Does your FMIL...

Original post by bride2bebe

Irritate you?

Like, really annoy you with the things she says and does to the point where it's just uncomfortable for you?

Is it just me or do other brides out there feel the same way?

It's just so difficult for me to get past this lately...
it's really bothering me! She wants to make it all about her and I am about to explode!

How do I deal? It's so hard to not blow up!

I spent my whole therapy appointment today talking (read: stressing and complaining) about FMIL...and its not a CHEAP session either!!

So...yeah. Just a little. But its more the fact that she doesn't seem to care about me or my feelings, she's not really trying to take over our wedding...she doesn't even seem to really care that we are even getting married

Re: Does your FMIL...

Thankfully she lives in FL, but FH's bros' wives get the full on Outlaw treatment. She has 3 sons and no one is good enough for any of them...I've been fortunate and she loves me compared to FH's ex. Still, I am happy she lives in another state so she can't meddle as much as she did in the past with my FSILs.

As for someone being so harsh and rude to me - FMIL or not, esp if FH does not acknowledge it... I have to admit, I use to let it go. Now I live by the Golden Rule, do unto others....blah blah. If they're being obnoxious, give it right back..ie... you wish you could compete. lol.... it works. They are shocked and it doesn't register at first. Then it kinda settles in and they realize (sometimes) that it was rude and they left themselves open to a comeback. Make it sarcastic and check your tone, but get your point across with a smile. She may back down if she thinks you may return the venom in public and embarass her. Its currently working for me. A few oblivious people didn't realize they were rude until I came back at them... they know it isn't in my character... they immediately think its something they did. One person however asked me why I was so rude unjustly and if I woke up on the wrong side of the bed... I simply told them... i thought that is how you want to be treated. You say this and do this, which is extremely cruel, so I thought you wanted to be treated with the same manner. I give what I get... smiled and walked away.

It isn't for everyone....and made me uncomfortbale, but I had it with some ppl and it just wan't worth stressing about. Believe this, it improved my relationships with all of them. Honestly. There is a new respect and they don't disregard my feelings. I won't let them.

I hope it gets better for you. It worked for a few ppl I know.

This trend is too funny. I love it. If it wasn't public I would tell my story. All I can say is :

Well, I saw her tonight, ( FMIL) and was compelled to log on and find this thread....

At dinner, she said to me, and I quote ' Don;t go too crazy trying to find the perfect dress. After all you are the bride, and don't want too much bling'

THEN goes on to say that she would like to wear a bright coral colored ONE SHOULDER strap dress....Ugh. She will do anything to put the attention on herself!

Oh, and she also referred to it as 'my Wedding'.

MY meaning hers.

Wacko. I laugh. See? Laugh. If not, my blood pressure rises, and that is no good for anyone!!

You have me rolling on the floor. Mine is the same way. trying to control my wedding which looks more like hers.

I also think my FMIL is going to wear something redic. IDK what your FMIL looks like but if she looks like mine I would say she will be getting attention bc she will look redic! A one stap coral dress IMO would not look good on someone after a certain age unless they had a great body but even still it is a younger person look! People will look at talk and she will not be feeling the attention she was hoping for! lol

Oh, I totally feel your pain! Mine annoys the cr@p out of me! But even her own family has told me she is just a mean and nasty woman! Oh, the stories I could tell and we aren't even married yet!

Ignore her, as my mom says to me, people only have as much power as you give them. I need to take that advice myself, cause everytime i'm near her, she does something to make my blood boil!

I can't belive yours said she is competeing with you!!!! How could she compete with the bride and why would she want too? That's just sick in my opinion. Hang in there, there are a bunch of us on here that have FMIL's from H@ll!

I really like this- 'People have as much power as you give them'

I saw FMIL last night and definately kept that advice in mind...only a mother could come up with something like that!

It feels really good to know I'm not alone.
I was beginning to think that there was a really big underlying family issue with us here....but, it seems like in-laws cause troubles for a majority of us...

Re: Does your FMIL...

My FMIL when we got engaged and it was all about me and FH she decided to get a boob job then when nobody paid attention to her she decied recently to get another one stating they were not perfect then whenever we talk about the wedding she changes the conversation. My parents paid for our Engagement Pary and my FIL didnt even give us a gift or anything they just showed up . My FFIL is very controlling and Im very independent and we dont get along that much and with the wedding he trys to put his 2cents in and I have to kindly tell him to but out. When I asked my fmil for addresses to send out the save the dates you would have thought I was asking the woman to give me a million dollors. I asked her for 4days and she would say okay later then finally I said to FH your family is not invited unless you get them for me and he went and called his aunt for them. My fmil is so selfish and childish. I learned to not pay attention to her anymore since Ive known her since I was 3yrs old you think she would be kinder to me. If we are not talking about the wedding she is great we go out shopping together and get along really well she is just soo jelous.

yes she does... and so i avoid her. At all costs. Like she has the plague. We dont like each other much. Actually i probably like her more then she likes me... I dont get along with FHs sisters either. We are from two different worlds. I have posted about them before lol

Man oh man do I understand about FH sister 'hater' status. She is way older with no kids, no man, and she has nothing better to do but hate on me because I am of a different religion as her. She has nothing better to do so I just avoid her as well. As sor FMIL she is sweet but I know she thinks I am high maintenance and a bit bougie but who cares. As long as she remains cordial I can live with that. Nice thread! I totally feel you. Hang in there!

I've had my moments with my FMIL, but not too many. I do have occasions where I just want to scream but we get along more than we have disagreements.

It's really hard to stay cool in those moments; you just have to try your hardest to be the better person. Because you don't want it to be awkward all the time.

You are definately not alone, and my mom is exactly right with her advice, but it's really hard for me to take it! I give you so much credit if you were able to keep that in mind when you saw your FMIL. Another thing my mom says when FMIL is making me crazy is' She is not important, why are you making her important?' We'll help each other with our FMIL's from H@ll( that's how I refer to mine!

I refer to mine as that too!

Although she isn't all bad, all the time.

She definately has her moments where she is so nice...it's just those times where she won't accpet my opinion, won't allow me to speak my mind, thinks she knows best, and says ridiculous things!

All I want is to be treated equally, to be given a fair chance and to be able to speak my mind the way I do with my family...I'm not asking for world peace! jeez!
