engagement ring HELP!

engagement ring HELP!

Hey girls. I have lurked on this board for awhile. Anyway, my boyfriend and I have been talking about getting married for awhile now, and I figure the wedding will be in 2010 so I thought I'd post here.

I need help with the engagement ring. I am not a jewelry person at all. I actually didn't even think i wanted a diamond until we went looking last night for rings. I don't like the diamond industry, and was looking for an aquamarine but it seems impossible to find anything without diamonds on the side, so I might just give in and get a diamond.

hahah I told him he can get me a cc, but he refuses hahah.

Anyway, since I don't know much about diamonds or what I want I figured you all could give me some help. One if anyone knows where I could find a nice ring without diamonds that would be awesome.

Two, I know I want princess cut. I thought I liked solitary, but after looking yesterday, I think I like little stones on the side. I liked like one little stone on each side and then diamonds in the actual band. (don't know what it's called...channel?)

I also like something like this:

http://www.bluenile.com/design.jsp?filter_id=1&set_shape=PR

opinions?

.70 carats
very good cut
E-color
SI2- clarity
for $2,204.

Is that good???

Could I see pictures of some of your rings?? I'm so lost with this. I would rather just get married tomorrow :)

That link actually doesn't pop up. It takes you to the blue nile homepage. But that does seem like a good price (I think).

If you don't like diamonds, there are many girls that have rings with other stones. You can shop around at any jewelry store for that.

We went to tri-county yesterday, and the people looked at me like I was crazy when I said I didn't want diamonds. What they showed me wasn't good.

I don't know where to go. I don't really wear any jewelry; it's just not my thing. I think stuff is pretty and nice on other people, but I just never wear it!

I agree. I couldn't find anything I really loved in a store (plus we wanted to make sure we were getting the best quality for the best money) so we went to a friend's family jeweler and he custom made my ring for me. We picked the diamond, setting, everything. You should try that. I couldn't be happier with mine and you can do the same but get a different stone rather than a diamond.

Well let's see.....0.70 carats is a little less than a carat, so it's a nice size. Is that total weight or just the center stone?

E-color is wonderful if you're looking for a colorless diamond....it's near perfectly colorless. Mine is an H.

SI2- clarity - this is actually what mine is too (however, mine is a family heirloom and is bound to have flaws).
SI2 means Slightly Included / flawed (two grades). Minute inclusions / flaws / belmishes are more easily detected under 10x magnification.

Here's a pic of my ring...which I love by the way. It's a marquis cut (so not princess) but it is a three-stone (marquis center stone with a baguette on either side, which are each G color and VS1clarity).

STAY AWAY from tri county. i was disgusted there!!!

fh bought my diamond from a private guy that was referred to us by family.. he didnt get a good deal on it. but we went to him cuz we trusted him and he had great stones.

the setting we got form the diamond district. they are sooooooooooooooo wonderful! i would trust them. if u want their info fm me

Thanks! See those are the things I have no clue about it (and neither does my bf). From what I have read, clarity is the least important. Is si1 ok?

I would just be careful with the diamond district because if you don't know exactly what you're looking for and what to look for, a lot them of are very quick to rip you off.

from bluenile these C's come out for about $1,500-$1,900. my biggest concern with these would be the clarity. an SI2 you can see imperfections just by looking at your ring with your eye.

this is my ring:
i don't have the details of it at work with me. if you would like more info on it i can FM you tonight.

he went to a jewler in the diamon district that he had gotten a few recommendations for

there are sooooo many there though you have a ton of selection

You say you do not like the diamond industry --

They have man-made diamonds (not CZs), same chemical components as diamonds. I do not know too much information on this, but that might be the way to go.

I also agree with getting your ring custom made. FH did this with mine too and i couldn't be happer!

Re: engagement ring HELP!

its all personal pref. some ppl want huge rocks but their diamonds are black or yellow
some ppl preffer a smaller stone but excellent clarity and color.

fh and i were clueless..but once u start shopping around, u will be come a pro.

Re: engagement ring HELP!

ah rak, are u talking about the laserd diamonds?

not sure thats the best route.

also, when u go shopping they will ask u ur budget. tell them HALF of ur budget.

fh gave them his budget and forget it.... he went over his by 3times. i dont knwo why hes still with me

but yea. def dont tell them how much u wanan spend.. start out by 50% of what he has..and see what they have..then work your way up..

Beautiful! If you don't mind me asking, how many carats is that? the 0.70 is just the center stone. I think it was like 0.98 together.

I'm trying to educate myself with all these terms now because it's going to VERY easy to rip us off!

This is what I have got so far (let me know if i'm wrong!):

the cut is the most important. You don't want to sacrifice here. Color is the second most important. D is the best. e-f and g-h are near-colorless so they are still good. i-j are decent too.

Clarity is the least important. I'm not sure with this one. Should I try to find something that is vs1?

Thanks EVERYONE for the help!
