DIAMONDS

Re: DIAMONDS

Mine is an 'E' and it sparkles SO MUCH, i can't imagine what a 'D' looks like...i think the shape makes a big difference as well...round always reflects light the best!

Re: DIAMONDS

It all depends. D is 'colorless', but some people prefer the look of a warmer colored diamond on their hand, while others like colored diamonds. (I'm a big fan of brown and blue myself. ) I wouldn't say there's a 'best', but more of a personal preference.

In regards to clarity, I believe 'eyeclean' is important. Believe it or not, sometimes those non-visible inclusions can help you 'map' your diamond (if it's not branded).

Above all, I believe cut is the most important and I'm not refering to the shape, but more to the proportions, etc. It's all about the sparkle!

As for value, all diamonds appreciate over time, whether they're flawless/colorless or not. Let's say you have 2 diamonds. One is flawless and the other has a heavier carat weight, but they're both comparable in cost. 10 years from now, the flawless won't be worth anymore than the larger diamond. They'll both appreciate equally.

Can any of you girls actually identify a D diamond from an I diamond just by looking at it? I'd bet most jewelers can't, especially if the diamond is in a setting (and better yet, on someone's hand.)

Re: DIAMONDS

I've noticed that you can see a difference in color - only in the brightest light when the diamonds are right next to each other - only when the color grades are FAR apart. No one can honestly tell me they can see the difference between an E and a G with their naked eye!

Re: DIAMONDS

Thanks for clarifying the cut issue. When most people think of cut, the think, round, emerald, oval, etc., when this is not the case.

Personally speaking, I am a fan of colored diamonds and have one myself. Just goes to sho that beautiful diamonds don't always need to be white.

A pic similar to my e-ring, for those who have never seen a yellow diamond:

I have to agree that cut is just as important. I have a Hearts on Fire Dream cut. The sparkle is amazing

CUT! CUT! CUT!!

I'll echo the importance of cut.
I've seen a well cut H and I colored stones perform better (light performance) than a poorly cut Es and Fs.

Re: CUT! CUT! CUT!!

I drove my fiance crazy looking for my stone. I have a 2.27 emerald cut G, vs2. We looked for 5 months because at first I wanted nothing lower than an F and VS@. With an emerald cut you can see everything, so the clarity can be no less than vs2. In addition, I started researching cut and found out it is the most important part of the 4C's. The problem with emerald cuts is that there are no defined proportions out there the way there are for round stones. I was able to track down a gemologist named David --- I can't remember the last name now but if you type cut proportions on the internet he has them for all stones. I was going so crazy to find the ideal cut, F color and clarity that my fiance was ready to change his mind. My G stomne looks like an F - even the appraiser was sure it was an F so he appraised it at a high G color only because it needed to match the GIA specs. You should decide on what shape you want and then what color and clarity you FH can afford and then get the ideal cut dimensions and ask you jeweler for the specs. And don't let any jeweler tell you cut is not important. anyone who does has no clue what they are talking about!!!

Re: DIAMONDS

sorry so late. Mine is a VVS2 with E color. There are plenty of websites to find out the 'ideal cut'. Things to look at:

Cut
Color: D(best)-I(lowest you should go)
Clarity : VVS1 - SI1 (lowest)
If you go lower than SI2 can be
almost an 'I' rating
Table should be anywhere from 59-62%
Culet: none (if it has, then you might see a
black spot at the bottom)

there are other things but most important, don't go to an expensive jeweler, try the diamond district in NYC.

Most important make sure it is GIA certified - they are very strict when if comes to grading diamonds.
After you buy it, within a week take it to an appraiser (not your jeweler or a jeweler) - go to someone that just does appraisals - this is to make sure that the diamond matches the certification.
Never let them talk you into saving money with a non-certified diamond.
