Delicate Issue...

Re: Delicate Issue...

Here it is:

The more I stare at it, it's not as bad as my first reaction. I just immediately saw a pointy hat and broom with it. I think a big problem is I'm comparing it to what my mom likes. My mom is looking at some really beautiful evening gowns in pretty colors, not typical MOB dresses.
I just think she's going to look bad compared to my mom in a dress like this. Also my colors are lavender and ivory so this is going to look off in pics.
Thanks for the advice ladies! I'm looking around to find dresses that I would like for her. Any recommendations for websites?

Maybe she should change the color and maybe no sleeves but a wrap instead?

Its not.....that bad
You think that she is going to look bad compared to your mom-how so? Not as glamorous? Not as good? Maybe this is something that she is comfortable in and isn't really an evening gown wearing type person? Maybe gently ask her if it comes in other colors?

I dont think it's that bad... however if you really hate it... I would just be up front with her... it's hard to put 'delicatley' but I would say something maybe along of the lines like it's not really my taste... or something like that. Good Luck

Maybe you can say that the dress is nice but you just don't know if it would be flattering to her...maybe suggest a different cut or something that will bring out how beautiful she is.....anything to pump her up will be the way to go with this one...GOOD LUCK! Post pics of the dress she wants...I am curious!

I agree with little34.
I think you should be honest, but in a nice way. Maybe say you think the dress is beautiful, but not too crazy about the sleeves. It's not that horrible to say and maybe you could send her a couple of dresses that might look similar but with much better sleeves and maybe a tad lighter in color. This way you are not putting her choice down totally. I'd really like to see a pic of the dress, though. Good luck, I know it's hard when it comes to FMIL, you don't want her to get the wrong idea of you.

I recently got an email from FMIL and she sent me a dress she's interested in for the wedding and told me to call her and give her my opinion. Well my opinion is that she's going to look like she's wearing a halloween costume! It looks like a sorceress dress! I really dislike everything about it...the style and the color. How can I politely say this? FH and I want her to look nice obviously. I would ideally like to go dress shopping with her and make suggestions, but she lives in MA and I'm in FL. FH agrees with my opinion so I was considering pawning the task off on him, but she asked my opinion not his.

i guess you could take a few different appraoches. one option would be to simply say that she might want something more summery for a july wedding--long sleeved chocolate brown smacks of fall.

OR you could try to focus on what would compliment her, and try to be constructive by suggesting dresses that you think might help her look her best (def via PHONE and not email, which can lead to major miscontruing).

OR you might focus on the idea that, while the dress might be a great choice for another event, the wedding calls for something specific. again, make suggestions. the fact that she asked your opinion is positive bc it means she cares enough to be respectful of your wishes.

good luck it is a delicate situation.

OK FH beat me to it. He basically told her she's not wearing that dress or that color. He said she didn't have a problem with it, so she wasn't that attached to the dress. I'm probably going to give her a call later and give her my opinion of what would look better on her. It's easier now that FH has paved the way.
