I don't think that there will be any way to avoid a draft. There doesn't seem like there is an end to this war in the near future and it seems as though it is looking to turn out like another Viet Nam. If it lasts for manyyears, I doubt many people will volunteer for a war like this and a draft will be inevitable. JMO.

There were talks about a draft before Sept 11th and this war. The rates for the military were dropping becasue they made changes to OUR retirement plans. Many want to think its the war that started it but in actuality it is something that was being knocked back and forth before then.
And I am one of the statistics..the AF changed their retirement rates and most of the first timers did not re-enlist because they didnt think making it a career would pay off. So no..the war is not the reason why draft talks came about. But its a reason why its getting so much possibility..media spin as usual.

DH said he heard on the radio that anyone with 12 and 13 year old children should be prepared for a draft in the future, because there is no end in sight to this war.
This really worries me because I have a 12 year old stepson!!![]()
And this really makes me question whether I want to have any children of my own, so that one day they may be forced into a war.
I just think it is soooo wrong!!!![]()

I dont beleive in a draft just for a war..no.
But I didnt want you to think that its the only reason why Draft talk surfaced either.
Would you feel any differently about it if it were not war time?

They are laying off people from the armed forces as we speak...how can their be a draft?
Even when the draft exsisted,,,you could go into any area of the armed forces ... So unless they are going to be drafting into the army or marines specifically...which i doubt

No, I dont think there will be either. Certainly not in the next 4 years. Bush would not after the flack on the war he's gotten implement a draft. Who knows about the future...but I doubt it.

no way, as far as enlistment goes just after 9-11 enlistment went WAY UP, plus Lenny and many of his friends who are coming up on the end of their contracts are being offered HUGE re enlistment bonuses. Some are taking them. One guy I know did one term in Afghanistan and is on his second in Iraq because of the money that was thrown at him. Many of the men in our military now are so gung ho over this that they are going to keep re-enlisting. Lennys friend was only back in the states three months before he volunterred to go back to Iraq, many feel it is their duty and that they 'belong there' *brandons very words*
Last time I talked to the man who recruited Lenny he said enlistment was fine in his office,anyhow and seemed to be fine all around for the USMC.

yeah after Sept 11th people enlisted like crazy..some regret it and some are still pumped up. But the bonus ae only for certain jobs though.

Not in the next 4 years, but anything is possible. How many soldiers have died already? And how much longer will this war go on? A war that for all we know can go on for another 4 years because Bush doesn't look to be interested in ending it anytime soon.

some jobs have too many people in them..we have two jobs in the military..fighting for our country and a regular job just like civilians would have outside the military. Sometime too many people are in one career field or they find a career field is better outsourced to a private contractor so they offer the option of early out or cross training into a more needed job..Many choose to get an early out.

in what capacity did your cousin serve?
the situation over there is not good. i would think more $$$ and resources would need to be invested to 'get the job done', however there is the 'cut and run' option as well. time will tell...
