I'm livid. My honeymoon is ruined. And I feel like it is impossible for me and FH top travel to Mexico in June w this deathly flu in Mexico City.
Now we will loose our 900 air and have to look elsewhere. This *****
Any other Mexico honeymooners concerned?

We're stopping in Cozumel on a cruise in 2 weeks and I'm slightly nervous but I also think the deaths are due to limited access to health care. Just make sure you get a recommendation for a good doctor in the area you'll be and if you feel under the weather, head right over there. And if you're staying in a resort, I'm sure they're on full alert right now and will have some information for you because it's a PR and customer service issue for them to put you at ease.
ITA .. the deaths have been attributed to the fact that those ppl did NOT seek medical assistance until they were VERY sick. as of now we aren't making any rash decisions until there is more accurate information.

Re: Effin Swine Flu in Mexico!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi everyone, just wanted to give you guys my take on this as an epidemiologist with a master's degree in public health (disclaimer: I am not involved with the investigation).
Right now it is very unclear what will happen... this can easily become a pandemic given how quickly it is spreading from human to human (no longer has anything to do with playing with pigs) or it can stop if appropriate measures are implemented. The CDC and WHO are taking this very seriously but there is no way to know what happen.
If your honeymoon is in the few weeks, I would suggest canceling it (given the current travel warnings, you should be able to get your money back without paying fees) even if it is in another area of Mexico (the kids from St. Francis were in Cancun not Mexico City). Any travel to affected areas will just increase the dangers of global spread for everyone. If your honeymoon is more than a month from now, I would wait it out and see what happens. They should know a lot more about the virus and how it is spreading in the coming weeks.
Let me know if you have any questions, I would be happy to try to answer.
Good luck!!!

We are supposed to leave May 17th. as of right now we aren't changing our plans.. i'd like to wait until there is more information. either way, i e-mailed my TA to find out what our options are should we want to change our plans. don't freak yet, just find out what your options are and what your TA can do.
ugh.... we arn't going until Oct so I'm hoping it will be under control by then... and right after we just got hooked up with a great deal too!

Kids who go to St. Francis Prep in Queens went down there and brought it here - I heard no school there on Monday and Tuesday - so scary
I know!! I heard about this too... its so scary!!! Someone at that school went to vacation in Mexico and came back with it. The government is now going to basically check all US people coming back into the state after a trip to Mexico.. I dont think i would want to worry about this on my HM.. So I would just change it IMHO

I'm a nurse, and there is no way I'd be traveling there right now! It's too risky IMO. And there is a real danger of global spread, like you said. Yes, getting prompt medical treatment is key, but do you know if you will get GOOD medical treatment where you are going????? probably not like you would get here at home. TOO RISKY!

Re: Effin Swine Flu in Mexico!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Check out the CDC, they have information on the swine flu, and traveling. They are not advising anyone to cancel travel plans now, and you may be in the clear by the time your trip is scheduled. To be safe, maybe you would like to purchase travel insurance? I am sure you can re-schedule the trip if necessary, or maybe switch it to another location owned by the same hotel brand?
By then, you will probably be able to get a vaccine or to get the meds as a precaution before you go. I wouldn't panic yet.

Re: Effin Swine Flu in Mexico!!!!!!!!!!!!!
an interesting map that shows where it has come up... even though the student got it in cancun, there is no other reported cases there???
I hope I am not hated for this, but... Going to Mexico and risking all that is going on... flu and drug wars is not worth the money IMO. my BIL got stuck in a mexican hospital after getting sick on a cruise and they have dirt floors, they don't sanitize their equipment, and they gave him his prescription in a urine cup. This was a hospital in a tourist spot on mexico's west coast. This is the health care you will most likely receive if you do happen to get the swine flue b/c I don't think the US will let you travel back here (or maybe they will and they will quarentine you. I'm not sure). Secondly, this flu is spreading FAST. If it gets too much worse they are talking about stopping travel back and forth. I'm not saying it WILL happen, but I would be afraid it might and I would get stuck in Mexico. Since the airlines are allowing you to rebook without penalities, I would at least look into it. Why not go somewhere without the risk? If you do get the swine flu, I imagine your hospital bills will be a lot more costly than the money you may lose on a resort.

Re: Effin Swine Flu in Mexico!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I heard on the news last night that the airlines are allowing people to change their tickets to Mexico without penalty or fee due to the flu virus. I would also call the resor and see if at the very least they can extend a credit for you to use another time in light of the swine flu fact.
Good luck

According to this map, it is on five continents within a week!!! And keep in mind this is only the confirmed cases; many more go unreported. I get the chills just looking at this.
