care about your childrens health? to me that is neglecting them - its one thing to not care about yourself but you should care about your kids health....i think proper nutrition and eating habits should be taught at a young age and encouraged and i think that its something that is lacking in this country - i go to the mall and i cant believe the sizes that these kids are - i feel sorry for them because its bad for their health

Re: Controversial Q (NWR)

I've seen both sides. Those who do try very hard and dont have great results. But I have also seen those who do complain all the time about the weight but at the same time will turn around the next second and eat so much greasy and heavy food. Even if they get sick from the food continue to eat for those few minutes of pleasure. I will not comment on all overweight people because it is on an individual basis. But if you're overweight and not doing anything about it at all, no effort and continue eating very badly then of course you won't get thinner. Not that you have to get thin because ideal weight is different for everybody.

I had gained alot of weight a few years ago and honestly there was nobody to blame but me. I would eat pasta almost everyday, eating cheeseburgers and drink TONS of soda a day. Just soda they say accounts for at least 10 of your extra pounds and cutting just that out willmake a big difference and ive done that and noticed the difference. When i gained weight, i did the same thing i would complain about it but then a few minutes later i was stuffing my face. My mom would always laugh at me saying 'didn't you just complain about your weight and now you're eating that' It did get to a point where i decided to just change my whole lifestyle. You do have to give 100%, stick to eating very healthy, and have to get your mind to think like that too.

my moms best friend was big most of her life. She did everything to lose weight, ended up being that she had a thyroid problem. She had the surgery and you know what did get to a point where she was thin, she was a person who did think that she would never get that small

Re: Controversial Q (NWR)

I think that people can do it if they really try. How about that show 'the biggest loser' Look at how they look at the end of the show. It's amazing! For some i think it's easier then others...and its hard work. If you actually hear how some of the 'movie stars' lose the weight its' amazing. They restrict their diet amazingly and work out like 2-3 times a day. Now a normal person couldn't do that but with effort I think it's definitely possible.
