engagement ring drama

Original post by luvabul

Since were all engaged here this topic was kinda interesting to me. When i got engaged i received a 1.5 carat tiffany solitaire with tapered baguettes ...with stunning specs. Clarity, color were great. my ring is a real sparkler . However a few of my friends who recently got engaged received at 2+ carat ring, sure the rock is big, but the quality just seems poor. I absolutely love the ring FH chose for me and i hate when someone comments that the center stone couldve been bigger, or i should upgrade later since its small...one girl bluntly asked me howcome ur fiance didnt get u something bigger?? ... [didnt even congratulate me that i got engaged]

it just makes me so mad! my ring now has sentimental value to me, and like someone else on a previous thread said id rather wear a small diamond than have a piece of poo on my finger.!!

I am sure my e ring is less than a carat, I have no idea what it is.

You know the size of the stone is not the important thing in life. My parents have been married 35 years and my mom doesn't have an e ring and they are the happiest couple I know.

Honestly, I've seen some rings that are bigger than 2 and i think they are just too much! Your size if perfect, and the ring souds so pretty. They always say you should go for quality over size when it comes to diamonds, so it seems like your friends were just interested in size. I would much rather a nicer diamond than a bigger one. I wouldn't worry or listen to them when they ask you petty questions, like why didn't you get a bigger one. That's just so wrong.

I personally would rather have quality over quantity of size. I absolutely love my ring and it is a 1.02 carat excellent stone. I would never even think of trading it in. Even 20 years down the road, if I am well off, I still would not change it b/c it is sentimental and shows where you came from.

I love it and it does not matter what other people think. It sounds like you are happy with your diamond and I would be too. Just b/c osomeone else has a larger diamond does not mean that their quality is the greatest and I would just ignore what they say.

HTH..

I think it's all about the quality of the stone... FH's best friend got his fiance a ring that is a little bigger than mine but the quality is no where near the same. I think it's all about the sparkle and the shine. I am proud of the ring that FH bought me. I love it and would never trade it for anything.

The size of an ering is honestly irrelavant in so many ways. The same way about weddings - you could spend 60,000 on a wedding and include the whole nine yards (i.e. petal cones, 17 chocolate fountains, tear packs, votive place card holders, table menus, signature drinks, etc) but it means very little.

I prefer to concentrate on the marriage instead of my ering (which is gorgeous and completely my taste) and the reception (which suites me just fine). I just like to keep my priorities in order. Im not materialistic - I'm in love and cannot wait to live my life with him even if its 'happy scrappy' to other people. I could care less about the opinions of others.

I know how you feel. My FI and I went window shopping a few times and he still bought the wrong style ring.

I wanted a different style, metal and a bit bigger. Mine is 3 stones and 3 small channel set stones on each side (9 altogether) and 1.5 carets. My FI was so clueless that he went to Zales.

He was roped in by the gimmick. It has hearts on it and says 'past present and future' with too other small diamonds inside the the band. He didn't even ask about color or clarity.--men--lol

I was a bit disappointed at first because I felt like once again he didn't listen to me, I felt like he got a bit ripped off by Zales, I also felt like the ring was too common and that the color/clarity wasn't the best.

You know what, now I love it!
It has really grown on me because it does symbolize us.
I work with these women with HUGE rocks. They all say things like 'It's so cute and he should have gotten a bigger stone' 'That's supposed to be an anniversary ring'
What the hell does cute mean?? I don't think it's that small.
They are so rude! That is what my FI could afford at the time. I would never say that to someone.

Though I wish he would have listened to my taste a bit more and even though I feel like he got ripped off, I look at it now and smile.

I smile because it repsresents us! He loved the ring because of what it says and every time I look it it it reminds me of the person he is. His flaws and all! It reminds me of what I love about him.

So now I am picking out the band to make sure there are no problems. It will be a bit of an upgrade too!

So screw all those girls! People are even making nasty comments about my Fall wedding decor. It never ceases to amaze me how people can be so rude! Can't you just be happy for me and just think not my taste, but good for you?????

Your ring to probably gorgeous and it is a symbol of love from your FH. Enjoy it!

I guess I should be grateful he didn't get me a pear shaped gold ring! (sorry ladies if that is what you like.. Just not my taste)
Good Luck!

This answer is a prime example to the original post. While trying to add her 2 cents and tell her story.. she might actually offend people who got their ring from Zales

My ring is from ZALES... so should I get offended? NOPE.... I don't care. I love my ring

A ring is just a material symbol of the love and the life your fh is going to give you. I really dont know anything about diamonds. I myself have a 3 diamond ring but like I said who cares about the quality, cut or clarity of the diamond. I care about my fh more than any silly ring he could give me. If he couldnt afford a ring I would still take him as my husband. It is the person that matters not the ring.

the next time someone asks why your ring is so small, just say: 'So when I punch you in the face, the scar won't be so big. . . .I am thinking of you here!'

people are awful, i once met a bride with a huge GORGEOUS ring, and she said that people judged her bc her ring was too big, saying that she shouldn't have 'let' him get it for her and making comments like 'i see why you are with him' . . . some people are never happy! as long as you are happy that is all that matters

Re: engagement ring drama

Hi,
Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone. I meant it more like my FI went to the first place around the corner from his job when he works near the diamond district!
I was more commenting on the fact that he didn't even bother to do research. That was the only place he went to. He didn't ask the questions you should ask either. He did even comparison shop for price etc. I always thought buying a diamond was an investment.

I originally felt that some of the rings in Zales were very commercial for MY taste, but still pretty. They have a small selection--that's all. There is nothing wrong with Zales. I am probably getting my band from there.
My intention was just to comment on the fact that my FI didn't listen to me and didn't take the time to research. It is funny the way some men operate.

I love my ring and the fact that my FI did what he thought was his best. He tried and it is a symbol of us.

What I thought was so commercial, I have actually gotten compliments on along with the rude comments.
Once again, sorry if my 2 cents offended anyone!
Happy ring wearing!

All is forgiven?????

Thanks, it's hard to not 'offend ' people. We all carry a bag of our own insecurites and we may be offended when it was never the other person's intention.

The person who told me that said it in a condesending way though. She said 'That's an anniverary ring. Why did he get you that?'

I am sure your friend didn't think you were being mean.

I am always worried about saying something to offend someone. Even with my post someone pointed out hat I could have.--Didn't even realize!!!

Good Luck!

Re: engagement ring drama

I was not offended by your post. It was just that you somehow were putting Zales down for their quality. Lots of girls like me have a ring from Zales. So that would have implied that my ring was not of quality and that DH overpaid. While I understood what you meant and was not offended at all, it was reminding of the original post and people who make comments about rings.

No hard feelings at all!!!!

Re: engagement ring drama

Hi,
Well for some reason my FI told me the whole ring buying story and I felt that he did get a bit ripped off. He sort of feels that way too because he didn't shop around. Every piece of jewelry is different though and not everyone gets ripped off who goes to Zales. This was just my case.

I do get what you are saying, but I thought the original post was about intentional rude comments.

I totally see what you mean though.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Re: engagement ring drama

Some people are so rude!! My e-ring has a 0.81 center stone with 5 small sidestones on each side (so the whole ring is about 1ct), but like some of the other girls my fingers are small and I work in the hospital so I have gloves on and off all day. When we went window shopping I knew that I would want to wear my ring ALL the time and not have to worry about losing it in the trash. So the only thing I told DH was that I wanted a small stone and a low setting and he ended up picking out a perfect ring for me. I can wear my ring everyday and as much as I love looking at other peoples rings, I would never trade mine for the world. A lot of the people who make these rude comments are just insecure and not worth your time of day

DH is always 'negociating'... so I don't have to worry about him overpaying.

I love my ring.... because of what it represents. I think it's gorgeous, becuase FH picked it out by himself.... and knows me well enough to understand my style.

I've had interesting comments on my ring... materialistic yet polite people don't comment... becuase they obvbiously think it isn't ornate or expensive enough.... People who are jealous that I'm engaged mutter that the stone is small, and married/competitive women are obsessed with whether the metal is platinum or white gold, and compare it to their ring which is platinum, or is 'only' white gold....

this is all human nature.... to compete, be envious, be nasty..... The true friends think its gorgeous for the same reason I do.... becuase I'm really happy in my relationship and I know I found the right one.... After all, it's a symbol of a union.... it shouldn't be a symbol of wealth....
