Difference in Platinum vs. White Gold?

I am so confused. I am looking at wedding bands and what is the major difference between the two? Is it worth it to get platinum? Any advice would be appreciated!!

Re: Difference in Platinum vs. White Gold?

From what I hear, platinum is softer and will scratch and stuff and the metal wears differently which will depend on your chemistry. I opted for white gold, it is a stronger metal. The backside of my ring has yellowed a little because of my hormones or whatever but not too bad. The platinum probably won't turn but may turn a little dullish silver color. Also, I am getting mine 'dipped' before the wedding so it is bright and shiny like new to match my band. I guess it's a matter of preference.

HTH- I don't know the true answer everyone has opinions. You can google some stuff too to help find the answers.

Re: Difference in Platinum vs. White Gold?

When my FH bought my e-ring, the jeweler told him that the major differences are (I'm just going off what FH told me, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong):

1- Cost (Platinum is more expensive)
2-Color (Platinum is the only truly 'white' metal...White gold is made to look white by being plated with other metals. As a result, it can turn yellowish over time. It can be 're-dipped' to look white again if this happens).
3-Strength (Platinum will scratch more easily than white gold which gives it a different luster. The major difference is the platinum will bend but not break. The jeweler told my FH that on a white gold e-ring, the prongs could break off if banged hard enough while a platinum prong would just bend)

It's my understanding that you should go the same metal for your wedding band as your e-ring. They may look the same now, but over time platinum and white gold will wear very differently and could end up looking mismatched.

Re: Difference in Platinum vs. White Gold?

My e-ring is platinum, and I loooove it! I haven't had any problems with scratching, and I am pretty rough with it! It's so true what they said about the prongs, I have banged this thing a thousand times and not a ding or a dong can be seen on my ring. Although it really could use a good polishing...

Eventually, we'd like to get titanium wedding bands, which are really strong but less expensive than platinum and would match my e-ring well.

Just another idea...

my ring is platinum and I have noticed on the back of my ring, there are scratches and scuffs, can those be buffed out?

Re: Difference in Platinum vs. White Gold?

my e-ring is platinum, but my wedding band is white-gold.

They are different colors. The platinum is more of a 'silver' whereas with the white gold, you can see the yellow tone in it.

Also, platinum 'settles'...my e-ring kind of shifted into the shape of my finger. But, my white gold wedding ring is 'wearing' down and I'll probably have all of the stones reset in platinum.

I'd say that both have scratched equally.

I was told that with platinum, you don't 'lose' any metal. When you see those scratches it just the misplacement of the metal. It doesn't actually get chipped off the ring. That's because platinum is the softest, so when you get platinum rebuffed, it just smooths it all back together.

Other metals, yes, when scratched, the metal is gone.

(This is what I was told)

Re: Difference in Platinum vs. White Gold?

the metal IS displaced, but you lose a layer every time you polish.

I worked with jewelry for a little bit

Re: Difference in Platinum vs. White Gold?

My e-ring is white gold. As you can see from the picture there is alot of detail to it. They were not able to do such detail in platinum, that is why I agreed to the white gold. I've never had a problem, but it seems more ornate features cannot be done in platinum as white gold is softer.

Re: Difference in Platinum vs. White Gold?

My e-ring is Platinum. I LOVE it! It's a little heavier than white gold (you can feel when you hold it in your hand... it doesn't feel any heavier to wear). I have a round stone in a square setting (4 prongs), so my jeweler told me that if I got white gold, there's a possibility of one of the prongs breaking, and I could lose the stone. Since platinum is stronger, I feel more confident that my diamond is safe! (knock on wood!)

So, should I get my platinum e-ring polished right before the wedding? It IS a bit scratched up.

Re: Difference in Platinum vs. White Gold?

Platinum is a lot more expensive. You should match whatever your engagement ring is though.

Re: Difference in Platinum vs. White Gold?

we were told the same basic things you've heard.....yes, white gold will eventually at some point yellow some, you get it redipped/plated...whatever they want to call it. platinum does scratch like crazy....(sigh, my poor ring looks kind of ragged a year later)....as long as you keep them up and continue having them professinoally maintained, they will look great...and honestly, unless you stare at them constantly, you won't be able to tell...most people won't be able to tell....the major decision factor we had was cost, we just couldn't afford 2 platinum rings, and my ering wasn't available in white gold.

and it really depends on the wear/use/abuse of your whtie gold.....i have a white gold necklace that i've had for over 3 years, still as 'white' as the day i got it and i've never had it polished or re-dipped....i have a white gold ring that i wear sometimes (i used to wear it more) and it is yellow on the bottom only after 1.5 years...i should get it redipped, but no one can see it....

everyone will have the same thing to say b/c all jewelers (at least honest ones) say the same thing....in the end, it's a choice usually made on preference and cost.
(ie-i wanted a sparkly diamond band to match my sparkly ering....FH couldn't afford to buy the same ring in platinum, so they are 'mis-matched.')

Re: Difference in Platinum vs. White Gold?

Hmmm.. I think I am leaning towards platinum. My e-ring is platinum so I want them to look similar and I work with my hands alot so it would most likely ware more for me. Unfortunately FH is dead set on getting platinum for his so we'll have to figure out how to afford 2 more platinum rings

Thanks so much for all your help!!!

Re: Difference in Platinum vs. White Gold?

My fiance gave me a platinum ring. I was looking into wedding bands and found out that platinum is 4x as expensive as gold. From a separate jeweler I found out that White gold is really yellow gold dipped in a white metal overlay. This overlay eventually wears off if you wear it every day and would need to be re-dipped.

I struggled with the cost myself but then decided I am going to wear this the rest of my life - splurge on the platinum.
