I know we're 'not supposed to go there' but has anyone been there anyways? I was just looking at something on the Travel Channel's website. It said to look into daytrips to Cuba is staying in Negril, Jamaica. Kinda curious about how it is. So, anyone been to Cuba?

Re: Cuba?
I'm Cuban...and I was a politics major in college and am now a law student. This is not meant as 'legal advice' but I have looked into the laws about this very throroughly. The sanctions are mostly economic, meaning that you are not allowed to spend more than a certain amount of money per day in Cuba. The amount is so low that it would be physically impossible for someone to go there and have 3 meals a day + lodging. There are also economic sanctions for US companies doing business in Cuba - this is why there aren't any US airlines who fly regularly to Cuba.
You can get a special license to go to Cuba through OFAC. However, getting a license is very difficult. You need to fit under one of the categories, which include things like going on an approved educational or religious mission, going on an approved business trip or going to visit immediate family once every 3 years (meaning mother, father, children or siblings only).
That being said, many Americans go illegally. They go to Nassau and then fly to Cuba. Some also fly from Mexico. They ask the Cuban customs not to stamp their passport b/c they are American and Cuban customs complies. However, upon re-entering the US, a US customs officer may ask you if you visited any other countries besides the ones you report on your customs form (obviously you would include the country you fly back through, like Mexico or Nassau). If you say Cuba, you are open to sanctions. If you don't say Cuba, and then you are later found out, you are open to criminal punishment for lying to a federal officer.
I will post helpful links on this topic in a minute.

Also found this link, which specifically discusses the kind of excursion from Jamaica that you're talking about...and concludes that it is illegal...

I feel your pain. My Dad was born in Cuba and I have spent my whole life feeling like I'm not 100% sure who I am or where I come from. I ALMOST went there when I was 16, at which point the laws were different and it would've been possible for me to go back with my grandma as llong as I stayed in a relative's house not a hotel. My Dad ended up having emergency open heart surgery and I did not go. Since then,The Bush Administration tightened the laws like crazy.
My dream is to go there and buy my family's land back one day when the government doesn't own all property and when our country will permit me to travel there.

No you can't. Read the link I posted above - it is a government issued advisory explaining why those places are not sanctioned.

Yeah a lot of people go from Nassau, it's pretty common. But it's not 'legal' per se. When you go back to the US, you have to fill out the customs form and those people probably just write 'Nassau' under the field that says 'countries you visited during this trip.' Technically that's not legal either, but I don't know how frequently people actually get caught. But, if you do get caught, one of those links I posted describes the financial penalties you could suffer.

I'm jealous!! I wish I had the balls to go from Nassau. My Dad would murder me though, he says I will never set foot in Cuba as long as Castro is in power.

We will definitely be allowed one day. Castro has to die first... I could get really far into it, but I will spare everyone!!!!
