engagement ring drama

Original post by luvabul

Since were all engaged here this topic was kinda interesting to me. When i got engaged i received a 1.5 carat tiffany solitaire with tapered baguettes ...with stunning specs. Clarity, color were great. my ring is a real sparkler . However a few of my friends who recently got engaged received at 2+ carat ring, sure the rock is big, but the quality just seems poor. I absolutely love the ring FH chose for me and i hate when someone comments that the center stone couldve been bigger, or i should upgrade later since its small...one girl bluntly asked me howcome ur fiance didnt get u something bigger?? ... [didnt even congratulate me that i got engaged]

it just makes me so mad! my ring now has sentimental value to me, and like someone else on a previous thread said id rather wear a small diamond than have a piece of poo on my finger.!!

not for nothing...but ppl like that should have to shampoo my dog's dirty crack.

OMG! I just spit water all over my computer! that was hysterical

My ring is .5 carat, but the clarity and quality are near perfect. FH wanted to get a ring for the quality of the diamond, not the size.

I would not trade my ring for the world. One of his co-workers asked, 'Why such a small diamond?' I think that kind of questioning ranks up there with the 'So you just got married, now when are you having kids?' line of questioning.

Re: engagement ring drama

ignore people's stupid comments....if u love ur ring that's ALL that matters - BOTTOM LINE. and believe me...1.5 is PLENTY big! people will be people and say stupid things...they're probably just jealous that yours is from Tiffany's!!!! (haha!) anyways, enjoy ur georgous sparkling rock & tell anyone that has something to say to shove it :)

Big or small..... sparkly or cloudy.... DOESN'T MATTER!

The ring is a symbol that someone wants to spend the rest of their life with you... that should be enough!

my thoughts exactly. i wont lie though, i check out other girls rings but only to see styles. my ring is just sparkly enough, not too big, not too small, it's just right. just like my DH to me, just right!!! be glad God has blessed you with love, none of the other stuff should matter.

Re: engagement ring drama

My feeling about the whole situation is that anytime we compare what we have with other people, we end up feeling bad cause there'll always be someone with a nicer body, nicer car, bigger house, better job, etc... but you know what, being happy isn't about getting what you think you want but in loving what you already have (cheesy but true), so I think every woman should be proud of the ring she has because it's a symbol to the whole world that someone loves you enough to want to spend the rest of their life with you. End of story. And if anyone tells you there's something wrong with your ring, they're just bitter, rude, and jealous, so don't feel bad telling them off.

Re: engagement ring drama

My friends rings range in size from about .5 carats to a bit over 2.5 carats. The color, cut and clarity also vary. Some are heirlooms, some are new.

What I honestly believe is that each of my friends has a ring that is perfect for her. Each of them is very happy with her setting and stone. Also, if we want to just talk dollars, the girl with the biggest is not necessarily the wealthiest. No matter what the size of their diamonds (or the size of their homes or their bank accounts), I am thankful that they are all in great relationships.

I'm not saying that it's bad to talk about diamonds and diamond size. That can be fun. But it is AWFUL to value another person based on that!!!

1.5 ct to me is a huge ring. Mine is much smaller. No one has ever said such a rude comment as you have gotten though. Now I wonder what people must think about my ring, if people are commented on a 1.5 ct ring.

People always have there opinions, but I guess you just have to ignore them.

omg i sooooo agree with u, that happened to me a few times getting in a discussion with a few girls. whatever girl, i agree people like that can be dealt with two ways, IGNORED or TELL them Off....

she was probably just jealous of ur ring. as far as the other girl who bought jealousy up Meaghan729 ... i think ur way off, i think luvabul was just venting about how their are such shallow girls who try to make others feel bad. JMO!

I know how you feel. My FI and I went window shopping a few times and he still bought the wrong style ring.

I wanted a different style, metal and a bit bigger. Mine is 3 stones and 3 small channel set stones on each side (9 altogether) and 1.5 carets. My FI was so clueless that he went to Zales.

He was roped in by the gimmick. It has hearts on it and says 'past present and future' with too other small diamonds inside the the band. He didn't even ask about color or clarity.--men--lol

I was a bit disappointed at first because I felt like once again he didn't listen to me, I felt like he got a bit ripped off by Zales, I also felt like the ring was too common and that the color/clarity wasn't the best.

You know what, now I love it!
It has really grown on me because it does symbolize us.
I work with these women with HUGE rocks. They all say things like 'It's so cute and he should have gotten a bigger stone' 'That's supposed to be an anniversary ring'
What the hell does cute mean?? I don't think it's that small.
They are so rude! That is what my FI could afford at the time. I would never say that to someone.

Though I wish he would have listened to my taste a bit more and even though I feel like he got ripped off, I look at it now and smile.

I smile because it repsresents us! He loved the ring because of what it says and every time I look it it it reminds me of the person he is. His flaws and all! It reminds me of what I love about him.

So now I am picking out the band to make sure there are no problems. It will be a bit of an upgrade too!

So screw all those girls! People are even making nasty comments about my Fall wedding decor. It never ceases to amaze me how people can be so rude! Can't you just be happy for me and just think not my taste, but good for you?????

Your ring to probably gorgeous and it is a symbol of love from your FH. Enjoy it!

I guess I should be grateful he didn't get me a pear shaped gold ring! (sorry ladies if that is what you like.. Just not my taste)
Good Luck!

I guarantee I have one of the smaller center stones of all the girls on LIW. It is .59 (I just checked the GIA certificate). It was what my DH could afford and I love it. I actually have NEVER had anyone say anything about the size. That's just really rude. Do I get jealous of other girls? Yes and no...while I would never change my ring or upgrade it, if we ever came into some money I wouldn't turn down an anniversary ring

Don't listen to other people's comments. Because someone who would make that kind of comment is just not worth the effort.

actually my centre stone is smaller .5. let's create drama over whose ring is smaller....

i have two side baguettes and the TW is .69. that number WASNT an accident.....

i have really small hands, size 4.5. i tried on bigger stones and they looked too big, if that is even possible. when we were looking DH had no money, he wasnt working and still in university. he afforded what he could. i am really happy, b/c i know he spent his entire life savings for a ring for me and to me that is more special than any piece of carbon.

there were so many factors when we got engaged that money was a really big thing, b/c we didnt have any. b/c of immigration issues we got married a year before we intended. we also wanted to make sure we had enough money so that i could fly home and see my family twice a year (we live in sydney). at the time we werent working and didnt want to spend money we didnt have. now, we both have good jobs and are financially secure. last on our list was a ring. we wanted other things first. i am really happy with the size of my ring, b/c there is more of a sentimental value to it- it reminds me of the time when we got engaged- i cant quite put it into words.

i dont get upset if and when people say anything about the size. i havent heard anything yet. i have other things in my life that make me happy.

Re: engagement ring drama

my FH gave me a ring that he thought i would love. He had a limited budget, and for once listened to what i had to say.

I told him i wanted a princess cut stone, and i didn't care what size or clarity or anything, just as long as it was square. Size is not nearly as important as what the ring means, it symbolizes our love and commitment to one another. Its not worth spending more than you can afford with so many other expenses involved in getting married.

my ring is beautiful, my ring is special to me, and it doesn't matter how big or small it is, its mine and so is he!

everyone has different priorities... whether it's where you bought it to how big the stone is... my friend has a 1 ct. tiffany lucida and the first thing she says is 'its from tiffanys' to kind of back up the size, who knows, I never even asked my FH how many carats my ring was or where he bought it.. it never mattered to me

3 stone rings are great. I have a friend who did get one as an anniversary ring. I wasn't thinking and I said something to her about how a lot of people get those when they get engaged. I felt so bad after I realized what I said. She probably thought I was implying that she should not have had to wait 10 years. At least I realized that I said something insensitive. It is a beautiful ring and now I have to wonder if she knows that I did not want to insult her or the ring. Her ring is gorgeous. I am sure yours is too.

Re: engagement ring drama

wow people have no filter on appropriateness!!! i would NEVER tell someone that their ring was small -
before i was engaged i used say i better get a huge rock since i waited so long for it - my neighbor pointed out to me that the ring is just a ring, thats not what matters! I absolutely adore my ring because FH picked it out himself with no help and it is sooooooo me!

If you love your ring - why change it because of what other people think?

I agree!!! Size and quality are not the point and really shouldnt matter. The ring is there as a symbol of your love.

When my FH went ring shopping he told the jeweler what I wanted- a ring that is unique, lots of side stones and a good quality round center stone. I LOVE my ring and my center stone isn't the largest of other's, but I know that FH picked out a GORGEOUS ring that I love.

If people have those nasty comments to you just tell them that you love your ring and that size doesn't matter, it's the love behind it that does.

Re: engagement ring drama

I'm glad this thread came up. A few weeks (months?) ago there was a 'post the size of your ring' thread and everyone's rings were pretty big.

Mine is a .60 TCW 3 stone ring, and I didn't post out of fear of what people would think.... but, I LOVE it..and never even knew that other girls my age get HUGE rocks!

last weekend fH and I went to visit a videographer and when we left he said

'After watching all the girls on those videos and seeing their huge rings, I feel like 'wow, I really messed up!''

I assured him that the ring doesn't mean anything...its just a symbolic thing...what matters is that he wants to spend the rest of his life with me.

Someday, if we can afford it, he wants to buy me something bigger...but I'm not even sure I'll want it.
