Dance Floor -- Lights or No Lights?

Dance Floor -- Lights or No Lights?

I'm having a DJ at the wedding (I like the original version of songs) and originally I decided not to have the light show because I thought it might look cheesy. We're using Starlight Express and the demo of their light show wasn't that bad, but I just worried about it looking too night club-y for FH's conservative family.

My question is: what does the dance floor look like without a light show? Is it just dimmed lights or does the hall do something usually? Is it boring without lights and not conducive to getting people to dance?

Second question: is a light show a little cheesy and not something to have at a formal wedding (we're not doing black tie, but it will be black tie optional).

Thanks!

I am sure everyone will have a different opinion on this.

Personally, I don't think a light show is elegant - its more sweet 16ish and less weddingly.

We are just getting the basic light package, and the only reason we got that is because they threw it in free.

i personally find that the best part of the wedding is the PARTY!! That said I think a light show is very conducive ... but i guess it depends on what ure going forh

I personally don't like light shows at weddings. If you like it though, then do it! I think, however, it depends on how the rest of your decorations are. For instance, if you're having a lot of candles, the light show might take away from the effect that you're trying to have (soft romantic candlelight).

I've been debating the same thing. I don't want it to feel like a sweet 16.

FTRBRIDE - Great point about the candles - I didn't even think of that!

we had the basic lighting from our Dj, and it was fine. no overkill.

FH and I are not getting lights, we both didn't really like the idea and thought it was kind of tacky. Also the wedding is during the day in a very bright room, so they would be a waste.

I don't really think it takes away from the elegance of an affair, I think it is just a matter of preference

Jennie- you can have lights without having a light show. This is what we're doing... we didn't want to do the whole light show, so he's just doing ambiance lighting to create the whole 'dance floor feeling'.
I kind of liked this because it was something in between. Hope that helps. :)

I don't like the light show thing...
My friend did and had it at her wedding.

something to think about...When we looked at some of the pics from the wedding great shots were RUINED by a big purple or red shot on someones face!!!

I am not into the light show either...I don't think it is elegant.

But...it is YOUR wedding and you should do what makes you happy...who cares what other people think?

That is soooooo true. Sometimes you see the light radiating in a non flattering way due to the flash. In person if done right it can be Ok..but the pics you just wont know till they come out.

I was planning to have one, but now I'm not sure... I don't want my pictures to be messed up. I have to talk to my photographer and DJ about this.

Oh, okay. I didn't know there was anything in between 'light show' and no lights. What does ambiance lighting look like? Thanks again!
