Just curious. Most of FH and my friends and family are all out of state since with both moved here a couple years ago, so we haven't had an engagement party, well because no one would come, and we want to save our 'visit us requests' for wedding...
I was just wondering if anyone else is missing out on the engagement party festivities :(

I agree with you on giving gifts. If people want to give you gifts they will. I got a lot of gifts already and we didn't have a party.
me too

Re: Did anyone else not have an engagement party?
no party. I have to say sometimes i wish we did one but honestly we are not exactly well enough off to sport some cash for a party. That and FH and i do not live together so it would be hard getting presents at this time even though my aunt did give us a present anyway. My family was very nice with their cards and monetary gifts, fh side so far no cards or gifts but i hope that changes after the std's are sent out officially announcing the engagement.
So no party just a shower!

Dont want one I think its a huge waste of $$$$(IMO)........id rather spend the $$$$$ on the wedding or the honeymoon.

Re: Did anyone else not have an engagement party?
Nope. FH's cousins had a dinner in my favorite restaurant and then we went dancing. FH graduates from law school and I graduate from college this semester so I hope to have a graduation party for us rather than an engagement party.

Re: Did anyone else not have an engagement party?
I wanted to have an engagement party just to have one. I didn't know you gave gifts. But we never had one and I feel silly having one now. I may get family and BP together for dinner sometime but I won't necessarily call it an engagement party.

Re: Did anyone else not have an engagement party?
I am having one...We're not doing it for the gifts or money...For me when we got engaged, i just wanted to have it to celebrate with our family and friends...I havent met all his family since he has a HUUUUGE family, so its great that i will get to meet alot of them, plus although our parents have met and hungout a couple times already its good that the rest of our families will know eachother...So by the time the wedding comes along, they already have met and know eachother and will be more comfortable with eachother.
I told my parents that Fh and I will pay for it, but my parents said no way and to stop being stupid that they will take care of it...FH and I have contributed: FH paid for invitations took care of one of the installments(we had 2 installments and then two weeks before we pay the rest)...I myself have been paying for the favors, favor boxes, paper and supplies for menu's, table runners, all decorations for the tables, centerpieces, candles, well pay for the dj and all the other stuff.
My reason for doing this wasnt to ask for gifts or money...But ill tell you something i didnt realize when first planning this...After our e-party the money we get(since our guests normally dont give gifts) well be able to pay off some of our RH, which is what were doing with the money...We wont have to worry about payments for a little while, which is good since our payments are $3500 every two or three months and is gonna go up to $4500 every 2 months. This wasnt the reason for the party, but even after we got engaged our families were asking when were gonna have a party

not to sound like a horrendous horrible person.
BUT
we didnt have a party and i was amazed. . . our entire families ( even the people that didnt come to our dinner) gave us very generous gifts. . .even friends of the family. . . .and they helped SO MUCH to get the ball rolling on making payments!
it really is amazingly helpful!

You dont sound like a horrible person at all lol.
I mean yes people will give gifts and money at e-parties, dinner and even if you dont have anything, but doesnt mean the intention of doing any of those things is to get things out of people...We just want to celebrate with our closest friends and family...I just thought of it as being great to have a big party to celebrate our engagement.

yeha i always feel like i have to defend myself when it comes to money on this site so i jsut bashed myself first. . .
i enjoy going to e parties - honestly, the real reason i didnt have one. . .was i just didnt feel like DEALING with it lol and after the dinner i was glad bc so much stuff went wrong with the dinner - dont get me wrong it was GREAT but like, there was a 'misunderstanding' (cough cough) about the favors ( basically my FMIL got favors after my mom said she was getting them - called her and told her what she was buying, etc - and FMIL STILL went out and got favors and we had to cancel and reschedule due to the ONLY snow storm last year) lol so it was just pure laziness on my part
I know how you feel, but we shouldn't have to explain ourselves, everyone is different and has different views on things...I respect those who say they didnt want one or feel the need for one, or even that its a waste, i dont get offended, they should do what makes them happy and ill do what makes me happy...We dont all have to do all the exact same things. Just need to respect eachother for our differences and our different outlooks on things.
BUT i understand what you mean about problems, it hasnt been that easy planning this especially while trying to plan the wedding at the same time...Especially lately theres sooo much left to do and so little time lol...and yeah i know all about miscommunication lol

Re: Did anyone else not have an engagement party?
Im not from here and my family is all in maine, ohio, atlanta, seattle, and chicago and non of them ever heard about people doing these- we all thought it was for socialites! hehe. But if I'd had known it was a custom, I would have tried to have had one.

We aren't having one. FH thinks it's 'tacky' to have a 'fundraiser' for the wedding... LOL If we had the $$ I probably would have like a small one.

Re: Did anyone else not have an engagement party?
We got engaged in Punta cana, so my mother in law had one for us a few months later .. It's something nice i guess to announce your enagagement, but i've known couples who didn't have one.. It's all up to you.. If you have to pay for it then don't waste your money on it. hope this helps
