Engaged and not definite on the date....How long did it take?

Ok, so my FH (look, i got the lingo) asked me to marry him May 31, 2006 because he wanted to be special and memorable and knew it would be our last vacation probably until our honeymoon. I am a full time student with a new part time job and he just started a new job and is juggling 2 jobs now. We know that I can not save FOR REAL until after i graduate BUT I will start saving a little now...and he can save but he definitely cant pay for everything on his own.
That is the background information....SO here is my question.
How long did you wait to set a date for your wedding? We are saying 11-6-09 (our 6 yr anniversary) but we both don't want to wait that long. We also don't want to fall into debt because of planning a wedding sooner than that.
How do you deal with people saying, 'OH MY GOD, You dont have a date yet?'
This is long but I was just wondering what all you brides-to-be thought.. <- doesnt this face look like its saying 'Ay-o'

Aww Diane...don't worry...I wasn't sure at first either...we knew we wanted a fall/winter wedding but we thought if we did 06 it would be way too soon. But of course you get people asking - like the day after we got engaged - if we set a date yet!! Sorry I didn't go to halls on Christmas Eve!! Anyway - it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks except for you and Jesse. Have fun planning and don't get stressed or obsessed it just isn't worth it!

Congrats! I've gone through the same thing., Just be happy, enjoy it, and get married when you're ready. it'll go by quickly anyway. I got engaged in Jan '04, planned a Dec 06 wedding, now postponing for maybe 2008. it's hard. People don't 'get it' but you're in love, you're an adorable couple, and you'll get married when it's right. people can ask all the questions they want when they are willing to pay the bill!

yeah we got engaged april 22 2006 & our wedding is not until june 21 2008 - everyone kept asking why are u waiting 2 years- believe me if i could get married next year i would- but anyways u will see how time will fly!!!

<3 We have decided to basically wait until I graduate in the spring to see where our money stands. We will then book a date. For now, it will be about us celebrating then enjoying the engagement!
you guys make me feel so sane (along with my friends) when others make me feel that I am insane!

We got engaged August of 2004 and we picked our hall and set the day on New Years Day 2005... so it tooks us 5 months
